In this edition of New Venture Lab, we highlight a Spokane podcast and magazine, Beneath Your Beautiful.

I, (Ashley), had the opportunity to talk with its creator, Hara Allison, about the organization's mission, motivation, and background.

Hara began Beneath Your Beautiful podcast in 2021, after photographing more than 50 women. These artful projects led to insightful conversations about our ability to rise above our challenges. One project stood out to me, called SEE ME. Hara hand-painted words on women’s backs that described who they know themselves to be, not what they look like, or people assume. This was very empowering for the participants.

Hara was also very moved by these emotional and inspiring conversations and photographs, which led to the creation of Beneath Your Beautiful. A year after the podcast was first aired, Hara began designing and publishing the magazine which showcases stories, fine art and photographs that uncover the beauty that can be found everywhere, even as we struggle.

Hara is an award-winning graphic designer who graduated from Florida International University in 1990. She is also an award-winning photographer.

Hara also shared the purpose of Beneath Your Beautiful: Vision: To show that we are inherently worthy, perfect as is, and that beauty can be found everywhere. Mission: To spread hope by sharing raw, compassionate stories, through print and audio, in a safe space that inspires trust and authenticity.

We discussed the different editing techniques for the podcast and magazine. She described the thoughtful process she uses to “craft this art.” She takes careful consideration, positively showcasing the guest and offering the listener a wonderful experience.

Hara’s main goal for Beneath Your Beautiful is to create a platform that allows the audience to feel less alone and to know they are perfect, as is, reinforcing their self-worth.

Hara would like to partner with corporations that tackle the same societal issues and who have similar values. She sees the need for this in Spokane and worldwide, as her current audience is all around the world!

In addition her listeners and readers, Hara’s Board of Advisors are worldwide as well, with one as far as Zimbabwe and another in Australia! She hopes, with their varied backgrounds and mission-driven mindsets, they will help Beneath Your Beautiful expand and reach broader audiences.

Hara joked, “If Oprah saw this, she would say, ‘Oh! I need to underwrite that!’”

Hara and I discussed the value of starting and building Beneath Your Beautiful in Spokane. She shared that the online aspect allows for a worldwide audience, offering true accessibility, contributing to the mission.

As the landscape of media outlets grow and shift, Hara’s desire is to create an alternative to the polarized narratives, by producing inspiring content that shows how alike we are, rather our differences.

The next issue of the hardcopy and digital magazine comes out on July 1st and can be found at BeneathYourBeautiful.org.

The conversation I had with Hara was an excellent reminder of why entrepreneurs are important for the continuous development, growth, and success of any town, city, and society. The passion she has for her work and for emphasizing the importance of self-love and worth was present throughout our whole conversation and left me feeling inspired.

Sara is a multidisciplinary artist known for her bold use of color, dynamic composition, and the energy in her imagery. She was born in rural, central British Columbia, Canada, to a family of artists, and has lived all over Western Canada and even the Yukon.

As a warrior for social justice, Sara is committed to giving back to the community and supporting causes close to her heart. She regularly donates to charitable organizations that work towards building a more equitable and sustainable future for all. Sara is dedicated to making a tangible difference in the world through her art.

In addition to her practice, Sara is deeply committed to fostering creativity and artistic expression in women and children. She volunteers her time mentoring aspiring artists, leading workshops for kids and community art projects that empower others to find their own creative voices.
