Hope you all enjoy our deep dive into Elvis' 1970 Nashville Marathon. That's the Way it Is, Elvis Country, Love Letters from Elvis + even a cut from Elvis Now - all recorded within a week's worth of sessions.

We are reaching the end of our journey. We had hoped to get this final episode out in time for the 50th anniversary of Elvis' June 1970 Nashville marathon sessions, but last month was a crazy one with both Jason and Shane putting out new records. Here's PART TWO of our ZOOM chat finale episode on Elvis' 1970 'Nashville Marathon' session which yielded both Jason's favorite, That's the Way it Is, and Shane's favorite, Elvis Country. This part continues from song 18 (You Don't Have to Say You Love You) thru 40 (Rags to Riches). Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4Kcye4w1RMDfsEqfH2r9O7?si=vGzWl3HNStGN9H2RjYzqew

A more edited version of both of these parts will be combined and posted to streaming platforms soon. It's been quite a journey, thanks for joining us! xx

Hello friends of the podcast! We are reaching the end of our journey. We had hoped to get this final episode out in time for the 50th anniversary of Elvis' June 1970 Nashville marathon sessions, but last month was a crazy one with both Jason and Shane putting out new records. Jason's The Explorers Club put out two records on June 12th (which Shane was also involved with), and Shane's Dolour put out The Royal We on June 19th. So we've been super busy with those releases. But we decided in the spirit of this era we are now all living in, that we'd do a ZOOM recording for this last episode, which we've split into two parts. We will be uploading a more edited version onto streaming platforms in the next few days, but if you want the full raw experience - here it is! Jason's final album of our series is That's the Way it Is, and Shane's is Elvis Country - and since they were both recorded simultaneously (along with what ended up on the Love Letters From Elvis album), we've decided to go through the sessions day-by-day to give you a break down of all 40 recordings Elvis made over the course of 5 days in June, and one final day in September 1970. To listen along - que up this Spotify playlist (https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4Kcye4w1RMDfsEqfH2r9O7?si=cwIC2E56TgWzs-t8KvlbBg). Part one goes through the first 17 songs recorded - from "Tiger Man (jam)" through "It Ain't No Big Thing (But it's Growing)." Part two will be posted shortly.

Did you know in 1970, when Elvis was set to play his first appearance at the Houston Astrodome, the venue didn’t want Elvis bringing his all-black backing group The Sweet Inspirations, who not only sang in his band, but also opened most of his shows from 1969 til Elvis died in 1977. They said, 'Well, you can leave the black girls home. You don't have to bring them'. Elvis was having none of that.

Myna Smith (of The Sweet Inspirations): “Elvis responded with, 'Well if they don't come, I don't come'. But he was really upset about it. There was one person in particular who had sent the message. So when we got there, we were greeted by this little blonde in a convertible and she had to drive us around and she was his daughter. So Elvis always made sure he got even. I'm sure he said, 'And I want your daughter to drive them'.”

Hope y’all are enjoying our deep dive into Elvis’ gospel music. Here’s a photo of the great JD Sumner of the Stamps Quartet who performed with Elvis from ‘72-‘77 with a 10 year old not-dorky-at-all kid named Shane. Notice the matching TCB necklaces, one of them did not turn your neck green.

Have you checked out the new episode yet? This episode features a few more personal connections than usual. Shane discovered a lot of family connections between his Hawaiian-steel-guitar-playing grandpa Bud Tutmarc being friends with Blue Hawaii’s pedal steel player Alvino Ray, and his step-great-grandma Bonnie Guitar playing on the demo for “No More.” Hope you enjoy our deep dive into the world of Elvis’ Blue Hawaii.

This episode is Shane and Jason's first foray into Soundtrack Elvis with his tropical masterpiece, 'Blue Hawaii' from 1961. The boys break down each song with fascinating backstories on the songwriting, musicians, and plenty of tangents - ranging from Andy Williams to Arcade Fire, from Queen Lili'uokalani to Ed Wood. And being that this episode deals with Hollywood Elvis for the first time, we include a chat with Andrew and Rob of Jailhouse Talk: An Elvis Movie Podcast. So throw a lei around your neck, grab a pineapple drink, and dive in! theElvisPodcast.podomatic.com

Remembering Mike Leech of the Memphis Boys (pictured far left with Elvis) who passed away on this date in 2017. Mike played bass and arranged the horns and strings for Elvis’ legendary 1969 American Sound sessions (including Suspicious Minds). And pictured in 2011 with our very own co-host Shane Tutmarc. Mike played bass and arranged the horns, winds, and strings for Tutmarc’s album Borrowed Trouble, released in 2014. It was Mike’s final sessions. https://shanetutmarc.bandcamp.com/album/borrowed-trouble
