Severe thunderstorms are likely over much of Victoria this afternoon! Some of these may become supercells with the risk of large hail, destructive wind, and a tornado in areas around, Echuca, Shepparton, Bendigo, Ballarat, and Melbourne.

* VICTORIAN THUNDERSTORM FORECAST FOR TODAY, FRIDAY, 5 FEBRUARY 2021 *

Image source - Melbourne Storm Chasers.
Information source - Bureau of Meteorology.

Thunderstorms are a risk across most of Victoria today, consisting of two main bands of activity. Storms have already been observed over central, northeastern and western areas and this activity will increase during the morning before gradually moving eastwards to over the North East and East Gippsland during the mid-afternoon. The second band of thunderstorms is expected across the central districts and North East district during the afternoon and evening.

Severe thunderstorms are a significant risk with heavy rainfall and damaging wind gusts the most likely severe phenomena. Thunderstorm organisation in the form of supercells is also possible, particularly with the second band of thunderstorms over central districts. Supercell storms may produce damaging to locally destructive winds and large hail.

Please note that a Severe Weather Warning is current for heavy rainfall and damaging winds over central and eastern areas.

There is a slight chance of thunderstorms about the South West coast during the evening that have the potential to produce localised damaging wind gusts.

* A TROUGH TO BRING THUNDERSTORMS AND RAIN TO THE EASTERN HALF OF VICTORIA ON MONDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING *

A trough will deepen across central Victoria tomorrow as a front approaches Victoria. This will produce showers and storms across the eastern half of the state, but more widespread over the far east.

The most likely severe phenomena with storms will be the risk of heavy rainfall. Small hail may also be possible in storms but is a lesser risk at this stage. Storms will be steered from the NW to the SE and may be slow-moving.

There is also the chance of a shower or two across southern areas of the state in the evening.

The image below shows predicted rainfall totals according to the ECWWF model (as processed by Weatherzone) for the period 8 pm Sunday, 31st January to 5 am Tuesday, 2 February.

A deepening low-pressure trough is expected to enter western Victoria early on Friday morning and then track slowly across the state on Friday and Saturday.

This trough is loaded up with tropical moisture and plenty of rain and thunderstorm activity is expected today and Friday, with the activity contracting to the east on Saturday. Windy conditions are also expected over southern districts during this time.

Isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected inland during today, increasing from the west in the late evening with the approach of the trough.

On Friday widespread rain and thunderstorms are predicted in western and central areas with local heavy falls forecast.

The image shows predicted rainfall totals according to the ECWWF model (as processed by Weatherzone) for the period 11 pm Wednesday 27th January to 11 pm Saturday 30th January.

Widespread falls in excess of 40 mm are indicated with 60 mm+ totals predicted over northern parts of the State. Of special note are those totals of 100 mm+ predicted for northwestern parts of the Northern Country. Friday is expected to be the main day for this activity.

Watch for the possible issue of flood warnings for some of the northern districts over the next 3 days.
