PRODUCTION INSIGHT: 'PERSONA'

As part of our Hilary Term 2022 series, we are focusing on the live, on the ground productions being created in Oxford right now to bring you personalised insights into the play making process here at Oxford University.

In this episode, Gillian talks to the director Lucas Quinn, producer Rachel Dastgir and actor Agnes Halladay, of the upcoming play Persona at the Burton Taylor Studio. An adaptation of Ingmar Bergman's 1966 film of the same name, Persona deals with surprisingly modern themes of how identity is formed in our society. Listen to the evocative voice of Lucas Quinn, the directorial force behind this dark play, explain why he chose to adapt this film for the stage, and his insights into the effect the production wants to have on its audience.

You can follow what is happening with the team behind Persona at .productions on Instagram.

The show is on next week at the Burton Taylor Studio (22nd-26th Feb, 7:30pm). Saturday has already sold out, so grab your tickets now!

EPISODE 15: NEW AUDIO DRAMA - 'It Was Really Nothing'

'It Was Really Nothing' is an audio drama written by Anna Stephen, performed by Poddy Wilson, and produced by Ciana Russo.

It's a ten-minute monologue spoken by a female teacher in the heat and dust of California, 1979, who must keep her wayward student back after class to talk to him about his habit of writing in the margins of his school books. It's an intense, curious exploration of attraction despite age difference.

***OPPORTUNITY FOR PRODUCTION COMPANIES***

Play On: The OUDS Podcast is excited to reboot this term with a new focus on making OUDS as accessible as possible. We would like to centre our episodes around advice on getting involved in OUDS, opportunities on offer and inspiring students in drama.

Sign up for the chance to be on Play On: The OUDS podcast!
We will assign you to a specific topic area e.g. acting, directing etc and will either interview you or offer prompts/questions for you to discuss between each other. We ask that 1/2 representatives make themselves available for a 15-20 minute recording in Oxford (if you are uncomfortable with in person recordings there will be online options so please do not worry). This is a great opportunity to market your production company and any upcoming productions, including opportunities for students. We will assign production companies on a first come first served basis and will get started ASAP as the episodes will be released this term.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with [email protected].

MEET THE CAST

Mirabelle will be playing Tolu in 'The Spelling Mistake'.

My name is Mirabelle Otuoze and I am a second year Liberal Arts student from Durham University. While I have recorded a podcast before, recording an audiodrama is a whole new world for me and is unlike any acting I have done before. The process, as well as the themes of the script encouraged me to think in ways I had not previously considered and gave insight into the world of acting without the visuals. It was a pleasure to be a part of this, especially with Sekela and Grace!
This is an important piece, not just for the listener but for us as cast members too. It was really interesting to see racism and slurs being discussed and addressed in an intimate setting with no clear indication of what these characters intended to do about the situation, and more importantly, whether they planned to take action at all. This piece of writing has the comedic element while still addressing important themes, and it made me feel safe; the severity is acknowledged and understood, but also gave a sense of autonomy in the way that the two sisters responded so differently. Neither way is right or wrong, and it's okay to pick your battles. Sheila has done an excellent job, and I will always be fond of her work and proud of everyone involved!

MEET THE DIRECTOR!

I’m Grace, and I directed ‘The Spelling Mistake’. It’s been awesome to guide the process of bringing Sheila’s awesome writing to life, and getting to know these wonderful actors.
This is my first time directing, and it’s been interesting to think about how I’m developing a sort of directorial style. I like to let the actors follow their nose as much as possible, as I think it’s a way of bringing out a more authentic performance. I’m so excited for people to listen to this short piece, as I think it’s really open to interpretation, which is always exciting; we hope to have explored these issues with depth and nuance, but I suppose we’ll see how it comes across!

MEET THE WRITER

INTRODUCING SHEILA ATUONA!

Sheila is the writer of 'Why' and 'The Spelling Mistake'.

