"Embark on a journey with the world's most powerful passports in 2024. The latest Henley Passport Index reveals this exclusive ranking derived from data meticulously curated by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and Spain lead the way, granting visa-free access to an impressive 194 global destinations.
Over the last half-decade, Japan and Singapore have stood unyielding at the forefront, holding the number one position. Yet, this quarter's rankings unveil a remarkable shift, witnessing European nations rising in the ranks. Finland and Sweden, alongside South Korea, now share the second spot, extending visa-free entry to 193 destinations. Meanwhile, Austria, Denmark, Ireland, and the Netherlands collectively secured the third position, granting passport holders unrestricted access to 192 global destinations.
The dynamics of global passport power are evolving. India's passport is ranked 80th on the list, with citizens allowed to travel to 62 countries without a visa, including popular tourist destinations like Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. India shares its current rank with Uzbekistan, while neighboring Pakistan is positioned at 100. India's position is a slight improvement from the previous year when it was ranked 84. Among India's neighbors, the Maldives leads the pack at 58, followed by China at 62, Bhutan at 87, Myanmar at 92, Sri Lanka at 96, Bangladesh at 97, and Nepal at 98.
Kristen H. Kälin, the chairman of Henley & Partners and the visionary behind the Passport Index, draws attention to the growing global mobility gap among nations. Despite a general trend towards enhanced travel freedom in the last two decades, the discrepancy between the highest and lowest positions on the index has now reached an unprecedented peak. Mr. Kälin said the average number of destinations travelers can access visa-free has nearly doubled from 58 in 2006 to 111 in 2024, emphasizing the stark contrast in global mobility. Kristen underscored that the highest-ranked countries revel in the privilege of accessing a staggering 166 more destinations visa-free compared to Afghanistan, currently holding the bottom spot with only 28 visa-free countries. Syria follows closely with access to just 29 destinations, securing the second lowest position, trailed by Iraq with 31.
