According to the UNHCR's most recent numbers, by the end of 2019 at least 79.5 million people around the world had been forced to leave their lands, among which there are 26 million .

This day is celebrated to honor Puthuvayil Narayana Panicker, the Father of India's Library Movement. He initiated libraries in his home state, Kerala, also was behind the cultural movement to advocate reading in the state.

He was born on March 1, 1909, his death anniversary (June 19, 1995) is commemorated as the National Reading Day. You can be surprised to know that he was able to bring practically 6000 libraries during his lifetime.

Kerala's universal literacy rate of 100% can be credited to Panicker. Usually, the state celebrates this day by a week-long series of activities across schools and public institutions. In the present situation, the P.N. Panicker Foundation has come up with online reading activities. Find it here:

A DESPERATE 350-MILE WALK TO ESCAPE COVID

Maria Tambo's circumstances coerced her to leave Lima, the capital and the largest city of Peru. She was desperate and worried about hunger blighting her kids.

Tambo had come to the Peruvian Capital from Amazon Rainforest for her oldest child, Amelia, in hope of molding her to be the first member in the family to attend university.

Family had dreamt big when Tambo's 17- year- old won a prestigious scholarship to study at Lima's Universidad Cientifica del Sur. But Covid-19, like the heart-rending upshot it had on most of us didn't show mercy on her. The nation shuddered to a halt.

Close to two months of quarantine, they had no money left to pay for their rented room and food. She was then obdurate to return to their village 350 miles (563 km) away.

As public transportation ceased operating because of the lockdown, the only alternative was to complete the journey by foot. "I KNOW THE DANGER I AM PUTTING MY CHILDREN IN, BUT I DON'T HAVE A CHOICE. I EITHER DIE TRYING TO GET OUT OF HERE OR STARVE TO DEATH IN MY ROOM," she said CNN.
