IT’S THE HOTTEST DAY OF THE SUMMER. YOU CAN DO NOTHING, YOU CAN DO SOMETHING, OR YOU CAN …

Salvatore “Sal” Fragione is the Italian owner of a pizzeria in Brooklyn. A neighborhood local, Buggin’ Out, becomes upset when he sees that the pizzeria’s Wall of Fame exhibits only Italian actors. Buggin’ Out believes a pizzeria in a black neighborhood should showcase black actors, but Sal disagrees. The wall becomes a symbol of racism and hate to Buggin’ Out and to other people in the neighborhood, and tensions rise.

Spike Lee's DO THE RIGHT THING was originally released July 21, 1989. With an estimated budget of $6.5 million, the film grossed over $37 million in theaters worldwide.

Spike Lee criticized several critics for their perceived racist reviews in which they stated that the movie would incite anger and cause riots in the black population, outright arguing that if this were to happen the blood would be on Lee's hands. Lee defended his movie by stating that if white people can contain themselves from causing trouble after seeing movie violence in Arnold Schwarzenegger films, then so can black people. He would later praise Roger Ebert as one of the few white critics who understood the film's message of mutual understanding.

101k IMDb users give DO THE RIGHT THING (1989) an average score of 7.9/10.0 while 4.4k fans on Letterboxd give much higher marks for an average of 4.3/5.0.