My name is Sheila Atuona, and I am in year 1 of a master’s in Creative Writing. My love for storytelling goes back to when my parents would tell me ta the tales of their childhood, and I started to write my own. With time, I have learned that storytelling is an excellent lenitive for the mind and witnessed its transformative powers; I am fortunate to be attending a course that pushes me out of my comfort zone (fiction) and encourages me to experiment with other genres. I am new to writing for performance, so I am elated that these two pieces were selected for the OUDS podcast. 'Why' is my first monologue and it was a challenge to write from a child's point of view, so I had to find a point in common - the sense of not having all the answers; something that adults and children alike experience. 'The Spelling Mistake' was a response to a class task where we discussed 'voice' as a literary device. I had to write a conversation based on a lived experience and wanted to use a comedic slant to highlight the inane reasoning behind racism.

INTRODUCING SEKELA NGAMILO!

Sekela is playing Ade in 'The Spelling Mistake'.

Hi, I’m Sekela, a Law student at Oxford. This is my first time doing a radio play and it was great to think about the different ways in which we could use our voices and sound to create a captivating and educational piece of art.
This piece of writing is important because it portrays the kinds of conversations people might have when they have been called a racial slur and the powerlessness they may feel as a result. It also uses comedy to highlight this powerlessness and shows the difference in reaction that each person has in response to racism.

MEET THE NEW WRITING PRODUCER!

Hi, I'm Erin, a 1st year Physicist at Queen's. This is my first time producing and it's been such a wonderful experience! I've loved following the pieces from beginning to end, meeting with Sheila, our writer, to discuss her visions and then working with Grace and Jess as they cast and rehearsed the plays, and then finally bringing everything together to market these amazing radio productions which have been created by such talented people. Both 'The Spelling Mistake' and 'Why' tell very familiar stories from a unique point of view, highlighting the comdeic side of events where different writers could choose to take a more serious approach. This has made it so much fun to hear the actors develop these characters over the last few weeks, finding the nuances in the scripts which I hadn't seen when reading through.

In our third episode we will also be hearing about Jamie Murphy's experience adapting Greek theatre.

Jamie is a third year undergraduate reading English at The Queen’s College. He wrote and directed Shadows of Troy (Oxford Playhouse, HT20) and The Music’s Stopped, winner of Best Show and Best New Writing in the Oxford University Drama Society’s Cuppers Competition (Burton Taylor Studio, MT18). He also directed Every Brilliant Thing (Pilch, TT19) and Life of Galileo (Keble O’Reilly, MT19). As a writer, his play Leap Of was shortlisted as part of the National Theatre’s ‘New Views’ competition, receiving a rehearsed reading at the National as a result. The play was performed again in Hilary Term 2019 (Burton Taylor Studio), having been shortlisted in The Oxford University New Writing Festival. His play Bear was performed at Katzspace in London in March 2019, and he led a project to create a new translation of Brecht’s Life of Galileo, which was also performed in 2019. As an actor, he trained full time at Sylvia Young Theatre School, and with the National Youth Theatre. Also in Episode Two is an interesting interview with George Rushton, hosted by Kirsty Miles.

George is a third year in English and French at Magdalen, currently on his year abroad.

He started writing and directing in his second year, and has had three pieces on the Oxford stage, with themes ranging from superheroes to time travel to amnesia, but always looking to tie character to concept.

The productions have spanned Covid, the first closing just before the March lockdown, the second filmed in November, and the last completely remote. While he’s relished the challenge of these constraints, George looks forward to the prospect of moving his plays across venues, hoping to take one to the Edinburgh Fringe next year.

This episode will be released on Saturday 22nd May at 2pm.

Introducing... Hannah Gallardo-Parsons!
Pronouns: they/she

Why did you want to be involved in the OUDS podcast?

To learn about Oxford's theatre scene and what local artists are creating! I'm a sound designer with a background as a theatre stage manager/technician and wanted to keep up with new theatre works as much as I can.

Fave podcast?

Too many! The Truth, Old Tunes Fresh Takes, The Heart, Song Exploder, The Allusionist, Passenger List (to name a few!)

Biggest guilty pleasure?

Eating an entire block of banana Soreen by myself in one go (and hiding the evidence from my housemates).

Hannah was most recently commissioned by BBC New Creatives for their interactive audio piece Hairy Hands FM, as well as working as a tech on Tramp's OnComm-winning The Poltergeist at Southwark Playhouse.
