𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗮: 𝗗𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄?...

Production began without a finished script. Scenes were often written the day of filming. During one driving sequence, Tom Cruise actually had to read his lines off cue cards attached to his windshield, which resulted in a minor car accident. For subsequent driving sequences, Cruise was fitted with a special earpiece to have lines fed to him.

Tom Cruise wanted Kurt Russell for the role of Rowdy Burns.

The scene where Harry tells Cole to go out and hit the pace car is based on a real-life situation with driver Buddy Baker and his crew chief at the time, Harry Hyde, on whom Harry Hogge is based.

NASCAR driver Greg Sacks did most of Tom Cruise's stunt driving. Cruise wanted to do his own stunt driving, but wasn't allowed to for insurance reasons.

Tom Cruise received a speeding ticket for doing 85 in a 55 mile-per-hour zone while working on this movie.

Upon seeing the film "the King" Richard Petty (so named because he holds the record for most wins in NASCAR Grand National history) said of the movie, "the only thing they got right was the numbers on the side of the cars!

Despite the budget overruns and delays, reportedly it was only after shooting was finished that the filmmakers discovered they had neglected to film Cole Trickle's car crossing the finish line at Daytona.

𝗘𝗽𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝟭𝟱: 𝗦𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗳𝗹𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀!

This week season 1 comes to an explosive end with Mark’s final movie pick… “Days of Thunder.” An adrenaline fuelled action/drama outing from Director Tony Scott that Stars Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman & Robert Duvall.

Set in the high-octane world of NASCAR the movie tells the tale of up-and-coming whizz-kid racing driver Cole Trickle (Cruise). With the help of veteran coach Harry Hogge (Duvall) Cole propels himself to the top rankings of American motorsport as he strives to realise his dreams and become the new champ. Along the way Cole must deal with an intense rivalry with the current top driver Rowdy Burns (Michael Rooker) and overcome his own fears and self-doubt in order to win the championship and the heart of the alluring Dr. Claire Lewicki (Kidman).

The usual digressions abound as the boys discuss the relation between creepiness & attractiveness, short man syndrome and bizarre methods of explaining drifting to your girlfriend. Somehow, they also find the time to pitch a Days of Thunder reboot entitled, “Nights of Lightning!” (Never coming to a Cinema near you!)

The film tells the story of up and coming racing protege "Cole Trickle" (Tom Cruise) as he seizes the opportunity to race at the top levels of Nascar and forms an intense rivalry with the current champion, "Rowdy Burns" (Michael Rooker).

𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀!

𝗔𝗶𝗿 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗢𝗻𝗲: 𝟰.𝟲 𝗣𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀

This week we braced for impact as we boarded Air Force One for a non stop thrill ride!

The 1997 action/drama classic is by no means a perfect film, yet scored a slightly above average score of 4.6 pints. Not too shabby! President James Marshall could launch a successful re-election campaign from a score like that!

𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗮: 𝗔𝗶𝗿 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗘𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄?...

Initially director Wolfgang Petersen was denied access to the real-life Air Force One. A telephone call from Harrison Ford to the White House soon changed that.

The lead role was written for Kevin Costner, but he was heavily committed to The Postman (1997), and suggested Harrison Ford for the part.

One day during filming, two F/A-18 fighters appeared and radioed in a surprised report that the plane they'd been asked to identify was Air Force One and there were bullet holes in it. (They were actually decals). The air traffic control center in Los Angeles knew about the filming, and was able to set them straight.

The in-fighting over the correct Presidential line of succession was inspired by the real-world conflict after President Ronald Reagan's assassination attempt. His Secretary of State, Alexander Haig, insisted he was in control of the government while Reagan was in surgery, attempting to bypass the Vice President.

Despite being the President of the United States, we never see James Marshall ever set foot on US soil in the entire film.

Wolfgang Petersen's commentary (and some other sources) says that the original script explained that Secret Service Agent Gibbs had been a CIA spook and had lost a lot due to the ending of the Cold War. He was angry at the U.S. Government, and knew the terrorists from his CIA days.

Despite being given multiple opportunities to leave, and despite being considered the most important person on the plane, President James Marshall is the last person to leave the plane alive.

Get ready to board the flight of your life as we take on the 1997 action/drama classic, "Air Force One."

Harrison Ford plays US President James Marshall, who is pretty much the best President ever.

