Every so often, I watch a film, or in this case, rewatch a film that makes me aware of how soft and civilized I am compared to the characters in it. This is one such film.

Jeremiah Johnson is a 1972 American Western film directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Robert Redford, in what I think is his finest role, as Jeremiah Johnson, a mountain man who seeks his fortune in the wilderness after becoming disillusioned with civilization. Everything Johnson goes through in this movie is an example of harsh but ultimately fulfilling living.

Cinematographer David Watkin uses a variety of techniques to create a sense of realism and immersion, such as using natural light and shooting on location in the Rocky Mountains. The film's visual style is also characterized by its use of long takes and slow pans, which allow the audience to appreciate the vastness of the landscape. I was awestruck by the scenery for nearly the entirety of the film.

Jeremiah Johnson is a beautifully crafted and moving film that I consider a masterwork of the Western genre. The film's stunning cinematography, powerful performances, and timeless themes make it a must-see for fans of Westerns and anyone who appreciates a story about self-reliance and survival.

This movie is available for rent on multiple platforms for less than five dollars. I highly recommend seeking it out and watching it. You will never forget it.

Greetings, Fellow True Believers!

ERG the Battler #1, published by Star Cross Comics, LLC., written by Evan David and drawn by Samir Simao, is set in a time after the fall of Eden but 650 years before the flood. David spins a tale of a speculative fantasy world that puts my mind to Robert E. Howard’s alternate primeval prehistoric Hyperborea. Much like Conan, Erg appears to be a freebooting sell-sword hiring himself out for anyone with the coin. He is heroic and charismatic albeit a little self-serving as any mercenary would be.

This book scores points for having the same artist doing the cover and the interiors. I always like it when that is the case. However, Samir Simao’s cover art looks rushed and unfinished compared to his work on the sequential pages. The art is in black and white, which usually works fine for a story in this genre, but Simao’s art style is not really gritty enough to stand on its own, here, and would have really shined with the right colorist on board. Other than that, the art is pretty good. Simao’s storytelling ability and action sequences are excellent. His panels feature well-drawn characters with rich backgrounds.

Evan David’s worldbuilding is minimal but effective. I’m sure we’ll be given more lore for the setting as the series progresses, though. The story opens with a father frantically gathering up his children to flee a powerful enemy. The three of them make their way to a settlement where the father has heard that he can find the one called Erg the Battler! Will they be able to convince Erg to aid them? And can they stay ahead of their foe long enough to reach safety? The plot is driven by good dialog and sparse narration. There is drama, intrigue, adventure, and A DINOSAUR-DRIVEN CARRIAGE!

In summary, Erg the Battler #1 is a pretty good read that I recommend. The heroes are heroic and the villains are truly villainous. The plot is engaging and the dialogue is easy to follow. Evan David does a good job of pulling the reader and Samir Simao does a good job of keeping them there. Lastly, I must say that I think the concept behind this book is outstanding. There is a massive opportunity to tell fantastic stories in this pre-flood world where mythical creatures, giants, and dinosaurs are all walking the Earth!

So pick up your copy and get reading!

Greetings, Fellow True Believers!

Today I bring you something truly special! A book that impressed me so much that I have made my very first video review for it!

Starblades Volume 1 from All Caps Comics and sole creator Kyle Ritter is an amazing book that I thoroughly enjoyed reading! This book is simply beautiful and every page is a visual feast for the eyes. The line art is stellar and the story is pretty good to boot! This comic is a love letter to every Saturday morning super show you ever saw and it really took me back to my childhood. And on top of it all, I was lucky enough to get a variant cover with Kyle's autograph!

I can't recommend this book highly enough. I don't know where you can get it right now, but I encourage everyone to hunt one down and claim it!

Greetings, Fellow True Believers!

Tonight, we turn our attention back to the Remnantverse with "Parables" #0 featuring Thief In The Night from Christian comic book publisher GROK Comics! This tale is penned by Evan David and illustrated by Olan Orig. As with the other works from Grok I have read, the Christian message is there but does not overshadow the quality of the book as a form of entertainment.

As I have mentioned in the past, I really like it when the same artist does the cover of a book and the interior pages, too. Olan Orig has done a stellar job with both! The sequential pages are expertly composed with very good linework. Orig's backgrounds and his cityscapes, in particular, give the sense that the characters are anchored solidly in a real environment and not simply propped up in front of a backdrop.

The plot is engaging, and the dialog is well-crafted and believable. Evan David has shown his ability to tell an entertaining story that satisfies the reader for the moment, yet leaves one wanting just a little bit more.

Thief In The Night is, himself, a striking character both figuratively and literally! David has done an excellent job of investing the reader in the character by giving him real depth and direction in just a few pages. Orig, compatibly, brings Thief In The Night to life with bold lines and sweeping action. I would love to see more from this creative team.

I enjoyed this book and the more I see from Grok!, the more I like them. I will keep reading and I highly recommend everyone pick them up.

Greetings, Fellow True Believers!

