A STUDENT OF POLYTECHNIC COMMIT SU***DE AFTER LOSING HIS SCHOOL FEES TO AN ONLINE BETTING.

A student of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State, Samuel Adegoke, has reportedly killed himself by drinking a substance suspected to be an insecticide after allegedly losing his school fees and that of his friend to an online betting.

Adegoke, who was a National Diploma II student of Electrical Electronic Engineering, reportedly killed himself on Monday when his colleagues were preparing for the first-semester examination.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the deceased used his school fee for online betting on Friday and lost.

He allegedly also deceived his roommate to get his password, access his bank’s mobile app and used the money meant for his (roommate’s) school fees to play and also lost.

The school’s Deputy Registrar, Public Relations, Sola Abiala, confirmed the development to PUNCH Metro on the telephone on Wednesday.

Abiala said, “The Rector said he was called from the school clinic that one of the students was sick. Adegoke Samuel, ND 2 Electrical Electronic Engineering, was later referred to a specialist hospital. When they got there, they got the information that he used his school fees to bet and lost. He also used his roommate’s school fees to bet and also lost.

“We have a policy here that any student that does not pay school fees will not sit for examination. He realised that he and his friend would not sit for the examination, and that was why he committed su***de.

We sent for his parents and briefed them. His father told us that his late son did the same thing last session and he had to send money to him to pay the fees. He said if he had known about the latest one, he would have paid for it.”

Abiala added that when asked to take possession of the co**se, the father rejected it and said he could not take his son’s co**se back home, asking the school authorities to bury him.

The polytechnic Student s’ Union President, Thanni Abdullahi, also confirmed the incident to one of our correspondents on Wednesday.

Abdullahi regretted that efforts made to save the deceased did not yield results
He said, “What happened was that on Monday, the deceased and his friends, one of whom is his roommate, were returning from night class when the dad of one of the friends sent him his school fees. So, the friend showed the deceased the alert on his phone.

“The friend told the deceased to call his dad too for his school fee. So, the deceased collected the friend’s phone, claiming he wanted to check something.

“After collecting the phone, he accessed the friend’s bank account, and he transferred the money meant for the guy’s school fee.”

Abdullahi said the roommate discovered the money was missing when he got to the point where he would pay his fee.

He added, “On getting to where he would pay the school fee, the friend realised that the money was no longer in his bank account. So, he called the deceased who opened up to his friend that he used the money for betting.

“He promised the friend that he would raise money before the end of the day and pay back.

“On getting home, while the deceased was inside, the friends were outside. When they went inside about 30 minutes later, they found out that he had consumed an insecticide.”

HOW ISLAMIC CLERIC DEFILE SIX-YEARS OLD FEMALE PUPIL.

A 24-year-old Islamic teacher, Mosediq Toheeb, was on Wednesday remanded by a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court for sexually assaulting a six-year-old pupil at a Quranic school.

The court presided over by Magistrate Patrick Nwaka, remanded the defendant who was arraigned on two counts of sexual violation preferred against him by the state police command.

The police prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, told the court that the incident happened on May 7, 2023, at the University of Lagos Central Mosque.

According to Nurudeen, that was the second time that the teacher would defile the child.

The victim’s mother told the court that on the day of the incident, the child returned home from school with blood stains on her clothes and when asked what happened, she told her that her class teacher took her to a separate classroom, tied her mouth and hands and defiled her with a stern warning that she should not tell anybody.

According to the prosecutor, the offences committed are punishable under Sections 261 and 137 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.

The charge read in part, “That you, Mosediq Toheeb, on May 7, 2023, around 4pm at UNILAG Central Mosque, in the Yaba Magisterial District, did sexually assault one six-year-old female (name withheld), who lives at No. 26, Femi Adebule Street, Fola Agoro, in the Somolu area of Lagos, by inserting your finger into her va**na and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 261 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.”

Nurudeen prayed the court to remand the defendant for 30 days pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution.

Toheeb’s lawyer, Patrick Onochie, pleaded with the court to consider the defendant, who he claimed was a final year student of the University of Lagos and would be starting his final examinations in two weeks.

Magistrate Nwaka did not take the plea of the defendant but ordered that he should be remanded.

He said there was no document before the court to show that the defendant was a student and in his final year or about to begin an examination.

He ordered that the case file be duplicated and sent to the Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice and copies of his school documents attached to the case file.

He adjourned the case till June 19, 2023.

LET KILLS TRIBALISM BEFORE IT KILLS NIGERIA.

Tribalism, nepotism, and favouritism are some of the most significant challenges that Nigeria has faced in its quest for development. These practices have plagued the country's political, economic, and social spheres for decades and continue to hinder its progress.

