Not had a chance to check out our geolocated soundwalk? Is it a little too far away?

If you’d still like to hear what went on in our workshop, you can listen to the different chapters on our SoundCloud! (link in bio)

We’ll be sharing a video of the workshop soon, so stay in touch if you’d like to see what we got up to and how some of the sounds were created.

We had a lovely walk round Penshaw Hill and Herrington Park this afternoon, testing out our new soundwalk!

Thank you to Penshaw Tea Room and Farm Butchers and Love Lily Sunderland for letting us pop some of our leaflets in their lovely tea rooms! They share a little about our story, as well as helping you access the soundwalk to experience our version of The Lambton Worm for yourselves.

Our work was made possible by Sound and Music’s Composer-Curator programme in partnership with Sunderland Culture.

We’ve just sent these beautiful illustrated maps off to the printers. They cover the area in which our geolocated walk takes place, and will be the centre fold-out of our promotional leaflets. These will be dotted about the north east shortly!

The walk will launch early April, but if you’re reading this, you can tap the link in our bio to experience two versions now. One uses Echoes, and another uses Gesso. You can also click the SoundCloud icon to listen to the chapters as a short standalone story.

We had a great time at our workshop on Saturday. There were some great ideas, some gross sounds, and we can’t wait to get our story out into the world!

Special thanks to our guests and Mica Hind, our videographer , our hosts , and to .herron.photography for popping in to take some snaps.

Stay tuned for the next phase!

Matt Price from Soundrolling.com shares what it's like on "bring your pet to work day" for Sound Designers. Pets have played a key roles in creating some of the most iconic sound effects for films like Terminator 2, and Transformers.

On Saturday February 25th we're hosting a free storytelling and sound design workshop at Arts Centre Washington, as part of Sunderland Culture's Bright Lights Youth Arts Festival.

If you're interested in attending, or would just like to find out a little more about what we'll be doing, please follow the link on our pinned post.

They’re out in the world! Hopefully a few of you will come across our flyers over the next fortnight, inviting you to sign up to our storytelling and sound design workshop on February 25th at Arts Centre Washington (see pinned post).

We’re using the tale of The Lambton Worm as a vehicle for exploring creative recording techniques, all of which we will be directly relating back to practical applications you can use in your own projects.

If you play an instrument, you’re a sound designer. If you write songs, you’re a storyteller.

The workshop will also be a great forum for asking questions and learning about the music industry.

Our special guests Mica and Me Lost Me are both expert storytellers and world builders, our facilitators Northern Electric Festival and p4F: Portions For Foxes Gigs have almost forty years experience of gig booking and management between them, and our videographer Art Mouse knows how to run an independent festival or two, as well as record a music video.

We hope you’ll learn a lot, and we can’t wait to see you there!

Jake from Audio talks us through some effects to use in your sound design. All the effects used will usually come included with the free version of any DAW (Digital Audio Workstation), so you can start experimenting immediately.

The DAW that Jake uses is called FL Studio by Image-Line Software. Although there isn't a free version, they do offer a fully functional trial so you can check it out before parting with any cash.

We'll share videos showing a variety of DAWs, so feel free to ask us any questions.

Andrew Huang has been helping producers and sound designers for years now. His fun and easy to understand videos are great for beginners and experts alike. Here, he shares some of his favourite sound design tricks using Ableton.

You can try Ableton 11 free for 90 days to find out if it's for you. Their 'Lite' version (which is free) isn't on their store, but it's still available if you find you just want to play with the basics. It's ideal for getting to grips with recording. We create and deliver fun and interactive storytelling and sound design workshops, using folklore as a focus. Over the course of our next two workshops, we'll help attendees create an audio retelling of The Lambton Worm - both as a standalone story, and as an interactive sound walk - complete with original score, narration, and sound effects.

In the first workshop, we'll discuss storytelling and adapting tales for modern audiences. We'll look into finding inspiration, what sounds we can expect to come across, and how they can help bring our story to life. We'll introduce you to the myth of The Lambton Worm, talking through sonic touchstones, and then work on individual scenes from the tale, planning how to tell our story, and discussing what sounds would be effective.

In the second workshop, we'll be creating and recording the sound effects that will breathe life into our tale. We'll also record the lines of various characters in the story, as well as narration of the plot. At each stage we'll look at recording techniques and different microphones; finding the best tools for the job, or throwing the rules out the window and experimenting! Finally, we'll look at how music can affect the mood of a scene, and discuss ideas of what we could incorporate into each piece as the story progresses.

Attendees will gain a greater understanding of sound design, how to bring stories and characters to life, and how to create different moods and emotions through music. We hope the workshops offer a fun and inspiring initial professional experience, and will be a great addition to any developing portfolio, or future CV.
