This is Roberto.
He is my ukulele and he’s been along for the ride since 2015. I distinctly remember the day I bought him. I was working at Camp Mintahama and it was our first pay day. I was the Program Director that year and I finally had enough spending money to purchase this instrument.
I went to the closest music store and bought him. I didn’t buy a cheap one, I knew it was going to need to be sturdy to last all summer long. I went ahead and purchased another set of strings (I still haven’t had to replace them yet 😂) but I wasn’t going to buy a tuner. I was going into my (first) senior year of college studying music…I was convinced I’d be able to tune it by ear at camp.
The gentleman tried to convince me to buy a tuner. He talked about how it would constantly need tuning being outside but I didn’t want to spend anymore money. I told him I worked for the Girl Scouts, and while he was ringing up my purchase, he pulled out his wallet and bought me the tuner. “It’s the least I can do for such a great organization”, he said, and I’ve never played him without a tuner since.
I’ve used this ukulele every summer since. I’m in my 5th year of teaching and he still accompanies me almost every day in my lessons. He’s given me more blisters and calluses I can count…but the joy he’s brought me and others is well beyond any pain I can feel. Because of him, I’ve been inspired to write songs and learn how to play ones for campfires and lesson plans. Without you, I wouldn’t be the musician I am today.
I bring him home now because I have a calling on my heart to start recording some camp songs. I hope you enjoy this one, the shortest and the very first camp song I ever wrote. Which camp song should I record next???
