National Missing Children's Day on May 25th serves as a reminder to continue our efforts to reunite missing children with their families and an occasion to honor those dedicated to this cause. Missing children are vulnerable to s*x trafficking and exploitation.
According to the FBI, there were over 300,000 reported missing children in 2020. Stephanie Myers with is helping parents find their children before they are lost forever. Hear more on episode 14–out now.
Join us as we hear Forensic Nurse Examiner, Mary Suchetka, talk about her work in the trenches. Mary has cared for victims of s*x and labor trafficking, r**e, s*xual assault, and domestic violence for over 25 years. While Mary was caring for these victims, she met with Ohio's Attorney General’s Office and presented a proposal that allows Forensic Nurse Examiners to work alongside law enforcement and participate in sting operations in the rescue and recovery of s*x trafficking victims. Working alongside the detectives, advocates, and other law enforcement, this allows all involved to close the loop to protect the victims from their pimps and johns.
Plenty of times, nurses are the first encounter with a human trafficking victim. Join us as we hear Forensic Nurse Examiner, Mary Suchetka talk about her work in the trenches on episodes 11 and 12.

People sometimes respond to abuse or trafficking situations with “well, why didn’t you just leave?” Aside from lacking empathy, this response proves how little education the person has when it comes to tactics used by perpetrators and abusers. In episodes 7 & 8 Karen Wiseman tells a story of a young girl being trafficked by local gangs and the fears she had about getting away from it, especially as they threatened to harm her family.

It is important for us to acknowledge that April is child abuse prevention & s*xual assault awareness month, but it is also important for us to remember that the fight for these things never ends, even when April does.
You can make a difference. Together, we can end this.
Human beings have the right to life, liberty, personal security; freedom from slavery; freedom from torture and degrading treatment. Have we forgotten this? Why are we not enraged at this epidemic?
If you recognize red flags and suspect someone may be being trafficked, don't hesitate to call this hotline. We must all do our part to end this.

One of the ways that perpetrators abuse their trafficked victims is by not allowing them to talk to anyone without supervision. We must give a voice to those who are unable to use theirs, until the day they can.

With only a trash bag of belongings, where do aged out (foster care) youth go? Who is looking for them? As young adults, why are they so easily preyed upon? Who’s looking out for this group? Cortney Jones, Founder & Executive Director of Change 1, a community-based organization that collaborates with local agencies and individuals dedicated to foster care alumni success, shares the realities this forgotten age group faces and how we can prevent them from being trafficked in Episode 4.

In episode 3 we talk about identifying predators and break down the human trafficking process to help people understand how it works and what to watch for.
Surprisingly, a victim may not have any visible signs they are being trafficked. There will be nothing you can see near or far even if you are trained in this field. Knowing the general signs is a great start, but in order to eradicate this plague, we must also pay attention to those we know or interact with daily, weekly and monthly. Human trafficking is complex and closer to us than we think.