Let us take a look back through the years at a line of comics whose flame burned so very brightly for all too short of a time. The Ultraverse from Malibu Comics! I collected these titles extensively as they were published in the early nineties and hated to see them fade away into obscure comic book history. They are gone, yes, but they are not forgotten! Today, we'll examine one of the flagship heroes of that line, Prime!

Ultraverse "Prime #1" introduces the superhero named Prime to the world. Prime is seen combating a variety of evil-doers, ranging from creepy grownups taking advantage of young girls to local drug dealers, and to international terrorists all in a day or two. During this time, it is clear that this incredibly power ultrahuman is effectively invulnerable, has limitless physical strength, and can fly at incredible speeds!

"Ultraverse Prime #1" serves as an introduction to Prime's abilities and reveals a shocking secret regarding his true nature. At the end of the story, we are left wondering not only who, but indeed what is Prime?

If you have never heard of the Ultraverse or Malibu comics, I highly recommend that you seek them out and read them! It will be a bit of a scavenger hunt but they can be found online and among the long boxes of back-issues in many a local comic book shop! Good hunting and good reading!

Greetings, Fellow True Believers!

It's time to turn our attention to "Roundhouse Hooligans" #2 from Free Fall Comics!

This issue continues the story from issue one (big surprise, I know) with the same creative team.

I have to be honest, while the design of the book and sequential layouts are nice, the art looks really rushed and borders on being lazy. The fact that I read it and will probably back the campaign for issue three is a credit to the general flow of the book. Also, I generally don't like mundane action/drama/crime stories but I was entertained by this one so there is that.

If I could offer any advice to this team on this title, I would say to get Faccini to tighten up his art, big time. I took a look at some of his other work and I believe he has more ability than he's showing us, here. He certainly has a good eye for cover design and sequential storytelling. On the writing front, I would like to see the story being filled out more. I'm still seeing a lot of sparse panels concerning narration and page nine has a completely empty sequence that could have used some flavor. Don't be afraid to get more verbose, guys.

In summary, I had fun with this book. I love to see potential grow into something and these guys at Free Fall Comics are chock full of potential! Their stuff is worth reading and at their price points for digital books, you won't break the bank. I say give them a try.

"The Fall of the House of Usher" on Netflix isn't what I thought it was going to be. Sort of.

When the trailer dropped, I commented that it looked like hot burning trash. It is not, in fact, hot burning trash. But it also is not an adaptation of any of Poe's work. What it appears to be so far is a creepy horror drama with references via names, locations, and props, to Poe's works, which I can appreciate.

The cast is excellent and I was drawn into the plot almost immediately. The story centered around one of the most powerful families in the world. They run a huge big pharma corp called "Fortunato's", wink, wink, and have their fingers into all manner of industries. The company and the family are embroiled in a vicious legal battle and in the middle of it all, a shocking revelation about a possible betrayal from their inner circle rocks their sense of invincibility.

This series promises to deliver chills, intrigue, and lots of fun Edgar Allan Poe easter eggs to look for. I'm looking forward to watching more episodes.

Greetings, Fellow True Believers!

I don’t know what I was expecting when I ordered “Cyberfrog Warts and All” from All Caps Comics but for $30, I received a 416-page behemoth you could use to beat whales to death.

Forgoing my primal urge to jump on a ship and hunt down Moby Dick, I instead decided to begin reading this tome of EVS history, for that is precisely what it is. This is a genuine record of all things Cyberfrog from the 1990s and let me tell you, this is pure 90s insanity at its finest. The first story is rough, funny, and ultraviolet in the way many other 90s titles were that fell outside the umbrella of the Big Two. It is interesting to see Van Sciver’s art evolve over time as one goes through this cyclopedia cyber amphibia. The early work has a strong TMNT vibe both visually and narratively. There is barely a fourth wall to break as we are introduced to Cyberfrog and his haphazard and mysterious existence.

It’s going to take me a while to read the entire volume, but it has already cemented itself as one of my go-to books to pick up and read a few pages from when taking short breaks, eating lunch, or sitting on my throne in the royal reading room.

At thirty bucks for a book this big and of this print quality, I don’t see how you can go wrong if you decide to pick it up. I’ve been enjoying it so far and I’ll probably get a lot of mileage out of it before I’m done. This book is, in my opinion, an excellent jumping-on-point for anyone who wants to start reading Cyberfrog.

Greetings, fellow True Believers!

Today, we turn our attention to “Alan Scott: Green Lantern” #1.

I am aware of the controversy surrounding this book and the way Tim Sheridan has attempted to promote it, but I am evaluating it on its merits as a comic book, only.

The cover, by David Talaski, is very pretty and done in the style of a painted movie poster from the 30s or 40s.

Cian Tormey’s art is excellent, with clean, bold lines that I love to see in comic books. His composition of each scene is strong and Alan Scott’s costume transformation on page 12 is pretty cool.

The colors by Matt Herms stand out pleasantly and he’s done a nice job of shading with colors in the absence of the line art doing it. I assume this was by design and it turned out well.

Together, the art and colors make me feel right at home as a comic book reader. This is the style of art I love to see in comics. Clean and vibrant.

