দুঃখ সত্যের ব্যাখ্যা করতে গিয়ে বুদ্ধ বলেছেন-

জন্মও দুঃখময়, বার্ধক্যও দুঃখময়, মৃত্যু... শোক ক্রন্দন-মনের খিন্নতা, বিমর্ষতা, বিভ্রান্তি সবই দুঃখ।যে অপ্রিয় তাঁর সঙ্গে সংযোগ, যে প্রিয় তাঁর সঙ্গে বিয়োগ- দুঃখজনক।সংক্ষেপে পাঁচটি উপাদানই দুঃখের।

রূপ, বেদনা, সংজ্ঞা, সংস্কার, বিজ্ঞান এই পাঁচটি উপাদান স্কন্ধ।
