Old Gator Games I started Old Gator Games as a vehicle for producing original RPG adventure concepts with a classic

"Playing D&D does not require more than one person having a single set of rules. And even then, it need not be the most current set of rules. The game does not require players to use WotC created or licensed accessories… or even any accessories at all. Notebook paper and unbranded dice purchased from an FLGS or online vendor will do. There is no need to constantly purchase rule updates, game accessories, or game miniatures, especially not ones licensed by WotC."

"...some creators openly boast that they design games not for gamers but for their own personal satisfaction and the accolades of their peers. Now think about that. These high fellows are the nobility, others the peasants. How droll a conceit, that. Can there be any doubt then that the products resulting from persons with such an attitude are likely to speak down to, insult or otherwise, slight, and secretly sneer at the consumer?" ~ Gary Gygax, Dragon Magazine, No. 268 (FEB 2000).

I think that WotC and Hasbro have to replace their executives with Nerds, geeks and worse. D&D Beyond

If you are tired of the same old "A is for Apple" tripe, you need to check out this unconventional, but unashamedly bad ass alphabet book filled with gritty monster illustrations by my man Phil Stone Art.

Only a handful of hours left to participate.

A sardonic little book about MONSTERS and the alphabet and MONSTERS

It never fails - after every character death.

Do your players get so invested into their characters that they feel genuine grief when they die?

It is a common problem, but it means you're building a realistic and collaborative world your players are immersed in.

There has long been an argument that players who are new to Dungeons and Dragons and those "old school" gamers who eschew any version newer than AD&D are...

GDZ is a great show. Tune in for an insider look at the TTRPG industry.

This was a lot of fun (and even a little cathartic) and I hope you have a chance to check it out.

Join John Larson, Tactical DM of Old Gator Games as he pulls the trigger on his debut TTRPG adventure, Blood of the Brood Mother - an intermediate adventure for 5-7 characters level 6-9.

Deep in an ancient jungle, a group of lumberjacks have gone missing and the flow of precious wood and exotic flora from the region has dried up. Without the lumber trade, the remote port town of Gomba will certainly fail, but a worse fate awaits the settlement and its beleaguered inhabitants – an ancient evil is stirring in the jungle.

During the launch you'll hear from guests including Levi Combs, James Shields, and Lexi Spencer along with other fellow indie publishers and contributing illustrators.

Sometimes we just need a little nudge to get us going in the right direction.⁣

I have recently started following and enjoy the collaborative vibe of the group.⁣

In order to focus my efforts this week, I have composed a (clockwise from top left):⁣

1. from TSR when I was trying to first break into writing for the industry (1990).⁣

2. Slick illustration by .evermoor of a dark harpy for my "Harpy Scorned."⁣

3. Bee keeper mural at the .⁣

4. Mean mugging .⁣

5. Cover art for In Bocca al Lupo by . This is one of the most "complete" albums I have ever heard.⁣

Can anyone guess the direction my fiction will go this week..? What path will the adventure take..? What perils lurk in the shadows..? What treasure awaits the victors..?⁣

The gaming hobby is a lot different than it was in the days when Gygax and Arneson were writing. It is more inclusive, more accessible and more diverse. This description applies to the players, to the artists, and to the writers.

This is why it is so important to recognize creators who are breaking the mold and challenging the "old guard" to grow with the times.

If you haven't had a chance to check out Tina Anderson's fiction, you should. Whether it is in short story or graphic novel format, her creative works should inspire TTRPG writers and publishers to keep up. (Happy Birthday )

It is important to give strong, female characters a starring role in your campaign setting. Erin Grey was exactly that in the Buck Rogers movie and series and as such, she paved the road for other sci-fi actors like Sigourney Weaver, Kate Mulgrew, and Zoe Saldana to take their respective spotlights.

Who is she in your adventure?

Alan Napier is best known for playing Alfred to Adam West's Batman, but he was quite a prolific actor.

Any good adveture path is filled with critically important who drive the story from the sidelines. These are our nonplayer characters and they deserve our undivided attention, but it is ok to model them after actors or real-life personalities. Not only does this save you time in the creation process, but also allows your players to have an instant connection with the NPC because they are already familiar with who you are introducing them to.

Where do you see Alan Napier in YOUR adventures..?

Evolved from the gothic horror of the previous century, tropes of pulp horror and grindhouse action are the common threads of many TTRPG adventure paths (yes, I am talking about you ).

Eric Frank Russell wrote humorous and biting fiction and was considered one of the more prolific explorers of alternative futures.

While not specifically tied to the TTRPG hobby, there is no doubt Robert Duvall plays the types of characters we want to run in our own games.

The stoic bad ass, LTC Kilgore is the epitome of calm, cool and collected.

When I am out and about, I am always looking to capture the essence of unique landscapes and natural elements in order to feed my creative needs.

The juxtaposition of light and dark acts as a descriptive ambush in the story telling process and can be used to catch your readers of guard.

Here, a flower carpeted, seaside meadow leads innocently to the lair of a dark and sinister menace. As ocean mists creep and crawl along the verge, the creature stirs and seeks sustenance. Where will you run to hide? To survive?

Fairy tales are creative pillars which have served tirelessly to prop up the fantasy role playing game genre. The most influential collectors, compilers, and publishers of European folklore are Jacob (and Wilhelm) Grimm.

Practice run at baking Yorkshire pudding. I want to make sure I have it down before Christmas.

Not only do they look and taste good, but the process of making them reminded me details are important when creating a scene.

Whether it is a story told around the campfire, a piece of fantasy fiction, or an adventure path for your favorite tabletop RPG, those who consume your creative works are hungry for thoughtful descriptions. It isn't enough to walk into a tavern. You need to add vivid, sensory details to set the stage for what is about to unfold...

So pay attention to smells and tastes; textures and visual stimulation when creating your scenes and use your personal experiences as design templates for your fantasy creations.

Even when the sky is gray and weather mutes fall colors, there is something mesmerizing about reflections on still water.

But what is quietly lurking in the depths? Does it slumber or simply wait for prey?
