Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said the West made a "terrible mistake" and let President Vladimir Putin "get away" with annexing Crimea in 2014.

Writing in the Telegraph, Mr Johnson said ending the West's dependence on Russian oil and gas was vital to end Kremlin "bullying".

It comes as the UK banned exports of luxury goods to Russia among other sanctions.

About 100 more people are also expected to be sanctioned under a new law.

The legislation allows the UK to target individuals alongside the US and the European Union, which has signed off its fourth package of sanctions against Russia.

In addition, Mr Johnson said the only way to halt President Putin's "continuous blackmail" was by ending western reliance on Russian fossil fuels - a process that would be "painful".

The prime minister is preparing to head to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf for talks about increasing production of oil and gas to compensate for reduced Russian supplies.

Wordle moved from its original web address to one run by the New York Times (NYT) last weekend and some players are not happy.

Those still playing the daily word game on the original website - because they downloaded it or have not refreshed their browser - are getting different words to solve from the NYT version.

That is because the paper has removed five-letter words it deemed offensive.

But it has denied the other big fans' complaint - that it has got harder.

Fans have not been impressed by the switchover
The game, which asks players to find a five-letter word each day with clues along the way, has grown in popularity from fewer than 100 players in November to millions by the end of January.

Its creator, Josh Wardle, initially said he didn't intend to make money from the game but later sold it to the NYT for an undisclosed seven-figure sum.

Many fans took to Twitter to complain that since the NYT took over its stewardship - with words such as ultra and caulk - the puzzle appeared more challenging.

Comedian Trevor Noah summed up many people's feelings, tweeting: "Wordle isn't fun since the New York Times took over. Is it just me?"

I thought was just joking but it really feels like Wordle isn’t fun since the New York Times took over. Is it just me??🧐

And another player, Denise Dewald, felt that the game had lost some of its original appeal - simplicity.

One of the joys of Wordle was that it was not too hard. It was a brief respite of feeling like things in the world were actually solvable.

And the had to come along and ruin it.

Dudes, it’s not supposed to be like the NYT crossword. It’s like Jumble, only shorter.

The NYT denied any changes to gameplay, but it did admit that it was in the process of removing "offensive words" which included w***e, slave and w***h from both the list of acceptable guesses and the answers.

That is why players of the original version are now out of sync with the NYT version.

One of the big appeals of the game was that players were all solving the same word each day. The loss of this shared experience and the fact that there are now competing versions has angered fans.

In response, the NYT is urging everyone to migrate to its version.

As to what may happen next, the paper has said the game will remain free, for the time being at least.

Meanwhile, fan Bill Fletcher called for calm in the Wordle community.

Stunning to me that people are tearing themselves to pieces, and attacking other people, over a perfectly enjoyable and simple word game. This is just a feel good story about a guy who created a game out of love and then got a nice payday from it as a bonus.

Algorithm decisions
In response Amazon said: "Our employees have always had the choice of whether or not to join a union, and they overwhelmingly chose not to join the RWDSU last year. We look forward to our team in BHM1 having their voices heard again."

Union membership in the US is low - just 6.3% of the private sector workforce, according to the US Department of Labour.

Amazon workers in Japan, the UK, Germany, Italy, France and Poland are all unionised. Issues which the unions representing them look into include work-rate demands, injuries and the increasing use of algorithms in deciding how workers perform.

Neuralink, the firm set up by Tesla boss Elon Musk to develop a device which connects our brains to computers, has denied animal cruelty claims.

A complaint filed last week to the US Department of Agriculture alleged cruel treatment of macaque monkeys which are being used to test the technology.

In a blog, Neuralink said it worked with animals in the "most humane and ethical way possible".

The firm hopes to begin human trials of the device later this year.

In the blog - posted in response to recent criticism - Neuralink emphasises its commitment to animal welfare: "Our central mission is to design an animal care program prioritising the needs of the animals, rather than the typical strategy of building for human convenience alone."

"The use of every animal was extensively planned and considered to balance scientific discovery with the ethical use of animals," it stated.

'Seizures and trauma'
At the start of the research, Neuralink partnered with Davis National Primate Research Center - part of the University of California - but in 2020 built its own vivarium to house the monkeys, with the stated intention of "improving upon" current standards.

