As Boyz II Men said, "We've Come to the End of Road"

The final episode of The Hive features the fabulous Elizabeth Francolini, an inspirational whirlwind, operating in the world of Conservation Psychology. The thread of people has run all of the way through the podcast and this is a good note to end on, looking at behaviour change and a greater use of these concepts throughout Conservation work.

Mollie and I have been recording this podcast since Autumn 2020, I can't believe that either of us imagined we'd get to speak to so many great guests and from across the world. Thank you to all of you and not least Lizzie, who rounds up our run of 8 episodes.

We hope you've had fun listening, and found it useful!

Happy Friday Everyone!

The penultimate Episode of The Hive has arrived!

Episode 7 takes a look at some of the behaviours we have probably all been seeing across nature reserves for years, only to increase during the easing of lockdowns.

We spoke to Erik Kramer-Webb in the Joshua Tree National Park to discover how similar these issues are to what has been seen in America. Lucy McRobert (author of 365 Days Wild) to give us her insights into how this was handled from a marketing point of view, and how we can use more effective messaging as part of the toolkit to help reduce it and help us in our efforts to conserve wildlife

"If you do not trigger emotions in your story, you will never change behaviours. You need emotions in your stories so people remember them and then feel motivated to act on them... People very rarely act on hearing facts alone".

Author of 365 Days Wild, Lucy McRobert challenges us to consider what resonates with our audience. When creating interpretation, or posting on social media about the environment, how many of us jump to talking about % decrease, or long-term declines. Lucy suggests that there is another way to tell these stories, which invoke emotions and a behavioural response. All part of an absolute gem of an episode of The Hive (aren't they all!)

Sammy Brisdon makes a great point about people wanting to protect something, like an open space, or nature - if they use it and/or enjoy it in some way.

An easy to understand concept, so how do we execute this? For me it's about making environmental education & engagement accessible and inclusive - as well as ensuring access to natural spaces giving us a chance to reflect on the importance of the outdoors to our physical & mental health, but how the health of the ecosystems around us are critical to our future as a species.

Listen to Sammy and our other guest speakers talk about environmental engagement, in the latest episode of The Hive Podcast;

When does volunteering to gain experience, become exploitation?

For Episode Two of The Hive, we spoke to Jessie Panazzolo (she/her) about the experiences that led to her writing her page turner of an autobiography; How to Conserve Conservationists.

Jessie also founded the online community; Lonely Conservationists, and she quickly discovered that her own experiences were by no means unique.

Entry level roles in Conservation quite often require some form of experience, usually gained in a voluntary capacity, should voluntary work be an expectation for an entry-level role in any industry? What impact could this be having?

Professor Richard Stafford feels that a College education perfectly suits those who want to get a hands-on job in Conservation, and that degrees are the step to take for those interested in the science behind it.

As College graduates ourselves (prior to undertaking a degree), we completely agree with this! 🐝

The first episode of The Hive podcast will look at some of the routes into a career in Conservation. Leading up to this, we have some guest blogs, from students giving their own experiences and perspectives, which might help others in making the best choice for them.

First up is Janey Sellars who went the route of a diploma, undergraduate degree and now studying Marine Biology at postgraduate level at the University of Exeter. Alongside Janey is Gwyneth Mitchell, who left Sparsholt College Hampshire, initially for a course at a bigger University, before deciding to move back to Sparsholt College, preferring the more rural campus and small class sizes.

We have more guest blogs, from students who have chosen different routes, throughout this week. Thank you to all of our guest bloggers - it's been really interesting to read about your different journeys.
