When do you get that ‘new year’ feeling?

January is usually considered the “fresh start” month due to it being the start of a new year. People make resolutions, start fitness regimes & diets and often clear out clutter, especially after getting new things at Christmas.

For me, however, I get this feeling in the Autumn.

After the long Summer holidays, I am excited to get stuck into new projects at work and at home. Maybe it’s the “back to school” feeling that carried on into adulthood? Do you get this feeling too?

I love co-working sessions 🙌

Recently I have been joining in with online co-working sessions on courses I am doing alongside my own business. They are in the “day” part of my shift and alter the structure of my week as they are at set times, and I am really enjoying them.

It’s lovely to have company during the day, as it can be lonely working from home, despite my faithful four legged companion.

I also find that I am often inspired and most definitely motivated by talking to others during the sessions. I’m not sure if it’s because everyone is so focused (after the initial chat at the beginning) or if it’s a desire to prove I’ve done something in the set time, but I am much more productive too.

What is your favourite thing about where you work?

Is it the view from your desk? Do you have a brilliant bakery just around the corner? Is it your lovely co-workers? Perhaps it’s your commute - a nice walk through some greenery?

Mine is that when I have a break, I can have cuddles with Bear 🐾 He isn’t great at problem solving, but he gets me out in the fresh air and away from my desk for 10 minutes. He is also very happy to help share my lunch! He really is a brilliant colleague 🤣

For the past few weeks I’ve been helping my clients get ready for summer 🌞

It started with an email to let them know when I will be away and when I will be working over the summer break. This then prompted them to book me for projects before the end of the month. 🙌

I was really honest about when I would be able to work and how they can reach me with anything urgent. And it’s made me feel a lot more prepared for the summer ahead.

Summer is often seen as a time when businesses close, but in actual fact most of us are still working away, but our capacity is just a little different. We might be taking time off for a holiday or visiting family/friends, or juggling childcare, but work is still very much a part of our summer.

How is your summer looking? Are you packed and ready to jet off somewhere, or is it business as usual with the potential of some nicer lunch breaks in the sun (here’s hoping!)? Let me know 😊

Be honest. Can anything be outsourced in your business?

Is there anything that you would feel happy to let someone else do for you, so you can have more time to do the things you really enjoy in your business?

Do you need ongoing support with social media (scheduling posts, hashtag research, creating captions etc.)? Or do you have ideas but you can’t get to grips with the design. Is Canva your nemesis?

Are you passionate about your business until it comes to promoting it and then you get imposter syndrome and want to hide?

Or do you need support for just a few months? Are we coming up to your busiest time of the year and having someone else tackle your content would free you up to do all the other things you need/want to do?

In an office environment, you will often chat about ideas without realising it. Perhaps at lunchtime or when you are making a drink, or picking something up from the printer etc.

These small unintentional conversations can make a big difference and it’s often why working in an office, despite the usually noisy environment, can be so productive.

I didn't used to set goals regularly at all, but since joining The Best 90 Days Ever by Hannah Isted and Your Brand Blueprint by Fliss Lee, I now set goals every quarter.

Here are mine for Q3 and I've tried to make them a bit lighter (and hopefully achievable) for the summer ☀

When you are wearing all the hats in your own business, it can be a struggle to stay positive 24-7.

And you don’t need to.

Owning your own business is fantastic, but it’s also really hard work and because we are our own bosses, it’s often us who piles the pressure on ourselves until the overwhelm takes over.

So this is a sign to pause for a moment, breathe, and be kind to yourself.

Oh, and make a brew - you deserve one, and eat a biscuit…you always need a biscuit 🧡

I truly believe that who you surround yourself in business with is so important.

Whether it’s the people you pay, the people who pay you, or the people who cheerlead you from the side lines, the impact the right people have on your life (and your business) is incredible.

Here’s just 3 of mine:

1. Sally, my first ever (and still current!) client. 💜 Sally is a huge inspiration to me, and gave me the chance to grow in a nurtured and supportive environment, and with encouragement my confidence grew 🙌

2. My mum, who was the one who suggested I apply to work with Sally in the first place – a pivotal moment in my career.

3. And my son, who is my “why”. I want him to be able to do whatever he wants to in life and feel he can follow his dreams. By dreaming myself and pushing those dreams into a reality, I want to show him that anything is possible.

This is why I specialise in working with small businesses who are compassionate, caring, and kind – because they understand the importance and the value of building out the right team.

