It was a bleak November in 2012 when Cari Farver, thirty-seven, vanished from Omaha, Nebraska.Texts sent indicated that the hardworking mother had quit her job, abandoned her son, and cut ties with everyone--including her dying father. Though Cari's boyfriend, Dave Kroupa, was hurt, he accepted the breakup-text at face value. Her mother, Nancy Raney, however, doubted that kind-hearted Cari had sent the rude texts she received. "I need to hear your voice," Nancy begged. When the texter refused to speak, Nancy reported Cari missing.

While no one saw or spoke to Cari, more than 12,000 sinister emails and texts were sent in her name over the next years. Police were skeptical of Nancy's claim that an impostor had stolen her daughter's identity, but they believed Dave and his girlfriend, Shanna "Liz" Golyar, when they reported the missing woman was cyberstalking them. The tormentor was eerily aware of Dave's every move, knew when Liz visited and threatened to "slit the fat whore's throat." It never occurred to Dave that Cari was a victim--that the real stalker had killed before, and was planning to kill again.

Human composting. This method places human remains into a steel vessel with nothing more than water, heat, mulch and preexisting microbes, accelerating natural decomposition. After about 45 days (and some turning of the vessel), the body becomes a cubic yard of nutrient-rich soil and bones.

The environmental impact is negligible, consuming about 40 gallons of water and a modest amount of electricity. Human composting is already legal in California, Washington, Oregon, Vermont and Colorado, as well as for anyone willing to ship a body to those states.

Explore Natural Organic Reduction, NOR, Human Compositing on EP #22.

On August 28, 1997, just as she was starting her junior year at the University of Kentucky, Holly Dunn and her boyfriend, Chris Maier, were walking along railroad tracks on their way home from a party when they were attacked by notorious serial killer Angel Maturino Reséndiz, aka The Railroad Killer. After her boyfriend is beaten to death in front of her, Holly is stabbed, r***d, and left for dead.

In this memoir of survival and healing from a horrific true crime, Holly recounts how she lived through the vicious assault, helped bring her assailant to justice, and ultimately found meaning and purpose through service to victims of sexual assault and other violent crimes. She has worked as a motivational speaker and activist and founded Holly's House, a safe and nurturing space in her hometown of Evansville, Indiana.

Forensic science is not just used in small-scale criminal cases but also to solve crimes against the environment. For example, if fish in a localized area are dying off or developing mutations, a forensic investigation could determine why. While there may turn out to be a natural cause, it might well be the result of illegal polluting or dumping of industrial waste.

Possibly the most famous eco-forensics case was fictionalized in the movie Erin Brockovich, in which forensic toxicologists discover that a cluster of cancer diagnoses in Hinkley, California is being caused by the Pacific Gas & Electric Company allowing wastewater containing hexavalent chromium to run off into unlined pools and contaminate the city’s groundwater.

01/05/2023

When rookie FBI agent Mark Putnam received his first assignment in 1987, it was the culmination of a lifelong dream, if not the most desirable location. Pikeville, Kentucky, is high in Appalachian coal country, an outpost rife with lawlessness dating back to the Hatfields and McCoys. As a rising star in the bureau, however, Putnam soon was cultivating paid informants and busting drug rings and bank robbers. But when one informant fell in love with him, passion and duty would collide with tragic results.

A coal miner’s daughter, Susan Smith was a young, attractive, struggling single mother. She was also a drug user sometimes described as a con artist, thief, and professional liar. Ultimately, Putnam gave in to Smith’s relentless pursuit. But when he ended the affair, she waged a campaign of vengeance that threatened to destroy him. When at last she confronted him with a shocking announcement, a violent scuffle ensued, and Putnam, in a burst of uncontrolled rage, fatally strangled her.

Though he had everything necessary to get away with murder—a spotless reputation, a victim with multiple enemies, and the protection of the bureau’s impenetrable shield—his conscience wouldn’t allow it. Tormented by a year of guilt and deception, Putnam finally led authorities to Smith’s remains. This is the story of what happened before, during, and after his startling confession—an account that “should take its place on the dark shelf of the best American true crime” (Newsday).

Cause of death isn't always obvious in murder cases. When looking at a potential strangulation victim, investigators examine their eyes for petechial hemorrhaging, or the tiny red dots that appear as a result of bleeding beneath the skin.

Petechial hemorrhaging isn't a sure sign that someone has been choked to death, but it is likely to appear when the blood vessels in someone's head have been subjected to severe pressure.

It is true that you can use hair to extract the DNA in it, but it is not actually known for everyone that the roots of the hair are capable of revealing the gender.

Why the roots? Because it is the only spot where the DNA is present, thus, it one of the best biotic measures that are used by the scientist in order to unravel the gender of the suspect, narrowing down the choices and make it easier to catch the criminal.

Autopsies are known to be important for figuring out the real reasons behind any deaths that occurred, but some cultures and religions have banned the practice of the autopsies, believing that it is too far from being human to rip up a human’s body apart right before it is supposed to be buried.

The University of Leicester in the UK introduced an alternate that is considered to be more dignifying and that is called the digital autopsy. This autopsy does not include any surgeries and it works by giving a jab of dye through a small slit in the neck of the victim and that gives an access to scanning the body fully through a CRT scan by diagraming out all of the blood vessels. This method has proven to be of a great accuracy and usefulness when it comes to figuring out the cause of death.
