𝐍𝐎𝐓𝐄 𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐄𝐃𝐈𝐓𝐎𝐑

𝐷𝑒𝑎𝑟 𝑅𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑒𝑟𝑠,

My heart leaps for joy as this Issue has finally reached your hands. I couldn’t be any prouder that we are able to release three issues of Tikad in a year! Tikad is the only existing, updated faculty newsletter in the entire division of Surigao del Norte.

March 11 marks the exact date of Tikad’s 1st anniversary. Despite delays due to unforeseeable circumstances, the release of this issue coincides with my birthday and my only wish is that you read it and you continue to patronize this very work of creativity and passion.

The school has come a long way. Back when the first issue was released, we still adopted the modular distance learning. Now, the school has shifted to limited face-to-face classes. The school has also achieved a lot in a year, from school physical improvements to instructional delivery. We take pride that we are able to document our journey as a learning institution through this newsletter. We will not stop here.

I have huge dreams for Tikad. We are working to improve every issue. We hope that with your support, we shall witness an award-winning Tikad both locally and internationally. Nothing is impossible if we pursue and persevere, right?

I would like to thank my editorial staff and the school administration for supporting us. I have become more motivated in this work as I witness that many of my co-teachers now are interested to write and be part of Tikad’s journey – the publication’s way of empowering others to write!

Tikad has just started.

Expect for more from us. We will evolve. We will continue to thrive.

To promote health and well-being, ASASHS teachers enrolled in the Wellness Massage Course or Hilot under TESDA’s Training for Work Scholarship Program (TWSP).

Mr. Joselito Ecuben, a senior TESDA specialist, oriented all the scholars on the specifics about the course and how they could complete it. The training started with basic massage lessons especially on relieving body pain caused by stress.

The trainees are required to complete 15 sessions which cover the four competencies in wellness massage, namely: Plan the wellness massage program for client/s; provide preliminary services to client/s; apply wellness massage techniques; and provide advice on post-wellness massage services and then submit videos as return demonstration.

Chesna Blythe C. Ycong, the owner of C-Hilot Wellness Massage Center, taught the teacher-scholars how to perform proper massage on clients.

"A typical hilot session begins with the application of oil onto the skin, followed by the deft fingers feeling the body for areas of congestion, and then gently massaging the body with upward, circular, or downward strokes," Ycong explained as she demonstrated.

She also stressed that the improper way of massaging will result in body pain.

ASASHS teachers submitted their videos online as return demonstration on what they had learned from the training course.

A total of 196 learners of Alegria Stand Alone Senior High School (ASASHS) received an Academic Excellence Award for the first semester of School Year 2021-2022 during the Recognition Day with the theme, "Academic Excellence Transcends Adversities" on February 28, 2022.

Grade 11 has 115 awardees, while Grade 12 has 81 across all strands in Academic and TVL Tracks.

School Principal III Leodrita U. Jerusalem welcomed the students and their parents and delivered her opening remarks.

She shared that the school initiated this event to acknowledge students’ hard work despite the adversities that have tried to impede their academic journey such as the pandemic and typhoon Odette.

“You deserve to be appreciated for all the efforts you have done to improve your scholastic standing. Continue to burn the midnight candles and surely your dreams will come to fruition if you refuse to give up,” Jerusalem addressed the students.

She also thanked the parents for their support to their children and to the school. “Our dear parents, take pride because your children’s achievements are your achievements as well,” she added.

Grade 11 and Grade 12 advisers facilitated the awarding of certificates and congratulated their students for their achievement.

General PTA President Arnold L. Dagcuta shared his message to the students to cap the event.

He reminded the students that their achievement would have been impossible if not for their parents who toiled days and nights to provide for their needs.

Finally, the student awardees cherished the moment and proceeded to their respective classrooms to celebrate with their classmates and advisers.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) conducted Simultaneous Exercise (SIMEX) on Man-Made Disaster Preparedness at Alegria Stand Alone Senior High School (ASASHS) on March 1, 2022.

Police officers and firefighters assigned in Alegria demonstrated drills to enhance the knowledge of the students and teachers about proper response in times of disasters such as fire and armed conflict.

In line with the observance of Fire Prevention Month, the BFP encouraged the participants to take fire drills seriously to avoid fire accidents and possible injuries in the future.

FO3 Hernan O Polvorosa, one of the resource speakers, emphasized the importance of being ready and well-informed when a fire incident occurs. He noted that the Municipal BFP has been doing these drills yearly to ensure readiness and safety during a fire that may damage properties or worse—claim lives.

