Given the situation generated by the evolution of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), and in order to adopt measures aimed at protecting the health of the residents of Spain, during the State of Alarm that has started today, the National Police has notified the public that the online booking system for the provision of documents including the provision of NIE and residency certificates will be suspended until further notice.

Likewise, appointments that have already been booked will be cancelled.

BANKS IN SPAIN REQUEST A CERTIFICATE OF NON RESIDENCE

If you have a non-resident bank account in Spain, the provision of the Certificate of Non Residence is mandatory and such certificate must be renewed periodically.

It is possible that, when you opened the bank account, you already authorised the bank to request from the authorities the certificate and its renewal on your behalf but please note that this would incur additional costs that will be automatically debited from your account.

If such authorisation hasn't been granted and the Certificate of Non Residence is not being provided to the bank within a set period of time (i.e. three months), the bank account will automatically be blocked. This might cause various issues such us not being able to pay community fees, IBI, garbage tax and any other costs of the property for the payment of which a direct debit is in place.
