During a campaign stop in Edinburg, Texas this week, Gov. Greg Abbott (R) expressed support for cannabis law reforms in the state, saying that low-level cannabis possession “is not the type of violation” that state officials “want to stockpile jails with,” according to a 25 News report. The comments come as one of the governor’s challengers, former Democratic U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke, has included legalization as part of his campaign platform.

In his November announcement declaring his gubernatorial bid, O’Rourke said that cannabis legalization was an issue “most of [Texans] actually agree on.”

— Maybe a generation ago, Olivia Letters and her friends would have had drinks together. Now, they mostly smoke pot.

"In my circle — I'm 30 — people drink less alcohol and smoke more w**d, at least in ," she said in an interview inside NETA's Brookline cannabis store.

If there's any doubt about w**d's popularity, just hit the road — billboards are seemingly everywhere advertising recreational ma*****na stores. The numbers back it up, too.

Since adult-use opened in Massachusetts in November 2018, gross total sales have now reached $2.54 billion, according to data from the Cannabis Control Commission.

While tax data shows is hardly plummeting, the meteoric rise in cannabis use speaks to changing about recreational alcohol and ma*****na use.

A new study from Augusta University, focused on glioblastoma, one of the deadliest and fastest growing forms of brain tumors, reveals that cannabidiol (CBD) is a beneficial form of treatment. The prognosis for glioblastoma is a 15 month survival rate following diagnosis, based on data from the Glioblastoma Foundation. Despite new research on the cancer over the last 15 years, survival has only increased by two months, explains Dr. Martin Rutkowski, a Medical College of Georgia at AU neurosurgeon, and one of the study’s researchers.

The researchers used mice subjects who were made to produce the tumors internally, and they were then administered with inhaled CBD. After this, the tumors reduced in size noticeably compared to the mice who were not given any CBD. In addition, they found that CBD seemed to obstruct at least 3 components that are required for angiogenesis to occur.

More than one-third of software programmers say they’ve used cannabis while working, with many finding that it helps promote creativity and get them into the “programming zone,” according to a new study.

Researchers at the University of Michigan said that anecdotal evidence suggested that those in programming were more likely to use cannabis on the job, so they set out to conduct the “first large-scale survey” on the topic, asking 803 developers to detail how ma*****na comes into play in their work.

A main motivation for the study was the fact that drug testing policies remain common in the programming sector, which may be contributing to “hiring shortages for certain jobs.”

Nearly two decades ago, on a high desert road in San Bernardino County, Sara Rodriguez was pulled over and arrested with 10 small packets of cannabis in her car. She was convicted of a felony, possession of the drug for sale, and eventually spent more than two years in prison.

In the years since, Rodriguez, 39, became the first in her family to go to college, and in June graduated from with a master’s degree in welfare.

But Rodriguez still has a on her record — a potential black mark for employers and the state social work licensing board.

When legalized cannabis for recreational use in 2016, one promise was the creation of a legal pathway through the courts for clearing many past ma*****na-related convictions or reducing them to a lesser charge.
-
It was a step championed by reform advocates, meant to right many of the injustices inflicted by the nation’s war on drugs that was disproportionately waged on poor people and communities of color.
-
But despite a 2018 law intended to speed up and automate the process, tens of thousands of Californians like Rodriguez are still stuck with felonies, misdemeanors and other convictions on their records, a Times investigation found.

A study that suggests components of cannabis can prevent coronavirus infections has sparked quite a buzz on social media.

And in case you’re wondering, smoking w**d won’t protect against the virus, experts say.

Two cannabis sativa plant compounds — CBGA and CBDA — were found to prevent coronavirus and its “emerging variants” from infecting human kidney cells in a laboratory, peer-reviewed study by researchers at Oregon State University.

The compounds did so by binding “to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, blocking a critical step in the process the virus uses to infect people,” according to a Jan. 10 university news release about the research.

The work has attracted loads of attention and says that alongside vaccines, “small-molecule therapeutic agents are needed to treat or prevent infections” by coronavirus.

“All this time we’ve been listening to the CDC, we should have been eating CBD,” joked comedian Jimmy Kimmel on TV Jan 12 about the study, mentioning another cannabis compound that’s sometimes legally sold in stores, the New York Times reported.
-
The more familiar psychoactive cannabis compound — THC — produces a sense of euphoria when smoked or ingested in edibles.

“The first thing to note before everyone goes out tries to prevent COVID-19 infection via pot smoking is that these are in vitro experiment,” Dr. Michael Beazely, an associate professor at University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, told McClatchy News.

This means human kidney cells were tested, not humans themselves.

Additionally, “the study used h**p derived CBD and CBG-A in quantities virtually impossible to obtain from smoking w**d,” former cannabis lawyer Kirk Tousaw pointed out on Twitter Jan. 12.

Montana was one of four states where voters approved legalization proposals at the ballot in 2020.

The findings of a new study suggest that cannabis decriminalization policy reduces the racial disparity in arrests for possession.

Racial disparity between Blacks and Whites in cannabis-related crimes has been widely reported over the years.

Blacks have been disproportionately more likely to be arrested for cannabis possession than Whites.

Researchers from the University of California San Diego have tried to assess whether decriminalization can reduce racial disparity in arrests for cannabis possessions.