My son is my “why”.

He is the ultimate little dude and I defy anyone to not be cheered by his cheeky (and currently rather toothless) grin!

I want him to be able to do whatever he wants to in life and feel he can follow his dreams. By dreaming myself and pushing those dreams into a reality, I want to show him that anything is possible.

Why do you do what you do?

Initially, I didn’t choose to be a small business owner myself - it came out of a need to be self-employed due to a change in personal circumstances.

I suddenly became a single mum & it changed how I needed to work but on the plus side, I got to choose what to do next! And I LOVE what I do now 😊

Today I’m sharing a personal challenge 🧡

I love writing letters, by hand, using an ink pen (of which I have many!)

This month I have challenged myself to send at least 15 letters/cards to friends, family and anyone else who would like one.

My inspiration has come from the wonderful Dinah and the fabulous Jenny 💌

My aim is to share my love of letter writing, inspire my son to write letters, bring others joy with some happy post and encourage you to do it too 🙌🏼

You won't regret it - Hannah is a genius 💡

You can do one of Hannah's marketing tasks for your business in the time it takes for you to brew a good cuppa.

Is there anything better than a proper brew? Especially on a day like today - International Tea Day 🧡

I like to take my time when I make a cup tea. I make it with loose leaves in a teapot whenever I can. Not only does it taste better (in my opinion) but I like the process and often use the waiting time to reflect on things.

I do this with work too. I’ll create an image or write some content, then I’ll move onto something else for a bit (or go and make a cup of tea!) and then come back to it.

Sometimes you need a fresh look at something, or more ideas can arrive.

Yesterday was "back to school" for our household but I took the day slowly (apart from a Morrison's shop!). So today is my official "back to work" day, although I find being self-employed means I am always checking emails at some point during the day/evening.

Perhaps today is my "back to some sort of routine day" instead?

Do you find it hard to get back into a routine after the school holidays, or any sort of holiday? Or are you super focused?

I LOVE listening to podcasts, especially when it feels like the host or hosts could be sat around my kitchen table, talking to me over a cuppa and a biscuit. And this pair are no exception!

RE: The Podcast is hosted by Eleanor Mollie and Rachel Emma Waring - Creative Marketing Consultant and it's fantastic! They talk about all sorts of things regarding small businesses, always giving great tips & advice and introducing you to other wonderful people as their guests.
They also have a fantastic library of episodes for you to binge on (& I have!).

What's one thing you would like to do better in your business this year?

I'd like to be more visible.

As a social media manager, I am on socials a lot, but for my clients, not myself.

This year I want to show my business some love and attention by posting more regularly, engaging with my community and having some fun with my content!

So here is to 2024* and showing up for myself!

*Slight delay in showing up before now due to illness, but February is the new January right? 😉

Back in June, I did something I’ve been longing to do for years.

I had wanted to have “my colours done” for a long time, as I love ALL colours, but I knew not all colours loved me! 😂 And when I discovered Anna (Anna Spreckley Style), I knew she was the lady I needed to see.

Anna is fantastic at what she does. Not only do I now know which colours suit me and make me feel my most fabulous. I also left the appointment feeling so much more confident in myself. Thank you Anna - you are an absolute diamond ✨

It also sparked a redesign for my logo, as the colours I used previously didn’t feel quite right anymore. They didn’t represent me.

So out came the colour swatch book Anna had given me and out came my Swatchos cards. I played around with matching up the colours until I found the ones I knew were right.

Now have a wardrobe that boosts my confidence and my brand represents me and my colours too. 🙌

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Is it when you walk to work? Is it listening to music or your favourite podcast?

I’ve been taking part in a fantastic creativity membership called “The Curious Magpie” by the fabulous Océane from Papergraphie 🥰

One of the prompts has been to daydream and let your thoughts wander. I’ve really enjoyed this and rather than listening to music on my daily morning Bear walks (my dog is called Bear!), I've been listening to my surroundings and have taken inspiration from them.

When was the last time you daydreamed? I thoroughly recommend adding this into your weekly routine, when it is safe to do so...don't daydream and drive!

C O U R A G E 🦁 This is my word of 2024. At the beginning of the year I had a few other words I was trying out and I didn’t settle on this one until mid February. Sometimes you need to try something on first don’t you. I’ve chosen this word to encourage me to be bold, be bright, be vibrant (last year’s word which I loved).