On the way home from a groundbreaking conference in Russia, Air Force One is highjacked by terrorists. Luckily our plucky President is a former war hero!

Marshall must put all of his skills to the test as he fights to take back control of his airplane and save his family in the process!

𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘀!

𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗼𝘄𝗻: 𝟱/𝟭𝟬 𝗽𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀

This week we followed William "D-FENS" Foster as he goes on the offence (see what we did there?) Against anyone and anything that gets in his way.

The tense & violent drama/thriller got a mixed reaction from our cast, yet still landed a respectable 5 pints in our pint rsting system, which places it at number 10 in our Season 1 leaderboard.

With only two episodes left in season 1, will there be any major shakeups? Tune in next week to find out!

Movie Trivia: Falling Down Edition

Every studio in Hollywood turned down Ebbe Roe Smith's script. Producer Arnold Kopelson was getting to the stage of considering cable television, when Michael Douglas came across the script and pronounced it one of the best he'd ever read.

Iron Maiden's song "Man on the Edge" is based on this movie

The Foo Fighters music video for their song "Walk" is inspired by, and mimics the movie.

In one scene, Foster (Michael Douglas) says golf courses are a waste of space and that golf is for old men with nothing better to do. Ironically, Douglas is an avid golfer in real life.

As Bill Foster gets closer to home, the weapons he acquires become more lethal, as do the people from whom he acquires them. First, he acquires a bat from the store owner, then a butterfly knife from the gang member, a few minutes later an U*i from the same gang members car, and finally a rocket launcher from the surplus store owner.

The two bags that Bill Foster carry act as metaphors. The briefcase represents his responsible side, while the gym bag filled with guns represent his turn to disorganization and violence. He had the opportunity to give up one of the bags to the bum and he ultimately gives up his old life by giving up the briefcase.

Bill Foster starts out the film dressed in a simple white shirt and tie with black pants. By the climax of the film, he's dressed in all black, which serves as a metaphor for his declining mental state.

Although screen legends Michael Douglas and Robert Duvall are the leads, they don't appear together until near the end of the film.

We are back to Billy for his third and final pick of the season. This week we tackle the 1993 movie "Falling Down."

The film follows Michael Douglas as an everyman white collar worker having a pretty rough day. An onslaught of delays, inconveniences and encounters with idiots leads him to finally snap and wreak a trail of violence and destruction across the city.

We also discuss the pros and cons of watching films with subtitles on and which one of us is planning a mutiny and solo podcast already!

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗮... 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻!

Get ready to experience pretty much the worst day of a seemingly normal guy's life as we watch the 1993 film, "Falling Down".

We follow Michael Douglas as he portrays William Foster, a guy who just wants to get to his daughter's birthday party on time, yet seems to encounter delay and frustration at every turn. These annoyances eventually lead him to snap and unleash a violent and psychotic rampage across the city.

Hot on his heels is Detective Pendergast (Robert Duvall) who is supposed to enjoying an easy last day of work before he retires. Pendergast is drawn into Foster's whirlwind of violence and must put an end to it before it's too late!

This week "Crash Override" and his gang of strangely dressed hackers failed to electrify us. With an average score of 7.6 pints Hackers plummets to the bottom of our season 1 leaderboard. Oh dear.

𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗮: 𝗛𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗘𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻!

Jonny Lee Miller and Angelina Jolie were married shortly after the making of the film, and then were divorced four years late

The "Hacker Manifesto" read by Agent Bob was actually written by a hacker of great renown in the 1980s named Loyd Blankenship, who went by the name of The Mentor. It was published in PHRACK magazine in 1986.

The computer they break into is a fictional mainframe computer called a "Gibson" - a homage to cyberpunk author William Gibson.

The cast were given three weeks to hang out together, get to know each other better and learn how to Rollerblade properly before filming began. They also spent most of that time studying computers and hacking.

For the cyberspace sequences, director Iain Softley insisted on not using CGI.

At one point Eugene "The Plague" Belford uses the term "keyboard cowboy". This is likely a reference to the term "console cowboy" that author William Gibson uses in his novel Neuromancer.

Cyberdelia was built from scratch in an abandoned indoor swimming pool on the outskirts of London, with the center of the club in the depths of what was the pool. Producer Ralph Winter notes, "We never knew why, but the pool was designated an historic landmark, so great care had to be taken not to damage anything and to return it to its original state."

Jonny Lee Miller attended a hacking convention to help him get into character.
