Global Groove on WOMR Traveling the globe in search of the groove. https://linktr.ee/globalgroove From dancing to Mbalax in Senegalese beer gardens, adventures continued.

your host DJ Pablo fell in love with the sounds of Africa while serving in the Peace Corps in Senegal way back in the early 1980s. Boating up the Boca Manu in the Amazon, stranding his zodiac at the Praia carnivale on the Cape Verdean island of Santiago, wandering the barren karst landscape of the Burren, feasting on fried grasshoppers in Oaxaca, hitchhiking back and forth to Quebec and selling Vi

etnamese Goi Cuon at the Cambridge River Fest before ultimately washing ashore in Wellfleet on Cape Cod. From all this wandering he developed a far ranging taste in music which he shares with listeners on the Global Groove: on any given show you’ll hear Jungle Cumbia from 1970s Peru, Malian desert blues, Garifuna tunes from Belize, Moroccan trance, Congolese Soukous, Cape Verdean Morna and all kinds of other groovy music.

This beautiful painting is by Connecticut artist Nora Hillman (and high school friend) and I just love her work and think it fits so well with the vibe of the music I play.

The Brazilian Invasion. Before the British Invasion, before the hippies, there was a new wave of cool originating in Brazil and washing across North America and the world. At its core is the rhythm of Samba, the batucada. Expressed on the guitar. Smooth music to cool you off on even the hottest summer evening. The Bossa Nova. New Wave. This week on the Global Groove let’s ride that wave. Global Groove full moon Bossa Nova edition. 5pm Friday.

Early Father’s Day tribute this Friday night June 7 at 5pm Eastern. “Larry Greenspan’s HiFi” will feature the music my dad played in our living room in North Massapequa back in my formative years in the 1960s. Sergio Mendes, Stan Getz, Miriam Makeba and Harry Belafonte. Babatunde and Yma Sumac. My mom putting out baked stuff clams and cream cheese wrapped in salami, dad mixing up a pitcher of daiquiris, and the first record dropping onto the turntable signaling the start of the cocktail party. I went to bed dreaming about the model on the cover of “Whipped Cream and Other Delights”

Unlike the ‘Exotica’ craze of the previous decade, this music was not the ersatz global schmaltzy lounge music of Martin Denny and Esquival; this music was genuine and musically complex, helped me make my first real connections with the wider world and spawned a lifelong love of foreign travel and different cultures.

So yes musical explorers, It’s “Music without Borders” this Friday night and every 1st and 3rd Friday 5-7pm eastern time on WOMR.ORG and 92.1 FM Provincetown and 91.3 Orleans. Peace Corps Week commemorates March 1, 1961, the day that President John F. Kennedy established the agency. The annual celebration honors how the Peace Corps fosters connections and contributes to meaningful change – in the United States and around the world.

Tonight I’ll share some music & stories from the West African country of Senegal where I did my Peace Corps service. Also some early Congolese Rumba from Kinshasa because it’s great, and some of my favorite music from Mexico because well, there is some awesome Cumbia music I love and also Sophie & Jake have been living there. All that and TICKET GIVEAWAY. What ever you’re doing from 5 to 7 this evening, make Global Groove your soundtrack.

This Friday night February 16 5pm Cape Cod time is Groove on Outermost Radio. This week it’s the annual Carnivale Road Trip…a musical tour to some musical destinations where the sound of drums get you masked and in your dancing shoes and moving. Then how about celebrating the music of Cote D’Ivoire, after Les Elephants just won the Africa Cup (thats football, or soccer to those this side of the big drink) It may be snowy out here at the tip of the glacial moraine, but we got some warm tunes for cold days.

So The Monkees don’t really fit into the Global Groove genre, but they were part of the soundtrack of my youth and I have collected several fun facts I can share with you. 1. Peter Tork, whose birthday would have been today, lived in Mansfield, Connecticut where I went to college and where his father was economics professor 2. Michael Nesmith, the wool hat guy and actual good musician, well his mother was a secretary who invented WhiteOut and eventually sold it to Gillette for $47.5m and 3. Ok this is the weirdest. Micky Dolenz (still alive) was a child actor in early TV show Circus Boy and here, on this cover of a fanzine, appears to be dressed as a N**i Youth, smiling at the giant pe*****le clown with enormous feet as they sit on bails of straw. Happy Wednesday everyone.

Jake Blount is coming to Wellfleet Preservation Hall on Saturday, March 16 at 7pm!

Jake Blount, a young proponent of traditional music American music, brings an Afro-futuristic sound that digs into the roots of Black and indigenous stringband music.

This concert is presented by Payomet and was curated in collaboration with "DJ Pablo" of Global Grooves radio on WOMR.

Jake Blount speaks ardently about the African roots of the banjo and the subtle, yet profound ways African Americans have shaped and defined the amorphous categories of roots music and Americana. His 2020 album Spider Tales (named one of the year’s best albums by NPR and The New Yorker, earned a perfect 5-star review from The Guardian) highlighted the Black and Indigenous histories of popular American folk tunes, as well as revived songs unjustly forgotten in the whitewashing of the canon

Tickets still available at Payomet.org

Bob Boilen | January 6, 2023Jake Blount has an astonishing imagination. While a concert of folk tunes could simply be a singer and perhaps a fiddle or banjo,...

I am curating two local cape concerts in December that just might help.

In 1892 Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, himself struggling with chronic melancholy, sat down in his rooms in Saint Petersburg and scribbled out a musical score about a little girl named Clara whose wooden nutcracker comes alive as a handsome prince, and thus, The Nutcracker Suite was born. Then in 1959, Billy Strayhorn came to his longtime collaborator Duke Ellington with the idea to adapt the suite for the jazz idiom. The Duke agreed, saying of Tchaikovsky, “That cat was it,” and the Sugar Plum Fairy became Sugar Rum Cherry, a West Indian beauty walking through the cane fields.

In 2023, the Ellington/Strayhorn masterpiece was itself reimagined by the American acoustic string band Mr. Sun. Mr. Sun features David Grisman Quintet alumni fiddler Darol Anger and guitarist Grant Gordy, mandolinist Joe K. Walsh, professor of music at Berklee College of Music, and Scottish bassist Aidan O'Donnell. They bring a seemingly effortless virtuosity to the Ellington/Strayhorn material as they interpret it via their unique vocabulary of jazz, blues, swing, and Dawg music. Mr. Sun brings us heaping portions of much needed warmth and light.

Winters in Scandinavia are even longer and darker than those on Cape Cod, and the people of Sweden use song to get themselves through to spring. It was in these northern boreal forests that a style of hauntingly beautiful music evolved to give comfort in the short days, sung a ca****la by friends and family around blazing fires. Kongero is a group of four women whose voices blend in joyous and profound harmony as they share their arrangements of both traditional and modern Swedish folk music.

Mr. Sun and Kongero are part of the Payomet Global Roots Music Series, curated in collaboration with my Global Groove radio show on WOMR

Hope to see you at either or both shows. They will be cozy.