The complaint was filed last week by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine against UC Davis, and related to "invasive and deadly brain experiments conducted on 23 monkeys".

It claims: "Most of the animals had portions of their skulls removed to implant electrodes in their brains."

It also alleges that macaque monkeys used in the experiment were caged alone, suffered "facial trauma" and had seizures and infections local to the site of the implant.

Some were euthanised before they were used in experiments, it claims.

The Committee said it acquired the information from 600 pages of documents released after it filed a public records legal action last year.

It has now filed a second legal action to compel the university to release videos and photos of the monkeys.

The BBC has asked UC Davis for comment.

'Surgical complication'
In its rebuttal of the claims, Neuralink acknowledged that two animals were put to death "at planned end dates to gather important histological data".

Another six monkeys were euthanised on the medical advice of the veterinary team at UC Davis, it said.

"These reasons included one surgical complication involving the use of the FDA-approved product, BioGlue, one device failure and four suspected device-association infections," it said.

It added: "While the facilities and care at UC Davis did, and continue to meet, federally-mandated standards, we absolutely wanted to improve upon these standards as we transitioned animals to our in-house facilities.

In 2020, the firm opened a 6,000 square ft vivarium, housing farm animals and rhesus macaques. In the blog, it posted pictures of the unit, showing toys, food and what it called "enrichment devices" to allow animals to forage.

UK wage growth continued to lag behind the rising cost of living between October and December, figures show.

Wages rose, but when taking inflation into account, pay showed a 0.8% fall from a year earlier, said the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Latest figures also show that the unemployment rate fell to 4.1% while job vacancies hit a fresh record high.

Unemployment is now "only fractionally" above where it was before the pandemic, said the ONS.

According to the ONS, employees' regular pay, excluding bonuses, grew by 3.7% between October and December from a year earlier - which is high compared with rates seen over the last decade.

However, the rising cost of food, energy and household goods has pushed inflation up by 5.4% in the 12 months to December. This means that real wages fell by 0.8%.

The Bank of England has warned this squeeze on workers will get worse, with inflation set to rise above 7% this year.

But the ONS said early estimates suggest employers are starting to push up wages further and faster in response.

Why are prices rising so quickly?

Interest rates rise again in bid to cool prices
It said that for workers on payrolls in January, median monthly wages increased by 6.3% compared with the same month last year, and they were 10.3% higher than before the pandemic in February 2020.

Employers are having to increase salaries as they face a continuing shortage of workers.

Exercise brand Peloton is attracting bid attention from the likes of Amazon and Nike, according to reports.

They have been attracted by the soaring sales of Peloton's exercise bikes and treadmills during the pandemic.

Suitors have not been put off by the return to gyms post-lockdown, which has left the firm worth less than a fifth of its peak $50bn valuation.

There have also been recent PR disasters when TV characters had heart attacks when using Peloton machines.

Amazon declined to confirm or deny whether it was considering making an offer for the US exercise equipment maker.

When the rumour was reported in the Wall Street Journal on Friday it sent shares in the firm surging more than 30% in after-hours trading.

Tesla is recalling nearly 54,000 vehicles because a software feature lets them roll through stop signs.

The company will issue an over-the-air software update that disables the Full Self-Driving Beta (FSDB) "rolling stop" function.

Elon Musk, the firm's chief executive tweeted that there were no safety issues and the cars just slowed down.

All-way stop signs, common on North American roads, require drivers to halt completely, before proceeding.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA): "Failing to stop at a stop sign can increase the risk of a crash."

In recall documents, the electric vehicle maker notes that if certain conditions are met, the "rolling stop" feature is designed to allow the vehicle to travel through all-way-stop intersections at up to 5.6mph without coming to a complete stop.

Tesla says the conditions include:

the functionality must be enabled in FSDB settings.
the vehicle must be travelling below 5.6mph
no relevant moving cars, pedestrians or cyclists are detected near the intersection
all roads entering the intersection have a speed limit of 30 mph
In January, Tesla met with NHTSA to discuss the rolling-stop feature, and shortly afterwards decided on a voluntary recall.

It covers some 2016-2022 Model S and Model X, 2017-2022 Model 3, and 2020-2022 Model Y vehicles.