Meanwhile, Municipal Chief of Police Pcpt Arlan P. Detablan said that the PNP is continuously educating the public on the man-made disaster preparedness especially on the basic safety tips like “drop and cover”.

“These drills will not only educate the students and faculty members but also to evaluate the efficiency of the school’s emergency plan,” Detablan said.

ASASHS DRR Coordinator Romeo M. Montilla thanked the men in uniform for taking time to orient the students and teachers about man-made disasters and how they can take necessary precautions during emergencies.

The School DRR Team vowed to partner with the concerned agencies to continue to raise awareness among students and teachers about the significance of disaster preparedness and to ensure that the school defenses against disasters are in place and working.

Alegria Stand Alone Senior High School (ASASHS) launched Project DARE as a school-initiated project that aims to hone SHS learners' reading capabilities on August 23, 2021.

Project DARE or Digitized and Advanced Reading Enhancement is the school’s innovative reading system that incorporates contextualized reading materials to ensure effectiveness.

School Principal III Leodrita U. Jerusalem emphasized that Project DARE is the institution’s response to DepEd’s initiative ‘Brigada Pagbasa’ which is a movement that seeks to address the nation’s literacy gap.

“This school year's Brigada Eskwela calls not only for stakeholders’ solidarity in cleaning and beautifying schools, but most importantly the department encourages teachers, parents and other stakeholders to take the lead in nurturing learners' love for reading,” Jerusalem stated.

Project proponent Ramon L. Orcullo, Jr. shared that Project DARE will help improve students’ reading comprehension, inference, and judgment.

“The aim of this project is for students to show appreciation towards innovative, digitized measures of improving reading and realize fully the benefits of technology in reading intervention while providing authentic learning experience,” Orcullo said.

Meanwhile, School Reading Coordinators Honey June R. Matulac and Jaxson C. Mollida worked closely with the advisers to implement the said project and hoped to establish a culture of intensified reading among senior high school learners.

During the Phase I of Project DARE, the teachers conducted diagnostic activities to measure reading and comprehension levels of the students and to statistically determine their reading difficulties.

After consolidating the results, the language teachers huddled and took time in designing and evaluating reading interventions and reading materials tailored-fit to the needs of the students.

The project team also tapped its alumni, stakeholders and partners who wished to extend their resources for this cause.

Lastly, the faculty and staff of ASASHS, with Project DARE at hand, hope to become responsive to the reading needs of the learners and be proactive in helping them become fluent and independent readers.

USEC. SAN ANTONIO VISITS ALEGRIA STAND-ALONE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

By Ramon Lauron Orcullo

Into the fourth week since the implementation of limited face-to-face classes, Undersecretary for Curriculum and Instruction Diosdado M. San Antonio from DepEd Central Office visited Alegria Stand Alone Senior High School (ASASHS) and monitored the status of its pilot run on December 07, 2021.

DepEd Caraga Regional Director Ma. Gemma M. Ledesma, CESO V, Curriculum and Learning Management Division chief Dr. Isidro M. Biol, Jr., and DepEd Surigao del Norte Superintendent Ma. Teresa M. Real accompanied the undersecretary during the said visit.

Usec. San Antonio roamed around the campus to check on some classrooms and facilities after practicing the health checking protocols at the triage booth.

The school also narrated to the undersecretary the school’s journey in the preparation up to the conduct of limited face-to-face classes.

After a short conference, San Antonio asked about how the school designs and conducts its instruction and assessment in modular distance learning and now with face-to-face classes.

The undersecretary also asked about the school’s passing rate in the National Certificate of TESDA and which curriculum exits most graduates choose to pursue.

He congratulated the school administrator and the teachers for working so hard to provide quality education to the learners despite the pandemic and for gaining promising results in terms of its curriculum and instruction.

Alegria Municipal Mayor and Vice Mayor Rene G. Esma and Dominador G. Esma were also present during the visit to show their support to ASASHS in all its undertaking since its implementation of the senior high school curriculum in 2016.

Usec. San Antonio and RD Ledesma thanked the stakeholders for helping the school realize its plans for the benefit of the learners. They were amazed by the school’s huge transformation despite being a new school.

School administrators from Alegria District were among those who welcomed the undersecretary during his visit.

RD Ledesma thanked the teachers and the school administrator for rising to the challenge and for making it possible for the learners to go back to school safely.