Tribalism, which is the practice of placing one's ethnic group above others, has been a major obstacle to national unity and cohesion. This has resulted in a lack of trust among various ethnic groups and has led to conflicts and tensions. In Nigeria, tribalism has influenced many aspects of life, including politics, where people tend to vote along ethnic lines, regardless of the candidate's qualifications.

Nepotism, which is the practice of favouring family members and friends for positions of power and influence, has also been a significant problem in Nigeria. This practice has led to the appointment of unqualified individuals to key positions, which has resulted in poor service delivery and a lack of accountability. Nepotism has also led to a concentration of power in the hands of a few families, thereby limiting opportunities for others.

Favouritism, which is the practice of showing preference to individuals or groups based on personal connections or affiliations, has also been a major issue in Nigeria. This has led to a culture of patronage, where individuals who have connections or are in the good graces of those in power receive preferential treatment, even if they are not the most qualified for a particular position or opportunity.

The effects of these practices have been devastating for Nigeria. They have hindered economic progress by limiting opportunities for individuals outside the privileged class, resulting in a concentration of wealth in the hands of a few. This has also led to a lack of trust in government institutions and a sense of hopelessness among the general population.

In conclusion, Nigeria cannot achieve its full potential as a nation unless it addresses the issues of tribalism, nepotism, and favouritism. The government needs to prioritize meritocracy in appointments and create a level playing field for all citizens to compete for opportunities. This will help to build trust and confidence in government institutions and promote national unity and cohesion.

Aisha Buhari, Nigeria’s First Lady spoke from London on Thursday and declared that she cannot be stopped from voicing out her opinion on issues in the country because she has the constitutional right to free expression.
She was speaking as a guest caller on the popular TVC Programme, Journalists’ Hangout.
Some of the controversies she stirred with her comment on the need to regulate social media, the state of insecurity and poverty, her carpeting governors and ministers for not doing enough for the people were the issues in focus on the forum on Thursday.

Asked whether she has been told to stop talking. She retorted: “Who will stop me? Everybody is talking in the country. Everybody should talk. It is freedom of speech”, she said.
Does she engage in pillow talk with her husband, President Buhari about the state of the nation, she joked: “There is no pillow in the Villa”, including the “other room”.

She clarified that she did not specifically blame the governors when she spoke last week at the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs General Assembly and National Executive Council Meeting held at the National Mosque in Abuja, because she is aware the problems the country is going through have piled up as a result of total long-term neglect.

“We are all suffering from it. Whether you are an executive or ordinary citizen. We can’t go to our villages and sleep with two eyes closed. It cuts across”.

Convener of the movement, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, has alleged that the Department of State Service (DSS) has threatened to kill him after his release on Thursday night.

Mr. Sowore and his co-defendant, Olawale Bakare, were released when Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court in Abuja, gave an order at the scheduled commencement of the defendants’ trial on charges of treasonable felony.

The drama in court today started when operatives of DSS tried to rearrest Mr. Sowore and Mr. Bakare in front of Justice Ojukwu.
Mr. Sowore, in an interview with Channels TV correspondent, said that the DSS had allegedly told him that he will not walk out of their detention alive.

“It might be my only word on the record before they kill me; this is an attempt to assassinate me in court. They came with guns and they tried to shoot and they dragged me down in front of a judge after I have been granted bail.
“I said it that these are a bunch of lawless people and they were reluctant to respect the order of the court. Now they have shown it to the whole world. “They tried to break me in prison, sent delegations to me, offering all kinds of things and I refused and they promised that I will not walk out of their detention alive and that is what they have come to implement today.”

The convener urged Nigerians not to be afraid and some people have to make the sacrifice for the Country to work. “What is important for Nigerians to know is that I am not going to give up until every Nigerian benefit from a country that is theirs and I have made it very clear. “Nobody in Nigeria should be afraid, it is our country and some people have to make the sacrifice for this country to be a country of rule, law and of dignity; and this also involves even judges, if suspects who have been given bail are not safe in court, the judges themselves are not safe.”

He explained that the sudden exit of justice Ojukwu is due to the manner at which the DSS operatives had caused a scene inside the courtroom. “That is why the judge had to retire hurriedly into her chambers. “We urge you to hang around so that you can witness this historic day in Nigeria.”

Sowore, a presidential candidate in the February 2019 elections, was arrested on August 3, just days to a planned protest against “bad governance” in the country. Both he and his co-defendant are facing seven counts bordering on conspiracy to commit treasonable felony in breach of Section 516 of the Criminal Code Act, money laundering and cybercrimes, amongst others.