“Ontarians chose to purchase more than half of their cannabis through legal channels, as Ontario’s legal market share increased to 54.2 percent, up from 47.1 percent the previous quarter.”

The figure is based on data collected by Statistics Canada from cannabis consumers, who may have a tendency to under-report purchases from unlicensed sources.

“When it comes to the unregulated market, (sales) are a difficult number to pinpoint, but assuming the reporting is true, it’s not hard to believe,” said - Jennawae McLean, co-founder of Calyx + Trichomes,. “The number of stores in Ontario has grown exponentially over the last… two years. The frequency of epileptic seizures among 10 children treated with whole-plant cannabis medicine fell by an average of 86%, according to research published in the journal BMJ Paediatrics Open outlined by SciTechDaily. None of the children in the study had responded to any other conventional treatments.

Just two of the children who participated in the study responded to Epidyolex, the only purified CBD product children with seizure conditions are allowed access to under England’s National Health Service (NHS). The children who participated in the study ranged from ages one to 13, with an average age of six, and had a range of epileptic conditions, including infantile spasms, learning disabilities, and global developmental delays, the report says.

Parents and caregivers reported significant improvements in their child’s sleep, appetite, behavior, and cognition after they started to take whole-plant cannabis medicine, and only a few minor side effects, such as fatigue, were reported.

At first, Joann Fouquette's son, Ezra, was hitting all the milestones. It's what every new mom hopes for: a happy, healthy baby.

But around 17 months, things started to change. He stopped speaking. He started covering his ears and hitting his head on the floor like something was bothering him.

Fouquette remembers her mom telling her, "I think we need to get him tested. There's something definitely going on there."
-
Five months later, in 2012, Ezra was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.

"It's devastating," she told CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta. "I've heard people compare it to like losing a child. You lose the idea of the child that you were gonna have, the life that you were gonna have, the life that he's gonna have."

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects 1 in 44 children in the United States, according to the CDC. It begins early in life, and the core symptoms are social and communication issues as well as repetitive behaviors and rigidity.

"They may speak very well, but they can't carry on a conversation. Then you have the opposite end of the spectrum, where you have and who are entirely nonverbal," said Dr. Doris Trauner, a and distinguished professor of and at the University of , San Diego.

"They have a certain routine. They like to do things over and over again," she told Gupta. "They have repetitive behaviors, the most typical of which are things like hand-flapping or spinning in circles."

But can also lead to more troubling issues like severe disruptive behavior and self-harm.

Visa recently issued a compliance memo stating that they are "aware of a scheme” around the country—“cashless ATM” point-of-sale (POS) transactions. A merchant takes an order, rounds up the total to an even number, and then runs a transaction, miscoded as an ATM withdrawal. 🏧

With limited options in a mostly cash-based industry, businesses will try just about anything to make credit and debit card purchases possible.

As cannabis is Schedule I, most banks won't work with dispensaries. And all major credit cards like Visa avoid the industry like the plague, afraid of repercussions from the feds.

While 420 companies weren’t explicitly mentioned—the memo is clearly directed at them given the prevalence of cashless (aka "reverse") ATMs in this biz. Will businesses "found in material non-compliance with Visa Rules" be subject to penalties?

We don’t often think of our neighbors up north in . We know it’s cold, that they have a leader who most people agree looks good even if they disagree with his policies, and that they don’t drive polar bears to work but sometimes have to drive around them.

Besides this, did you know that a couple of years ago, they accomplished what our leaders have failed to do and legalized cannabis country-wide? It’s true: Canadian Federal cannabis legalization is a win for enthusiasts everywhere in proving that large-scale change is still possible.

In October of 2018, stores were open country-wide, and the public has had access to legal cannabis that has seen reductions in possession-related crime from 26,402 in 2018 to just 46 in 2019.

The elimination of unfair arrests and limitations on medical users is cause enough to celebrate, but the massive economic impact that growers, researchers, and retailers contribute yearly (about $4 billion in 2021) is equally impressive. Crime, smuggling, or bootlegging has not seen the spike that naysayers predicted—in short; everyone has won something by legalization.

So how did Canada, the peace-loving nation of lumberjacks and donut enthusiasts, cross party lines and become the second-ever country to legalize cannabis nationwide? Here’s our take on Canadian cannabis legalization and its story.

Reposted from Beard Bros®] The story was alarming and spread quickly:

Two Springfield high school students had been admitted to the emergency department having smoked ma*****na laced with fentanyl.

“It took 8 hits of Narcan to revive one of the unconscious youth,” the story, claiming to be from “The Baystate Emergency Room” stated.

The teens claimed the fentanyl-laced ma*****na had come from a cannabis dispensary, one version of the message stated.
-
The story, passed up to the Hampden District Attorney’s office and then forwarded to various community partners this week, was rapidly spread via email and social media through area school and police departments by community members concerned that fentanyl — a powerful synthetic opioid 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine — had made it into a now legal and widely used drug.

The problem is that none — or at least most — of the story does not appear to be true.

“There’s no evidence to my knowledge that occasional [adult] ma*****na use has harmful effects. I don’t know of any scientific evidence of that. I don’t think it has been evaluated,” said Volkow, who is a psychiatrist. ”We need to test it.”

Volkow did however restate that she is “absolutely” worried about higher rates of ma*****na use and that frequent (daily) consumption, in the long run, can produce “harmful effects even on the adult brain.”
