Another kit for the growing going together. This time a lobster claw caliper on early Ford hub and spindles, clocked at the front position just like they were at Indy! This kit will accept either bolt-through or the blind-hole style steering arms and should clear just about any normal front wheel.

Here’s our Champ brake setup on a Champ quickchange with 9-Inch Ford axles modified by to accept six-pin knock-off Halibrand hubs and, of course, Halibrand wheels. Position of caliper is due to torsion bar interference on this particular application but can be rotated in any position.

Also available in five-lug bolt patterns for you “normies”! 😬

Front brakes are a wrap! Got the final pieces of the puzzle sorted today and we’re no longer in mock-up land.

Next step is to develop a modern alternative to the old way of sleeving the caliper bores to save these old bastards as they all seem to have rotten bores causing them to leak like a sieve.

From concept to reality, we went from an idea on a computer screen to 3-D printed test parts to laser cut and machined aluminum parts. Rear brakes are finalized and we’re just waiting for a few parts and the fronts will be as well. If you’re holding and you need to put a kit together, hit us up, as we can put together a kit for just about any of the combinations offered!

Special thanks to Derek and for the help on getting everything sorted!

Will be at tomorrow so come by and say “hey”, space U-something or other. Look for the aisle 6 sign on the light pole and head opposite the portapotties. 😬

Five-lug Halibrand disc brake kits are a wrap! We have all the parts to build a disc brake setup using your OG Halibrand calipers. Champ single- and double-piston as well as the super fashionable Lobster Claw style use a 12-inch rotor while the smaller Midget double-piston calipers use a slightly smaller diameter rotor. Rear kits are also available for 9-inch Ford Torino ends!

These are the five different calipers Halibrand offered through the years, as far as I know. While there are variations, these are the five basic examples that I’ve found. From left, single piston finned Champ (also referred to as “lobster claw”), single/dual piston Champs, and single/dual piston Midgets. Champ brakes used a 12-inch rotor, while the smaller Midget line used a 9-inch rotor, though we’ve had success using these in slightly larger 11-inch rotors as well.

We have rotor and bracket kits available for early Ford applications using YOUR Halibrand calipers, contact us for more details!

Vintage race car/one-off setups are also possible!!

Finalized the CAD drawings for the brake setup and it’s off to the rapid prototyping machine! Actually, not very rapid as the front bracket took 6 hours to print, but it’s a cheap and effective way to check your work when you’re an amateur…

Once the fit and design is accepted, it’ll be time to find a CNC shop to knock out a handful of parts. Any leads?

A couple line drawings to tease the full CAD files of the front Halibrand Indy Champ disc brakes. Originals were done in 6 pin on a 5-inch bolt center which won’t clear ‘40 Ford hubs nor can they be drilled out to 5x5 1/2” BC. A problem for sure, but one that can be solved. Once the CAD models are vetted via 3D printing, the files will be sent off to be CNC machined. Traditional? Who cares if it gets the job done!

The second harness consists of a core of five 12ga wires followed by a layer of thirteen 14-16ga wires followed by a loose layer of eight 18ga wires. Not exactly as per spec but the rules on this can be fast and loose for our application and will suit our needs just fine.

Messing around with a little wiring for the Joe Kugel roadster. With the power center mounted in the trunk, it seemed to make sense to use this process to keep the two bundle of wires going to the front of the car as small and flexible as possible. This harness consists of two 12-gauge wires as the core layer, followed by nine 18-gauge wires. The other harness will consist of 26 wire of various sizes, should be fun!

And the first trial piece in place on the . The final product was much cleaner and the splines matched those on the sector shaft, the threads were in place on the pinch bolt, and the taper for the tie rod end was good enough to get a good interference fit for the drag link.

Though the cowl steering ended up to be a practice in futility, as it suffered from pretty severe bump steer (unsurprisingly!), the project served as a proof of concept for the process that we will definitely be using in the future!

Got the all set up, even built a surround to keep things clean and the temps consistent. Been printing a handful of parts for different builds to hash out ideas and check fitment, clearance, etc. before the final part is cut/machined/fabricated. Pretty cool to be able to think up an idea, draw it up in CAD, and have it in hand ready to fit in only a couple hours!

Used a length of 3/4DD for the bottom shaft and a section of steering shaft with early Ford taper up top to keep our options open when it comes to steering wheel selection. Locking function on the ‘40 drop is fully functional, as it should be. 🤙🏻 Time to modify the ‘40 box and mate the two together.

With the box set aside, we managed to stuff a ‘40 Ford cross steer box between the 2-port and the Chevy block for the win!!
