Czech references can be found all around the world. This video shows you for example unpacking of fukubukuro (Japanese New Year's Lucky Bag) from Japanese tea brand Karel Čapek. The owner named his brand after the Czech author because he really enjoyed his illustrations. You will learn about the popular snacks for the New Year's Eve and also about the traditions such as what you should or shouldn't eat, so that the next year is good. And I will also mention some lucky charms that are popular around this time in the Czech Republic.

Wishing you a lovely year's end celebration and all the best for the next year! P. F. 2021! And don't forget "Jak na Nový rok, tak po celý rok!" :-) https://youtu.be/N9bbvTvPRvE

Ahoj! Hello! Today it will be a slightly different episode - the advent season is here and if you are living in the Czech Republic or if you are interested in Czech culture, you should know about the traditions that are usually taking place in the time of 4 weeks (Sundays) before Christmas.

In today's episode I'll be talking about the Christmas Wrath, st. Nicholas, Christmas markets, Czech Christmas cookies, Peace Light of Bethlehem and other tiny peaces of Czech culture that are related to the pre-Christmas time.

It was obviously not that easy to get the illustration pictures for these in the current situation but thanks to the help of my friends (special thanks goes to Lucka, Hanka and Jirka :-)), I was able to get together photos from Czechia, Germany and Austria.

I hope that you will enjoy the podcast!

Isabell Mayrhofer decided early on that she would like to see the world. So far she has lived abroad for nearly 15 years now (USA, Germany, United Kingdom, Singapore, France). She is currently living in Prague and working for a Start-up Live Penalty which focuses on the development of a mobile game combining the real and the virtual world of football.

Previously she has been working for another Czech Start-up (Automobilist), so you can take a peek inside this booming Prague scene.

Before her Czech Start-up career, she has been working in the film industry in Hollywood, so you can look forward to stories from this part of the world. And of course, we talked also about the similarities between the Czech and the Austrian culture (especially when it comes to food :-)).

Richard Savage is an English lecturer, musician, and voice artist, who has been living in the Czech Republic for almost 20 years.

I couldn't resist to ask him some crucial Czech questions like:

What did he know about Czechia before moving here?
Was he afraid to move to a post-communistic country?
How does he handle black Czech humor?
What does he think about Czech traditions?
What about Jára Cimrman?

And some more. And Richard was kind to answer them all :-D

03/04/2020

The state of emergency because of the coronavirus is continuing and we can see a bit of light at the end of the tunnel. The number of new cases finally slowed down on Thursday. More than 4 500 Czechs returned home in March 2020 thanks to the help of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. And Czech people are creating many crowdfunding events in a way that also ordinary citizens can help. I am mentioning one of the events - Czech Philharmony concert with face masks and also the project "Zachraň pivo" - "Save the beer" - where even you can participate and buy a beer from a local brewery and save it from expiration!

25/03/2020

Hello! ✌️🇨🇿As expats in Czechia are from all around the world, I am sure that you are also monitoring the current coronavirus situation in your homeland. There are many better channels that can teach you about proper washing hands, wearing face masks and so on. But I was thinking that maybe we can share those tiny things from daily life that we see in our countries and consider them useful and maybe transferable to other countries.
Here are tips from myself (I am in Germany but I am also checking Czech news):
1. Physical lines on the floor in shops showing the proper social distance between customers waiting for the payment.
2. Also might come to consideration in front of the shop (for example using chalk) in the time of restriction of the number of people shopping at the same time.
3. Usage of self-service counters for payments, when possible.
4. Cashless payments - ideally via phone (then you are confirming the payment via Face ID, fingerprint or inputting the PIN on your cell phone and you are not touching the shop's terminal).
5. When you are ordering delivery online, also tip the delivery person via online payment.
6. If you have relatives who don't have yet a smartphone, consider getting them one. If they are living with another family member, they can explain to them how videocall works and it might be useful in the future for your communication.
7. Don't forget about the people in need. For example, there are people in need selling a magazine "Nový prostor" on the streets in Czechia but these days it is not possible anymore. The organization made it possible to buy it online as PDF. It might be an inspiration for other charities.
8. The mentioned Czech words: "Rouškomat" and "Musíme si pomáhat".
Thanks for listening and looking forward to tips from your country!

Another Czech news podcast is here! Unfortunately, we joined a list of countries where someone infected with coronavirus died. The patient was 95 years old. On the other hand the number of recovered persons grown to 6. Also, the creator of the hoax, which has been spreading via social networks, was identified. And there is a possibility of new shopping rules in Czechia. The government is expected to discuss it today. As the current rule (shopping from 7 till 9 AM exclusively for elderly people) had an effect on people coming from night shifts (for example people working in hospitals) who weren't able to shop during these morning hours.

Another podcast with information from Czechia is here. We have 4th recovered person, yay! Also, there is a new rule for people using trams in Prague - don't enter the tram via the first doors. The point is that the driver shall have as little contact with passengers as possible. So please also do so in the case of other public transportation all around CZ. There have arrived in new medical supplies from China. The crisis management team is expecting 3 planes weekly arriving with more of those within the next 6 weeks. People stopped the hoarding shopping but unfortunately afterward there has been a hoax roaming through Czech social networks. The prime minister said that it is fake news and police are looking for a person who created it. In addition, I am talking about the difference between the Czech Republic and Germany and why people are discussing the possibility of a ban on daily commuting for Czech people working in Germany in Austria. And the word of the day is "jaro". Stay safe and healthy!