They pleaded not guilty to the charge and were granted bail on October 4, in the sum of N100m and N50m respectively with two sureties in like sum. They, however, were not released until yesterday.

*He won the fight but not the war*.

Epo ni mo ru, ko ni yangi ma ba t'emi je.
===
This was a story of two men.

One, called *“Elepo”* because of the nature of his merchandise, which was palm oil. The other called *“Oniyangi”* also because of the nature of his own merchandise, which was sharp sand.

One day a long, long time ago which no one living can actually define, Elepo and Oniyangi set out from opposite directions to dispose off their merchandise.

After travelling many days by foot, which was the only means of transportation in those days, they met at a narrow path, which iya agba called “ese-k’o-gb’eji”.

It was such a narrow path that only one person could go through at a time. Elepo insisted on the right of way. Oniyangi would have none of it.

Both argued until other travellers met them there and a long queue soon formed behind both men.

Still, neither Elepo nor Oniyangi would bulge.

According to my grandmother, both had a stubborn streak in them simply because when they were born, the first water used to bathe them was taken from the same river.

According to the customs then, newborn babies were also given the same water to drink. The name of the water is called “kain-kain”.

Having failed to pacify both men, some wise travellers suggested a way out – that both men should slug it out; whoever won the contest should have the right of way.

The suggestion sat pretty with both men.

Quickly, each man set down his merchandise by the roadside and they squared up one to the other.

The battle was ferocious and long; in the end, Elepo had the better of Oniyangi, lifted him off his feet and landed him on the floor.

The crowd roared!

But as Oniyangi hit the floor, one of his outstretched legs caught Elepo’s merchandise and tilted it. Immediately, the content, which was palm oil, gushed out on the bush path.

Furious, Elepo reached out for the merchandise of Oniyangi and flung it upside down on the road and its contents, which were sharp sand, poured out on the roadside.

Oniyangi got up from the floor, dusted himself up, ignored the jeers of the crowd who had started hailing Elepo for winning the bragging rights, as football fans call it these days, and began to pack his merchandise (sharp sand) into its container.

Having done that, he respected the agreement by stepping out of the narrow path for Elepo to have his right of way.

But Elepo stood transfixed on a spot.

His own merchandise had been *irretrievably wasted* and could not be salvaged as Oniyangi had salvaged his.

Were Elepo to keep throwing out Oniyangi’s merchandise, all Oniyangi would lose was the trouble he would take packing his sharp sand back into the container.

*Elepo won the contest, but his victory was pyrrhic. Whereas he won the right of way, he had no more trips to make since his wares had been wasted*.

This was the origin of the Yoruba song, “Oniyangi ma ba t’emi je, epo ni mo ru” which warns anyone carrying palm oil to beware of the man carrying sharp sand.

*In other words, if you are in a very delicate position, beware of someone who has little or nothing to lose.*

Why We Dismissed Atiku’s Petition Challenging Buhari In Its Entirety - Tribunal

The Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Abuja, on Wednesday, dismissed the petition of Atiku Abubakar challenging President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election, in its entirety,

Jbword forum reports that the five-man panel of justices led by Justice Mohammed Garba, held that the petitioners (Atiku, PDP) failed to “evidently prove” their case beyond“reasonable doubt.” “The petitioners have a duty to prove all the allegations which are criminal in nature beyond reasonable doubt,” the lead judge (Mohammed Garba) said in his ruling.

He listed some of the allegations the PDP and Atiku raised in their petition to include, ‘compromised printing of election materials’, ‘manipulation of ballot boxes’, ‘manipulation of card readers’, and ‘manipulation of accreditation and collation'. Others are, manipulation of security agencies and militarisation of election, manipulation of election materials’ delivery, arbitrary arrest of petitioners’ supporters and massive thumb-printing of ballot papers.

“Under these issues, the petitioners alleged the election was marred by irregularities, misuse of scarce resources, manipulation of result sheets, over-voting, wrongful recording of results, intimidation of voters among others in 11 ‘focal states’,”Justice Garba said.

JbWorld forum reports that the petitioners’ 11 focal states are, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, Yobe and Zamfara States.

The tribunal insisted that the allegations levelled under issues 4 and 5 (above) were criminal in nature that must be proved beyond reasonable doubt. The tribunal also said the petitioners failed to discharge the burden of proof that Buhari was not elected by a majority of lawful votes.

JbWorld Forum reports that three members of the five-man panel of justices agreed with the lead judge (Mohammed Garba) in his ruling.

The Tribunal, therefore, stroke out the entire petition of Atiku and the PDP against Buhari and the APC, for lacking merit, and failure to evidently prove their case beyond reasonable doubt.
