6 months of RV living as a family of four ๐คฏ
At times, it has been challenging. But overall, we've been super happy to get back to RVing.
Megan and I lived in our renovated motorhome when we first started out as travel PTs and loved it!
So we always knew we'd like to get back to that once we started our family.
Well, 2 little girls later, and we're doing it and having a blast!

People will have doubts about you traveling - that's okay
Unfortunately, not everyone around you will be as excited about your travel therapy career as you are. You'll have people with doubts about travel and even doubts about you. We've had family members, friends, professors, colleagues, clinic owners, etc all comment doubtfully about our choice to pursue travel. But "haters" are not all the same.
In our most recent podcast, Megan and I explain how we categorize the doubters and haters in our lives into 3 distinct boxes. This includes:
Questioners of Logistics - Most family members will fall into this group. They'll be supportive of your travel decision but have legitimate questions on the logistics of travel, like health insurance, housing, taxes, etc. Find out the answers to these questions, present them to your family, and watch their doubts turn into support.

Fearful Folk - Fellow therapists you work with/were on clinical with, classmates, and professors usually align with the fearful folk category. These are people who have the option to choose the travel lifestyle just like you're doing, but when they picture themselves in your shoes, they start recognizing personal fears with the idea of travel and project those onto you in the form of doubts and proclamations about traveling. This is when you hear many of the myths about travel therapy, which you can watch a video on at the bottom of this email. These myths can include:
travelers get all the "bad patients"
you need 1 year of experience before you travel
there's no mentorship or professional development as a traveler
travelers are all mediocre therapists
plus many more

Haters - Simply put, these haters will never travel and they want to prevent you from traveling. Maybe they're unhappy with their current situation or regret not having the confidence to take the leap of faith into traveling, but what they say to you can be swept away never to be heard or read again. Usually, their words will be hateful and sharp. In dark contrast to the 2 above groups who mean no malicious intent, but are rather fearful and need some education on travel therapy.

Is 2024 your year to travel?
Every year, Megan and I discuss what goals we'd like to accomplish and possible travel destinations.
As travel therapists, we have a unique opportunity to live in multiple places during the year and explore the country. Sometimes this can feel overwhelming, and you don't know where to start. We have found that this year has been particularly difficult to plan because our family is growing and we're trying to navigate traveling in our home state or adventuring out to the beautiful areas of the country we know, love, and want to explore.
We have stressed about the many decisions that have to be made as a travel therapist and forgot that the flexibility (and yes uncertainty of travel) is a positive. Not a negative.
As travelers, we get to try traveling in our home state with our young family and then venture out as we feel comfortable. And if we're too far away or have a "bad" experience, then we can make a pivot! How many careers can you truly have the flexibility to "try new things" or let it change as you change as a traveler?
Early on in Megan and I's travel career we traveled hard and fast. We went to the best locations we could find 2 PT jobs at and visited all kinds of national parks, cities, and roadside oddities. We traveled every weekend and packed it full.
Now with 2 children under the age of 2, our travel style looks nothing like that. We honestly wouldn't survive as a family going that hard! But when travel therapy is your career, you get to decide how you want to utilize it for your own good. That's truly unique!
So if 2024 is the year for you to travel, we say go for it! You won't have everything figured out. You'll make plans, but we can promise you that they'll be disrupted. That's part of the travel lifestyle! But you will be able to make adjustments along the way! Find your travel style. Find how a travel career can serve you.
It's definitely served us well.

We have officially moved into our RV! ๐๐๐บ
Ryan just started a new travel assignment not far from home. This is the perfect situation for us to "test out" life on the road as a family of four in an RV. ๐
So far, it has gone well! Everyone is adjusting to the RV lifestyle, and we've been able to organize the small space to our liking. ๐

I did NOT want to travel ๐ณ . When we first started considering traveling as new grad physical therapists, I did not want to leave my family. ๐ข . But learning about all the benefits of travel convinced me that I had to at least try 1 travel assignment. ๐ช๐ป . Now we've been traveling since 2020 and get to bring our little girls along with us! Yes, we live a more hybrid lifestyle, but we're getting the benefits of both life with family at home and traveling! We love how we can shape travel into what we need during this time of life! ๐ฅฐ .
