St. Martin Parish – On March 8, 2024, shortly before 3:30 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop I was notified of a single-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on Louisiana Highway 347 near Guidry Road.

The crash claimed the life of 82-year-old Jannell Dore of Breaux Bridge.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 2006 Nissan Titan was traveling north on LA 347. At the same time, Dore was walking west, attempting to cross LA 347, when she was struck by the Nissan in the northbound lane.

Dore suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Martin Parish Coroner’s Office. The driver of the Nissan was not injured.

Impairment on the part of Dore is unknown, and a standard toxicology sample was obtained for analysis. The driver of the Nissan submitted a breath sample, which showed no alcohol present and displayed no signs of impairment. Toxicology results are pending, and this crash remains under investigation.

While nearly 70 percent of pedestrian fatalities occur at night, troopers urge pedestrians always to maintain heightened awareness while walking near the road. Simple precautions such as wearing reflective materials, avoiding distractions, not walking too close to roadways, and walking against traffic flow could prevent most pedestrian-related crashes.

Troop I has investigated eight fatal crashes, resulting in eight deaths in 2024.

BREAKING NEWS: TRAIN COLLISION CAUSES CHAOS IN NEW IBERIA AS IT DERAILS AFTER COLLIDING WITH AN 18-WHEELER

In a shocking turn of events on August 21, 2023, at around 5:00 p.m., distress calls flooded the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office reporting a catastrophic train derailment at the intersection of LA Highway 182 and Airport Boulevard. Swiftly responding to the crisis, deputies swiftly cordoned off surrounding roads to ensure public safety.

Sheriff Romero urgently appealed to the public, urging them to steer clear of Highway 182 as diligent crews commenced their arduous task of clearing the wreckage. Regrettably, this section of the highway will remain closed until further notice, necessitating commuters and students to devise alternative routes for their daily routines.

Providing a glimmer of relief, the Louisiana State Police Hazmat team has officially rescinded the evacuation order for residents residing near the derailment site. It is now deemed safe for these individuals to return to the comfort of their homes, alleviating some of the anxiety that has gripped the community.

However, it is important to note that Highway 182 remains inaccessible from Hwy 674 (NW Bypass) to Highway 88, causing significant disruptions to the flow of traffic. On the bright side, Highway 88 remains unaffected and open for use.

As the sun rises on a new day, the diligent efforts of BNSF continue to clear the debris obstructing Highway 182. Regrettably, the highway remains closed for the time being, inconveniencing countless individuals who rely on this vital route.

THREE MEN HEADED TO PRISON FOR DISTRIBUTING METHAMPHETAMINE AND ILLEGALLY POSSESSING FI****MS

SHREVEPORT, La. - United States Attorney Brandon B. Brown announced the sentencing of three defendants in connection with cases involving the trafficking of narcotics and illegal possession of a firearm. United States District Judge S. Maurice Hicks, Jr. sentenced the following individuals:

Cedric Bell, 55, of Shreveport, was sentenced to 180 months in prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release, on drug and fi****ms charges. On August 20, 2021, a Caddo Parish Probation Officer searched Bell’s clothing and found a digital scale and cash in his pockets. When questioned by the officer, Bell admitted that he had some pills in his car and consented to a search of the vehicle. While searching Bell’s vehicle, officers found at least 50 grams of methamphetamine, a Ta**us pistol, a Ta**us revolver, and ammunition. Officers then searched Bell’s home and found ten more fi****ms, including two short-barreled rifles and a silencer. Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms and Explosives (ATF) examined the fi****ms and determined they functioned as designed. Bell admitted to possession of the methamphetamine with intent to distribute and carrying and using fi****ms during a drug trafficking offense.

The case was investigated by the ATF and Caddo Parish Office of Probation and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Leon H. Whitten.

Demetrius Sumner, 44, of Shreveport, was sentenced to 60 months in prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release, on fi****ms charges. Sumner went to a local pawn shop in Shreveport in July 2021 and attempted to purchase four fi****ms. While completing the ATF Form 4473 to purchase the fi****ms, Sumner indicated on the form that he had not been convicted in any court of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence. When in truth and in fact, Sumner had been convicted of a domestic violence charge in Clark County, Nevada on August 3, 2017. After waiting several days and not receiving an answer on Sumner’s background check to purchase the fi****ms, the pawn shop released them to Sumner. However, ten days later, the pawn shop received information denying Sumner’s application check due to his prior conviction. Law enforcement agents got the fi****ms back from Sumner and he admitted to making a false statement to a fi****ms dealer about his prior conviction.

The case was investigated by the ATF and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tennille Gilreath.

In a separate and unrelated case, United States Judge Dee D. Drell sentenced Julius Bernard Washington, 39, of Natchitoches, Louisiana to 70 months in prison for distribution of methamphetamine. In October 2021, Washington sold methamphetamine to an individual which was later seized by law enforcement agents. The total amount of actual methamphetamine distributed by Washington was approximately 301.5 grams. Washington pleaded guilty to the charge on January 25, 2023.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office and Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office, and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Seth D. Reeg.