She likewise encouraged the teachers to be open about their suggestions, comments, and feedback to improve the delivery of instruction in this time of the pandemic.

“Please do not hesitate to open up. We learn from our experiences,” she said.

RD Ledesma said that they will be sending a team to closely monitor the implementation of face-to-face classes.

Meanwhile, DepEd SDN Schools Division Superintendent Ma. Teresa M. Real reminded the teachers during the visit to take note of their observations in the conduct of face-to-face classes as a basis for technical assistance.

RD Ledesma and company went through the process and observed minimum health standards upon check-in in the school premises.

The teachers also demonstrated the steps as these could be the same steps students have to go through on their comeback.

SDS Real told the teachers to make the opening of classes extra special and memorable.

“Let us welcome the students with fun and excitement on their first day,” she said.

DepEd SDN Assistant Schools Division Superintendent Leonevee V. Silvosa, Curriculum Implementation Division chief Dominico P. Larong, and Schools Governance and Operations Division chief Julieta Ranay Virtudazo also accompanied the regional director in the said school visit.

To show appreciation to ASASHS teachers for their contribution to education, the SSG volunteers organized a celebration in line with World Teachers’ Day on October 5, 2021.

The said gathering commenced with teachers sashaying on a red carpet with their leis that show “Award for Greatness”.

SHS coordinator Arlene C. Giducos formally opened the program and encouraged the teachers to enjoy the rest of the celebration and forget first anything about their paperwork.

“The efforts that our students made for today’s celebration show honor and appreciation for all the hustles we have done for education especially during these difficult times,” she added.

Grades 11 and 12 students voluntarily contributed an amount to make the event more special for the teachers. They were able to purchase bouquets of roses and spend some on the food and decoration.

Meanwhile, the SSG volunteers collaborated with the classroom presidents to film a short video greeting for their advisers. Former ASASHS students also sent their video greetings which were shown during the program.

School Principal III Dr. Leodrita Jerusalem highlighted in her message that the teachers’ acts of bravery and commendable sacrifices are worthy to celebrate. She then thanked the prime movers of the celebration led by the SSG adviser Jake Francis B. Lumbres.

“Five years have passed since the implementation of senior high school and still we’re here, firmly working together. Our job has never been easy, but because of our competent teachers, we have managed to triumph,” she expressed.

Select students also dedicated poems and songs to the teachers and offered a flash mob. Laughter and joyous moments filled the venue as the teachers actively participated in the fun games.

Capping off the celebration was a viewing of a slideshow presentation of the teachers’ captured moments during the celebration.

All ASASHS teachers expressed their gratitude to the students for their thoughtfulness, generosity, and creativity in pulling off such a fun event. #

ASASHS Science teachers Alexander R. Efren and Dawn Novaliza I. Ranay presented their research study titled “Improving the Conceptual Understanding of Grade 11 students on Chemical Bonding through LEGO Method” during the 3rd Division Research Congress of DepEd Surigao del Norte (SDN).

The Schools Division Research Committee conducted this year’s research congress through a Facebook Live on July 16, 2021 with the theme: “Translating Research Evidences into Best Practices during COVID-19 and Beyond”.

Efren and Ranay remarked that their research aims to determine the effectiveness of LEGO method in improving students’ understanding of chemical bonding.

“Using LEGO bricks (LEGO method) brings another level of experience to learners since they can touch the studied rule (octet rule) in the formation of compounds and apply, analyze, and evaluate which elements when form bond complies with the octet rule. Hence, it promotes higher order thinking skills in learners. By making Lego brick model of compounds, it promotes manipulative skills as well,” Efren explained during the presentation.

ASASHS School Principal III Leodrita U. Jerusalem congratulated Efren and Ranay in completing their study despite the pandemic. She also acknowledged that the school is one with DepEd in promoting research culture to address various problems in the teaching-learning process.

Sixteen (16) other researches from various schools in the division were also presented during the virtual research congress which lasted five hours.

Division Research Coordinator Grace Urbiztondo emphasized the importance of research and she is looking forward to more action and basic researches from the SDN teachers in the future.

Meanwhile, Schools Division Superintendent Maria Teresa Real addressed the live stream viewers, “Truly, I am immensely proud of this undertaking, for this is a clear manifestation that the Schools Division of Surigao del Norte is continually growing, continuously improving.”

This division conducts Research Congress to present completed action and basic researches of SDN teachers under Teaching and Learning, Child Protection, Human Resource Development, and Governance.
