An Evanston Minute: Unplug Illinois Day

Saturday was Unplug Illinois Day across Evanston. Hundreds of residents flocked to natural sites in the city—to fish at Lovelace Park, bird walk at the Clark Street Beach Sanctuary and Perkins Woods, scavenge the dunes at the Lighthouse Beach, and walk through the Ladd Arboretum and Harbert Park. “I wanted to come outdoors and get away from the computer,” said Bryan Kao (wearing a backpack), who brought his son Lane on his first fishing trip.

The National Weather Service issued an Air Quality Alert for Evanston on Sunday.

The city says a similar alert is expected for Monday.

Smoke from wildfires in Canada has moved into the region - pushing the Air Quality Index over 150 and into the unhealthy or worse categories.

As a result, the Evanston Police Department's Community Barbecue has been postponed with a new date to be announced.

The city started disbursing reparations payments to locals in 2022, in the form of vouchers for housing, and has since expanded them to include cash.

As talk of reparations ripples through the federal and local governments nationwide, Evanston, Ill., has become the first city in the United States to put money in the hands of Black residents affected by years of discrimination.

EVANSTON, IL: Award-Winning Songwriter Edie Carey @ Evanston Garden Concert

Join award-winning songwriter Edie Carey for an evening of moving songs and hilarious stories in beautiful Evanston, IL.

“Edie Carey’s [The Veil] is a direct hit to the solar plexus…jaw-dropping lyricism…” – The Independent

Colorado-based singer-songwriter Edie Carey is known for her unmistakable, soulful voice, her intelligent, heart-grabbing songs, but perhaps most especially for her warm, engaging presence on - and off - stage. As much a part of her show as the music itself, Edie's wry humor makes audiences feel as though they have just spent an evening with a very close friend.

With dozens of movie scores and over 500 recording credits to his name across Jazz, R&B, and Opera, Marcus’ resume speaks for itself, and as a UNESCO Artist for Peace and changemaker, his work on social justice projects continues to be inspiring.

And as we look toward the future and the return of live events, Marcus is anticipating the return of Black Movie Music at the Hollywood Bowl, the fourth installment of the successful series (which he co-created, co-produces, arranges, and musical directs) that catalogs the rich history of music in Black film.

Last year we hosted a super successful Dance Party for Reproductive Rights, where we not only earned a lot of money for Planned Parenthood, but had a blast doing it! So this year, we're hosting another Old School Vinyl Dance Party, again DJ'd by the amazing vinyl spinners from Squeezebox Books and Music, only this year our beneficiary will be our very own Evanston Animal Shelter! Half of ticket proceeds will go directly to EAS, and there will be raffle prizes you can bid on at the party, so bring your wallets and dig deep for the doggies (and cats)!

The Wine Goddess will be selling wine, beer, and frosé, and La Principal will be selling beer and Margaritas, and their kitchen will be open throughout the party if you boogie up an appetite.
