Running a detailing business and looking for more customers? Social media should be your best friend.

There’s some misconceptions about using social media for marketing, so we want to help you sort through the bad info and get to what’s going to make a difference in your business.

First things first. Understand that posting to social media in itself, is not marketing. It’s good to build an audience and keep them up to date, and can lead to bookings, but it won’t be nearly as powerful as building carefully targeting campaigns toward the audience you want to serve.

Here’s some more detail on each of the points in the second slide.

1. If you don’t know where to start when it comes to your ads creative content, working with a post you have that’s already done well can be a good place to start.

2. Figuring out what you’re able to pay for a customer and still remain profitable is one of the most important steps you can take on the path to successfully marketing your business. Consider some of the following : What is the average value of a customer to your business? What are your profit margins? How many times do they come back? So on and so forth. This should help you figure out a reasonable ad budget that will help you scale profitably.

3. Never, under any circumstances should you use the “Boost Post” button on Facebook or Instagram. It is a surface level ad machine that’s really designed to take your money. Use the actual ads manager in your Facebook business account and put the real marketing machine to work.

4. Figure out what area you want new customers from. Are you a mobile retailer?We recommend working a certain region or zip code and building a reputation there before expanding out too much. The world is your oyster on this one. Brick and mortar with a fixed location? Start with the area around your shop, or focus on neighborhoods that might have a concentration of your ideal customer.

5. Before running your ad, it’s best to come up with an offer. Some sort of special deal to help incentivize new customers even further can go a long way.

If you use all these points correctly you WILL get new customers.

Many small businesses are overlooking this simple yet powerful tool. If you’re in the auto repair or sales business, you could be missing huge amounts of return and referral business!

We all know the power of reminders. You may put them on your phone, or on a sticky note that ends up on your fridge, and if you’re like us, maybe you just write them on your palm😂🖐🏽✍🏽

My point is... If you’re not using email to keep in touch with your customers, you’re not reminding them!

Remind them you’re there to help!

Special offers, discounts, or general updates about your business (as long as they’re interesting from your customers perspective) are all great ways of staying top of mind and reminding your customers about your business!

By staying top of mind, you’re more likely to be brought up in conversation and receive referral business, as well as more frequent return customers.

One of the most common questions we get from auto repair owners is: 'What's the best way to get more referrals - WITHOUT spending more money on marketing?'

So, we compiled a list! Here are the top-5 non paid marketing strategies for auto repair shops to increase word-of-mouth referrals.

1. Email newsletters - Believe it or not, email is still a highly effective way of staying in touch with your customers. Now, nobody wants spam in their inbox. However, if you're providing valuable info about your shop or promoting discounts, coupons, or other special offers - Your return business will likely increase! And in turn, you're giving yourself more opportunities to wow your customers and get referral business from them!

2. Thank them for their business! - This is easy to overlook, and goes a long way with your customers when it's not overlooked! We've seen time and again, shops that appreciate their customers and provide them with a memorable customer experience are more likely to receive referral business. A simple thank you could result in years of new business!

3. Be active on social media. - Everyone knows the power of social media when it comes to staying in front of your customers. By staying top of mind, you increase your chances of being brought up in casual conversation between your customer and that would-be referral! Make sure your content is interesting and helpful from your customers' perspective.

4. Get reviews! - The key here is to ask. Most businesses simply don't ask for reviews, therefore they don't get many! If you're providing your customers with a great service and experience, then theres no reason they wouldn't happily leave you a review, don't be afraid to tell them it will help you out! When prospective customers are searching for a place to have their car serviced next, they're most likely to go with whoever is local with the highest number of reviews. Good and bad! Even a neutral review will help you more than no reviews at all. If they see a friend or acquaintance of theirs has checked in at your business, bingo.

5. Ask for referrals! - Lastly, we think the final key to getting more referral business to your shop is largely the same as getting more reviews in step 4. Just ask! If you're coming through on the promises you make to your customers, they will not only refer you business, they'll be happy too! You've given them a great experience, saved them money, and helped them stay on the road - Why wouldn't they want the same for their friends and family?

There you have it! These are what we have seen to be the top non-paid strategies to receiving more referral business for your auto repair shop. They're not necessarily listed in order, nor is it a complete list. However, they are all free, can be easily incorporated into your standard marketing practices, and have proven to be effective!

Our Story

The journey that led to the creation of Media Lion Marketing Group began in late 2017. Media Lion’s founders, Riley Miller and Noah Willeke had spent the large part of the year getting an e-commerce store off the ground; selling various products through the aid of Amazon, Facebook and Instagram. All through 2018 and into 2019 they worked to scale their product line and grow the business, only to find that e-commerce had a particularly inhuman side. There was no human connection with any of their customers or suppliers, and while they were making progress in learning the ins and outs of marketing and selling a product online, e-commerce failed to meet a hugely important factor of business to them; human interaction.

Late in 2018, during one of the late night think tanks our founders regularly partake in, the lightbulb light up. Then exploded. Why not take everything they’ve learned about selling and marketing online, and use it to help real businesses, and real people? They saw a tremendous opportunity to implement the mastery they’d achieved online in a way that made a real difference, in the real world. Immediately they got to work on determining who they could help, coming to the inevitable conclusion that local service businesses had the greatest need for the skill they had developed.

They noticed a huge need that many small businesses seemed to be missing; even relatively large companies had little to no presence online. With so many people using social media on a regular basis, they wanted to offer business owners a system that enabled them to focus on growing their business without having to take time out of their busy schedule to worry about expanding their brand online. The model was simple; free up the time of our clients to enable them to close and complete the work our marketing system provides their business.

Some years, and a lot of hard work later Media Lion is a fully operational digital marketing agency serving multiple businesses across both the U.S. and Canada.
