Contrived’s Addicted to Sadness Album Release Party at The Seahorse Tavern – A Night of Nostalgia and New Beginnings 🎶
Friday, September 27, 2024, was a night to remember at Halifax’s Seahorse Tavern, as Contrived made their long-awaited return with the release of their first new album in 16 years, Addicted to Sadness. The band treated the crowd to a perfect blend of tracks from the new album and old favorites from their back catalog, kicking things off with Starshine from their 2004 EP of the same name. From there, they transitioned into the new with Flash Forward and Gemini from Addicted to Sadness, before diving into Celebrate from their last album, Blank, Blank, Blank (2008).
The set continued with a mix of Addicted to Sadness and Blank, Blank, Blank favorites, including Half of It, Jealousy, Angels Rioting Against The Nothing, and Firing Square. Fans were then treated to a trip back in time with Surrounded by Genius from 2005’s Dead Air Verbatim and Get to Your Stations from 2002’s Pursuit of Plots, covering a wide selection of songs spanning their entire discography.
In a playful moment, Loel Campbell stepped out from behind the drums to take on vocals for a song while Connor Booth from PostFun took over on the drum kit, adding a fun twist to the performance. The band then added Not A Goodbye to the setlist before making a quick exit from the stage. Of course, the raucous crowd wasn’t done, and after chants for more, the band returned for a two-song encore featuring fan favorites Concentric and South Dakota, leaving longtime fans satisfied with a taste of the old greats and excitement for the new.
What made this night even more special—beyond the album release—were the incredible additions to the evening's lineup. With Mike Bigelow absent, Brian Borcherdt (Burnt Black/Dusted) filled in on bass, while Ryan MacDonald (Alert the Medic) added extra layers of vocals, guitar, and keyboards. Contrived members Loel Campbell (drums), Mike MacNei
