So, there was a plan, and then...
At the beginning of March this year, like so many people, I was looking forward to a lot of things. March is full of birthdays in my family, including my own, and with some roots stretching back to Ireland, St. Patrick's is also important to me. As we all know now, those celebrations changed. In the middle of a work day, everyone in my office was told to head home and work from there until further notice. We have all been learning to live our lives at a distance from each other.
This has been hard on friendships, relationships, families, and communities. I'm lucky not to be sick, not to be on the front lines of this pandemic. I'm lucky to have work and a home and support from wonderful people. Still, theater, something I love, was stopped in it's tracks, and has been struggling to continue ever since.
I've been involved in performance for as long as I can remember. Community theater has given me so much, and the thought of it ending was deeply painful. So I determined that I needed to do something. I talked with friends and colleagues about it, and what emerged was this, The Radio Drama Society of Montreal. Maybe we can't look like we're together, but we can sound like we're together. If the audience can't come to the theater, then theater must go to the audience.
I'd wanted to produce Richard III for some time now, as a way of examining how people can fall prey to, and even become fervent followers of unscrupulous leaders. A play became a podcast, and five acts became five episodes. The plan was to release it before the end of October, as all of you who've heard our trailer will know. 2020, it seems, has a way of making plans change.
The new date for the release of Act 1 is set for December 20th. We're very much looking forward to sharing it with you.
Stay tuned, folks, we're nearly there.
