SATB Divisi With Organ The Christ Church Canticles are grounded in the intersection of the ancient and the present. On one hand, we have ancient texts, which are quite literally pivotal moments in the Bible. The Magnificat (the Song of Mary) is the beginning of the New Covenant, which is why in eve

Many of you will be doing Herzliebster Jesu this Holy Week and I invite you to check out my setting of verse 4 for a ca****la choir. We use this as a choir only verse in the otherwise congregational singing of the hymn every year on Palm Sunday. It's downloadable free of charge here:

https://www.ecclesialpress.com/shop/p/choral-verse-for-herzliebster-jesu-v-4

This setting of verse 4 from the hymn tune Herzliebster Jesu makes for a great interlude in an otherwise congregational singing of the hymn. Please feel free to use it free of charge.

“Christe Sanctorum” is one of my favorite hymn tunes, so this week I wrote a new harmonization for the last verse with a descant. Here it is (sans the descant) with a little improvised intro. Enjoy!

Today is Candlemas, when Simon and Anna proclaim Jesus to be "a light to enlighten the nations." The feast is documented back to the 4th century but one of the most common texts used to celebrate it, the "Phos Hilaron," predates Candlemas by a century and is considered the oldest extant non-scriptural Christian prayer. Here is my setting, recorded at Jesus College, Cambridge, which is available at www.ecclesialpress.com.

Elizabeth Poston's setting of "Jesus Christ, the Apple Tree," is a standard carol for many churches throughout the year. The Covid Quartet of Christ Church, Raleigh, recorded it during advent. All of these recordings were done so socially distanced (each singer 15ft apart and facing the same direction, no conductor), masked, and after each singer receieved a negative COVID test result. Singers are Caroline Vaughan, Mandy Traylor, Aaron Carlyle, and David Jernigan (bass & director)

Janette Fishell's creativity in hymn accompaniments was one of the great inspirations of my undergrad. Her "We Three Kings" is one of my favorites and is an annual highlight for us at Christ Church, Raleigh. Enjoy!