Tim Sheridan has introduced an Alan Scott with whom I am not familiar. This version of Scott is not particularly heroic and seems to be a bit self-serving. It appears that he is interested in helping people but only on his own terms and not as part of a team. Sheridan manages to give Scott some depth by highlighting his inner conflict with his nature as a gay man in the mid-twentieth century.

However, this book is dominated by Scott’s sexual orientation and his love life. While Sheridan attempts to effectively intertwine these themes with the main story, it's just too much romance for my taste. Personally, I enjoy superhero comics that are focused on the hero/villain dynamic as much as possible. As prominent as the romantic element is, though, it doesn’t completely distract from the plot so I plan to continue reading the title for now.

In conclusion, I’d say that this book is worth reading. The art is great and the story is pretty good. There are some gritty elements that I feel don’t always mix well with my idea of good superhero stories, but it’s not a deal breaker so far.

In all my years as a lover of movies of many genres, I have somehow allowed a paragon of filmmaking to go unwatched for over twenty years. It is a shame that I will now confess and seek to rectify.

"Zoolander," the 2001 silver screen triumph directed by and starring the incomparable Ben Stiller, is a tour de force that transcends the boundaries of traditional comedy. With its razor-sharp wit, unequaled satire, and unrelenting brilliance, this film stands as a true masterpiece of cinematic artistry.

At the heart of this opus lies Ben Stiller's mesmerizing portrayal of the eponymous Derek Zoolander. Stiller's ability to embody the clueless yet lovable male supermodel is a revelation. His nuanced performance delves deep into the complexities of a character whose journey from self-absorption to self-realization is both poignant and deeply resonant.

The film's exploration of the superficial world of high fashion is a stroke of genius. Stiller's directorial vision, combined with the stellar performances of co-stars Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell, creates an exquisite tapestry of humor and social commentary. The narrative unfolds with a masterful blend of absurdity and astute critique, delving into the human condition while retaining an unrelenting comedic edge.

The iconic moments within "Zoolander" resonate as pure cinematic gold. From the legendary 'Blue Steel' pose to the incisive deconstruction of the fashion industry's shallow nature, each scene is a meticulously crafted masterwork. The film's quotable dialogue and unforgettable one-liners have entrenched themselves into the cultural lexicon, solidifying "Zoolander" as a timeless classic.

The film's multifaceted layers peel back the veneer of glamour to reveal a stark commentary on society's obsession with image and the human desire for validation. It's this profound depth that elevates "Zoolander" from mere comedy to a work of important social relevance and unparalleled artistic merit.

The story is worthy of the cast and crew with a plot full of passion, personal struggle, love, hate, betrayal, and reconciliation with a final climatic emotional resolution that made this viewer shamelessly shed a single masculine tear.

In conclusion, "Zoolander" stands as an extraordinary cinematic achievement, a work that not only entertains but challenges and enlightens its audience. Its impeccable performances, astute social commentary, and timeless humor solidify its place among the pantheon of cinematic greatness, deserving of recognition at the highest echelons of the industry.

"Zoolander" is currently available on Amazon Prime.

"Horror Express" is a British/Spanish horror film released in 1972, currently available to stream on . It was directed by Eugenio Martín. Starring Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, and Telly Savalas, this film brings together the two iconic actors known for their genre-defining contributions to horror with Savalas in a stand-out supporting role. The movie unfolds aboard the Trans-Siberian Express, where a mysterious and ancient creature threatens the lives of the passengers and crew.

The story revolves around a discovery in the frozen wilderness—a prehistoric creature found by an anthropologist, Professor Sir Alexander Saxton (Christopher Lee). Because it is always a great idea to do so, Saxton digs the creature out of the ice and takes it with him. As the creature is transported aboard the Trans-Siberian Express, a series of inexplicable events, murders, and mysterious occurrences plague the train. The tension escalates as the passengers and crew become entangled in the horrifying and suspenseful events that unfold.

Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, who have often shared the screen in numerous horror classics, both deliver the usual strong performances fans have come to expect. Their chemistry and charisma in the horror genre contribute to the authenticity and depth of their characters. Telly Savalas, though only in a supporting role, dominates every scene he is in with an entertaining and memorable performance. Special mention is in order for his character’s stunning costuming which really makes him stand out among an otherwise drably colored cast of characters.

The film's setting on a confined train creates a claustrophobic and intense atmosphere, amplifying the suspense and fear among the characters. The film effectively blends mystery, science fiction, and horror elements. There is a sinister ambiance to this movie and the use of practical effects and makeup to present the terrifying nature of the ancient creature, are on par with similar genre pieces of the era.

While "Horror Express" can and should be appreciated for its nostalgic charm and the powerful performances of its cast, some viewers may find the pacing to be a little slow in certain parts. Additionally, the plot, while engaging, may feel somewhat convoluted in its attempts to incorporate various elements of horror and science fiction.

"Horror Express" is a cult classic, loved by fans of vintage horror films and followers of the iconic cast. The film offers a unique blend of horror, mystery, and science fiction, taking advantage of its claustrophobic setting to deliver an engaging and eerie experience. While it may not be without flaws, the film's classic appeal, strong performances, and chilling atmosphere make it a worthwhile watch for enthusiasts of vintage horror cinema.
