Katewordsmith Right place. Right time. Right message. Her passions include her dog and her husband (in that order), a sultry Sazerac and judging people who use Oxford commas.

Content Design | Branding | Copywriting

Kate Smith was born and raised in a half dozen military bases around the United States before spending her formative years in the Twin Cities. She graduated with honors from a quaint liberal arts college in Iowa, an experience that left her with an incredible knack for composing quasi-literature that accommodates her generation's rapidly decreasing literacy

. Still ever the optimist, Kate has written for METRO Magazine, Minnesota Bride, Twin Cities Business and Midwest Home while moonlighting as a copywriting pen-for-hire. Interested in connecting on a project? No job is too big, no fee is too big. Let's connect.

In a perfect world, this little list would have included all my favorite articles from 2014. It would have had detailed information on each one; why it was selected, how long it takes to read, related links and maybe even an author bio. In a perfect ... Read More

Belated congratulations to Tiffany Kokal on the launch of her new website! This was a really fun copy project for a truly awesome Twin Cities photographer — she gives a portion of her profits to local families and causes. How cool is that?

“We wanted to build a brand that stood for fun, creativity and doing good in the world, and we thought writers best represented that,” said Warby Parker co-founder and co-chief executive, Neil Blumenthal.

Indeed we do, Mr. Blumenthal. Indeed we do.

A number of companies are latching on to famous writers like Jonathan Safran Foer, who persuaded Chipotle to start an author series on bags and cups.

For everybody who's camped out with family this weekend: here's a round up of interesting articles to keep you occupied. That being said, don't forget to look up every now and again to appreciate the great human beings surrounding you over the holidays (and beyond). Okay?

The time that’s great for catching up on reading, though? When dishes are stacked. Dessert has been served. Kids are in bed. Guests start sinking into couches and the sound of football commentary streams through the house.

The new MaeMae & Co. website launched this week, and I’m extremely proud to have contributed copy and content strategy for the project. A lot of love, hard work and elbow grease went into those fun, vibrant and colorful pages and — wouldn’t you know it — they turned out beautifully.

Congratulations to Megan and her awesome studio team!

Today marks the beginning of a new content strategy project for a company that is challenging the way we preserve memories with film. It's beautiful and thoughtful and challenging and I can't wait to show you what we come up with.

I wrote this little post on enjoying Labor Day weekend for Wit & Delight, but I think it's still applicable as we return to the daily grind and roll toward winter.

By Kate Smith: I must have sat for three hours with my laptop open, trying to figure out a way to introduce this column, this idea. Simply put, I want to share a handful of curated links to give all of us a break from the continuous stream of celebrity click bait and sartorial how-tos. That is not t…

"A focus on becoming great at your craft eventually adds value to the lives of others. Adding value to the lives of others is how you turn a passion for your craft into a longterm career.

A focus on becoming famous includes telling a story that's incomplete. It includes only wins, and possibly some smoke and mirrors to enhance the wins. You will fuel the "keeping up with the Joneses" mentality, which is destructive to your community."

Would you rather be good, or famous? Take your pick. http://bit.ly/1pQodoc

There’s little doubt that “do what you love” (DWYL) is now the unofficial work mantra for our time. The problem is that it leads not to salvation, but to the devaluation of actual work, including the very work it pretends to elevate. http://bit.ly/RIet3d

I don't have New Year's resolutions per se, but these days it feels like the recurring theme around the Smith household is simplicity. Which is why I love the idea behind MIJLO's "essentials" project, featuring a collection of essential items as curated by global creatives. The one caveat: their style had to be as timeless as the bag they packed it in.

Esquire's 70 Greatest Sentences

When a writer does well, the rest of the country is doing fine. — John Steinbeck, "A Primer on the 30's." Such a good article in Esquire this month on the 70 Greatest Sentences ever printed in their magazine. http://bit.ly/18mWjJ8

Seventy lines that sparkle, invoke, provoke, or are just damn enjoyable to read.
