OPINION | Nuclear Power? Not Now.

On May 23, presumptive president Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. told the media that he discussed the possibility of reviving the mothballed Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) with the Ambassador of South Korea Kim Inchul. “We will study their recommendations and findings,” Marcos said.

However, Filipinos must understand: this revival can be risky due to its location, estimated cost, outdated structure and the risks of handling nuclear waste.

NEWS | Protests vs COMELEC continues

On May 10, a day after the elections, protesters rallied at the headquarters of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) in Intramuros, Manila after various reports of vote-counting machines (VCMs) failing occurred in different parts of the country during the election day.

According to COMELEC Commissioner George Garcia, there were 1,800 VCMs that malfunctioned, most of which had issues with the SD card. However, according to Garcia, the issues have already been “resolved.”

NEWS FEATURE | Long Overdue: Continuing Financial Benefits For Healthcare Workers Under a Pandemic

The COVID-19 outbreak exposed a lot of health workers’ sacrifices. These medical workers on the frontlines of keeping COVID-19 cases under control, dubbed as "heroes in scrubs," had been exhausted and overwhelmed by their often 24-hour work schedules. If these problems are not addressed, the profession may face a massive exodus in the near future.

Despite eased restrictions in several areas, the Department of Health (DOH) said that COVID-19 is not yet endemic in the country. According to Health Undersecretary Ma. Rosario Vergeire, the country is still transitioning to the new normal. Hence, as the country continues to fight waves of COVID-19 infections, accessibility and affordability of medical services must be resolved.

NEWS | PPCRV still looking for additional volunteers

The Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) said it is still looking for more encoders for the unofficial parallel count of the May 9 election returns.

PPCRV national chairperson Myla Villanueva made the call prior to the elections even as she said the organization is already in its efforts to surveil the conduct of the polls at the PPCRV command center at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Quadricentennial Pavilion.

Villanueva said 150 volunteers are needed everyday from May 9 to 15 to “help encode election returns” and monitor election results for the unofficial parallel count.

NEWS | COMELEC releases task force against vote-buying incidents days before campaign ends

On March 22, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) released a statement that will create a separate task force handling vote-buying matters. A few days before the campaign period officially ends, on April 29, 2022, the COMELEC launched the page Task force Kontra Bigay (anti-vote-buying).

Article 22 Sec. 261 of the COMELEC code or the Prohibited Acts of the Omnibus Election Code listed vote-buying and vote-selling, or any similar act, as prohibited. NEWS FEATURE | Two years of COVID-19: New strains of the virus, an old strain of human suffering

Over two years after the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, people around the world have been living under the “new normal.” New COVID-19 variants and subvariants have also been emerging. The war on COVID-19 is not yet over, and so are the preexisting struggles of Filipinos even before the virus came into existence.

The Department of Science and Technology-National Academy of Science and Technology (DoST-NAST) studied the economy of the Philippines by analyzing its economic impact, employment, sector size, connectivity, and income multiplier using mathematical models, according to the report of the Manila Bulletin in a webinar organized by the mentioned government agency. The study showed the manufacturing industry as one of the topmost affected sectors in the country during the pandemic.

Basic and essential commodities and services have constantly become more expensive because of the high oil prices in the Philippines, adversely affecting many small business owners to adjust their lifestyles and budgets.

Such is the case of Aling Gaga, 46, and her husband Mang Yoyoy, 48, who are food stall vendors from Quezon City. After two years of running their calamari business, the couple has only started to recover from their financial losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, another looming challenge threatens them—grappling with surges in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices.

NEWS| Cordilleran groups conduct freedom of expression webinar

In celebration of World Press Freedom Day, Cordilleran organizations conducted a webinar entitled, “Speaking Truth to Power in the Time of Tyranny: An Online Forum on the Siege on Freedom of Expression” held on May 3, 2022 via Zoom and Facebook Live.

A creative video presentation on women human rights defenders by Luchie Maranan, vice-chairperson for external affairs of Dap-ayan ti Kultura iti Cordillera, was featured in the event.

In the video, women human rights defenders said that to be a woman in these times meant fighting against tyranny and impunity. It also meant being fearless for the people.

“There are millions like us and we are breaking free in the streets, in the front lines, in workplaces, in fields, and in places they (tyrants) cannot imagine we can be,” said Maranan in the video.

FEATURE | My Beloved: A Martial Law Love Story

While he was in prison during martial law, Jose Camus wrote a poem for his wife, Beatrice, as he “hopes that someday, they’ll be back again.”

As the song goes, “I fell in love with the same woman three times.” These are lyrics from a song based on Ninoy Aquino’s poem for Corazon Aquino while he was in prison. My grandparents have a similar story.
