Karina Garcia - Inspiring one person at a time
While wearing many hats, Karina Garcia has been her community's voice.
First as a Television executive for TV Azteca , she traveled the #BayArea finding and highlighting #local stories.
Now as the community liaison for #SonomaCounty's district supervisor and as a part of the Springs Municipal Advisory Council , she is the eyes and ears of Sonoma County and, much like KSVY, the voice of #SonomaValley in our government offices.
In this conversation we discuss much more than her official roles, but the ways in which she continues to learn from the people around her, about her passion for travel, and about the countless ways we can inspire and be inspired by getting involved in our own communities.

What have you been #dreaming about?
Gene Kilgore is a dreamer and he knows #ranch country.
As the author of a best-selling travel guide, "Ranch Vacations," Gene has spent the past 40 years visiting and writing about #ranches all over the Americas to share the magic of the west with the world.
In this episode, we discuss what makes this long-standing tradition so special and how families can learn from their time spent in the great #outdoors.
We also talk about the circuitous journey Gene took before returning to his childhood #dream of making ranches an integral part of his life.
Starting a new #project ? Take this as a sign to just go for it!
@renata_mysonoma_ did. Renata Virk has more than a decade of experience in the publishing world.
Her background at @sonomamag and @vommag inspired her to create a new periodical in town called @thesocialpublication_sonomwith an aim similar to Hello Sonoma's: to highlight the people who make #Sonoma what Renata calls the "greatest little town in America."
In this episode we discuss how this project came to be, but also what made Renata so fascinated with storytelling, including her diverse linguistic and cultural background as well as what made her bravely start so many endeavors and what keeps her going.
@debby_irving spent the first few chapters of her life outside Boston in a town not so different from #Sonoma.
After a long career in non-profits she decided to pursue a masters degree where she ended up exploring the roots of her upbringing in an unexpected and illuminating way.
The discoveries she made informed her award-winning book, "Waking Up White” which chronicle her journey towards a better understanding of #race in America.
In our conversation we discuss some of the history of discrimination in America, the challenges we all face, and some enlightening possibilities for self-discovery and improvement.
Dr. King said back in 1957 that “Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly.” And that “We have before us the glorious opportunity to inject a new dimension of love into the veins of our civilization.”
This conversation with Debby helped advance my education in what we can do to make our world more equitable for everyone. Here’s to a civilization with more love. #mlkday
Homelessness is a challenging issue in any city.
In Sonoma, articles about vulnerable people have often been featured in local newspapers and social media, but rarely do personal stories make it to the front page.
In this episode, I talk with Louis and Giulia, who graciously agreed to tell me more about experiencing #homelessness.
I found both interviews to be both tragic and inspiring, but they highlight the importance of humanizing our neighbors in #Sonoma who are going through a tough time.
The story of wine in #sonomavalley didn't start with Agoston Haraszthy, but the legacy he left behind helped build the valley into what it is today.
On this episode, @bartholomewestate and Bartholomew Park resident historian, Frank Pope, shares some of Sonoma's lesser known history on the path towards the popular tourist destination that draws #wine lovers from around the country.
From Native American planters to a young Hungarian immigrant who shaped the valley to the important role of Chinese laborers, Frank brings these tales to life with his vast expertise and lively storytelling.

@m0jib recently graduated from the @harvardkennedyschool from which he will begin a career of public service as a diplomat, but today we talk to him about some of his other passions: #spirituality, #culture, #language, and #music. "Music is everything," he says in this episode. I agree!
He also shares his thoughts on learning during a pandemic and doing what he does best: making the best of life and what is presented to him.
This interview was recorded #BeyondSonoma, but the lessons shared here can be applied to people everywhere.
Kathy King stands up for what’s right.
And to her in the 1980s, that meant protesting the continued deployment of the MX missiles on ranch property in rural Montana and Wyoming.
The fact she got arrested is a testament to how far she’s willing to go to follow her #innercompass .
After years working with, and training #nonprofits throughout the west, Kathy is now the executive director of Sonoma Overnight Support (@sos_haven ), where she leads the effort to feed the hungry and shelter the homeless in #Sonoma and #SonomaValley.
In this interview we discuss how she found the nonprofit path, her experience with motherhood, and what she’s learned as a fundraising expert. The journey has been a long one, but she continues to bend the arc of the universe towards justice – and always with a good quote or two.
@emily.whittier.irving was steadily on the path towards prescribed success in the academic world.
After completing her undergraduate at Williams, she was working through her PhD at Harvard studying equity in business.
To all those who knew her it looked like #success , but something didn't feel right.
In this episode, we discuss what that truly felt like and what happened once she listened to that voice. We discuss the merit of following one's own path rather than one which impresses everyone else. It's not easy, but it's worth it.
This interview took place #beyondsonoma, but the conversation we had about following your inner voice applies to many young people wherever they may be.
Jack Ding's arrival to the city council came first with a long journey to the United States from China.
He grew up just outside Shanghai before immigrating to the US where he would eventually get an MBA and start a local tax company on Broadway.
In this episode, we talk about what it was like to reeducate yourself in a new country, start a new business, and eventually become the first Chinese city council member in #Sonoma's history.
Since this episode was originally broadcast, council member Ding has become Mayor Ding, adding another first to Sonoma's city council history. In addition to his board positions on @sos_haven and @ksvy_svtv , Jack continues to manage his tax business located on Broadway.
Kate Kennedy is Sonoma's resident Shakespearean, theater director, and thespian extraordinaire.
From the moment she steps onstage (directing or acting), the she brings the audience to rapt attention, and by the time she steps off, they've rediscovered the magic of theater.
Kate has brought experiences from her worldly travels to our town in the form of #theater camps, performances, and lessons for all ages.
Kate’s loyal players and audiences come back again and again to see what she comes up with next, and she keeps giving them an amazing show.

Few towns are lucky enough to have a bookstore like @sonomareadersbooks in #Sonoma.
Founded in 1991 by Lilla and Andy Weinberger, the store now welcomes visitors from all over the world to browse its shelves.
Though there are many stores that sell #books (both on and offline), Readers' has truly become, as it says on their characteristic bookmark, "a gathering place for book lovers of all ages."
This episode came out on the eve of their 30th anniversary where we peek behind the curtain to speak with some of the people that make Readers' so special.
