The Wugan Collective was born yesterday - an intentional community of poetry and spoken word. We gathered yesterday to respond in poetry to the Sanism issue, seeking to explore healing encounters from a felt, embodied, connected perspective: We wanted to explore the bordertown of "us", rather than the separate perspectives of "you" and "me".
Ultimately there will be a poetry audiobook released for sale, with all the proceeds going to keeping the Activist Practitioner afloat.
Until then, we will release poems for free, with you as listener becoming an outsider witness to our stories of felt encounters with Sanism.
"Wugan" means "raven" in Darug. We met on Gadigal land, accompanied by ravens on the rooftops and trees outside the window. Listen for them in the poems.

We are seeking expressions of interest from people with lived experience for submissions on the topic of Sanism/Mentalism.

Sanism/Mentalism encompasses the oppression and discrimination of people with a lived experience of mental distress.

To express your interest in contributing to this edition please send a short paragraph about your idea and a short bio and then we can get in touch about next steps toward publication.

For example you might want to volunteer to interview someone or be interviewed yourself, pitch a practice piece about work you are doing, a theory piece about ideas you want to spread, a piece to enable representation of diverse community voices, thoughts about ideas that changed you, a poem or art work, etc.

We invite people from diverse and/or marginalised backgrounds to submit to this magazine. We would also like to create opportunities for authors to develop their work through mentorship or co-writing practices.

Please send your EOI's to [email protected]. Please see the website for further submission information, contact details and examples of past publications.
EOI's are due by 14 July, completed pieces are due beginning of October.

Meet Ruth Wells, our mentoring and peer review coordinator!

Ruth is an ardent feminist. She sees feminism as a path to challenging many forms of marginalisation and likes jumping up and down about these kinds of things. When she is not jumping up and down, she thinks maybe it’s a good idea to sit and think about how whiteness and privilege have shaped her life, and listen to others.

She is a gender q***r fem human who loves playing music. She is also a psychologist and research fellow in the School of Psychiatry at UNSW, where she is always learning through community based participatory action research with refugee communities. Her current projects include exploring embodied experiences of disability in Syrian and Iraqi refugee communities in Sydney from a lived experience perspective through arts based research; a group based online mentoring program to support Syrian refugee community psychosocial workers in Turkey; developing an online group intervention to promote inclusion in physical activity for Syrian refugees in Turkey; understanding how gender impacts on access to social inclusion and physical activity in Rohingya refugee communities in Bangladesh.

She has a passion for standing up for the rights and health of displaced psychosocial staff and volunteers working within their own refugee communities.
