'We Escorted Him Home’: Police Deny Arresting Fired Kenya Prisons Boss Wycliffe Ogalo

The National Police Service (NPS) has now dismissed reports pointing towards the arrest former Commissioner-General of the Kenya Prisons Service Wycliffe Ogalo following his sacking on Wednesday.

NPS, in a statement, said the officers who were seen on video seemingly accosting Mr. Ogalo at Magereza House and directing him to a waiting police vehicle were only escorting him home.

Their presence at the premises, the statement alleged, was only to oversee a smooth transfer of office from Ogalo to his successor.

“The reporting appearing in mainstream and social media that the former Kenya Prisons Service’s Commissioner General Mr. Wycliffe Ogallo has been arrested by police is not accurate as stated,” stated NPS.

“This is to clarify that police only facilitated a smooth and seamless handover of office and escorted the former Commissioner General to his home.”

President Uhuru Kenyatta had earlier on fired Ogalo as the Kenya Prisons boss following a breach in security at the Kamiti Maximum Prison which led to the escape of three terror convicts.

President Kenyatta then appointed and immediately witnessed the swearing-in of Ogalo’s successor, Brigadier (Rtd) John Kibaso Warioba.

The Head of State also directed Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i to spare no resource in pursuing and capturing the Kamiti escapees.

He urged all State investigative agencies to bring every person found to have been involved in the prison break to full account.

PRESS STATEMENT ON REVIEW AND UPDATE OF THE SUGAR CANE PRICES IN THE COUNTRY

PERFORMANCE OF THE SUGAR INDUSTRY.

The Sugar Industry has witnessed a steady increase in sugar production due to enhanced investments by both the Government and private sector players. Cumulatively, sugar production in January – October 2021 was 577,807 tonnes compared to 514,727 tonnes produced in the same period last year, indicating a 12% increase. Sugar production increase is due to improved availability of sugar cane in all sugar growing areas attributed to favourable weather conditions and improved cane prices. The projected sugar production in 2021 is estimated at over 660,000 metric tonnes.

The Crops (Sugar) (General) Regulations, 2020 specifies the various requirements for contracts/agreements between cane growers and millers, handling, and supply of sugarcane. The regulations provide for a Sugarcane Pricing Committee responsible for developing the cane pricing formula and reviewing cane prices. The payment for cane on the basis of set prices shall be done weekly.

The sugarcane price calculated using the simplified formula is largely dependent on the sugar prices as all the other parameters are fixed over a longer timeframe.

Having considered the prevailing ex-factory sugar prices over the past three months (August – October 2021) and the current upward trend in the price of sugar, the committee resolved to base the cane price on the average ex-factory sugar price of Kshs.4,770.00 per 50kg bag for October 2021. The Committee, therefore, approved an increase in the price of cane from the current Ksh.3,833.00 per tonne to Ksh.4,112.00 per tonne, effective November 18th, 2021.

I directs the millers to adhere to the new prices while making payments to the farmers. Any farmer being paid less should report to the Agriculture and Food Authority for redress.

The reporting appearing in mainstream and social media that the former Kenya Prisons Service’s Commissioner General Mr. Wycliffe Ogallo has been arrested by police is not accurate as stated. This is to clarify that police only facilitated a smooth and seamless handover of office and escorted the former Commissioner General to his home.

Meru Professionals Demand an Apology from Dp Ruto After Attacks on Kiraitu, Munya

The backlash against William Ruto’s unprovoked attacks on Mt Kenya leaders opposed to his presidential bid has continued, with the Meru Young Professionals forum demanding an apology from the deputy president.

Ruto has been widely criticized this week in the wake of personalised public attacks on governors James Nyoro and Kiraitu Murungi as well as other leaders perceived to support his opponent, ODM leader Raila Odinga.

The Meru professionals particularly took issue with Ruto’s jibe directed at Kiraitu and Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya during a rally in Meru on Monday, November 15, warning that the Deputy President had crossed the line.

“We’ve noticed a trend where you roam Mt Kenya insulting leaders and elders, including His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta. We as the Meru people are completely different from our Agikuyu brothers, we can’t tolerate a situation where our leaders are abused, let alone in front of women and children,” stated Francis Gitobu, the forum’s chairman.

Gitobu asked all Meru people to stand together and protect their traditions adding that the people of Meru will not allow handouts to be used as a gateway to insults.

“We are very welcoming but there is a way our visitors must conduct themselves. You should know that you’ve crossed the line on this one. We should not let someone’s 2022 ambitions undermine our culture,” he stated.

He highlighted that Kiraitu and Munya are not only regional kingpins but also Njuri Ncheke Demeaning Meru leaders.

On Tuesday, November 16, vocal politician Mike Makarina also demanded an apology from Ruto, terming the remarks against governor Kiraitu as reckless. He reminded him that Kiraitu was a respected kingpin who would greatly influence which presidential candidate the Meru community will vote for come 2022.

While Makarina advised the DP to learn how to respect all leaders irrespective of their positions, he said it was ironic that Ruto has been demeaning Meru leaders such as Kiraitu, Munya, Florence Kajuju and others yet he wanted their support.
