Is covering court scary for journalists? You bet. But Macaranga tackles that with training and the results are immediate. https://www.macaranga.org/blog-2024/ -in-court

The target of this court reporting-focussed workshop is actually wildlife crimes: the over-exploitation of nature is one of the 5 leading causes of biodiversity loss.

Building court reporting skills is part of Macaranga’s multi-newsroom mentorship project over the next year. It seeks to explore issues as drivers of the over-exploitation of nature, right up to court sentences of wildlife crimes. Look out for upcoming stories!

Another component of our project is youth participation.
YUFE has come on board to co-create social media posts on this topic. Look out for the hashtag Read more here: https://www.macaranga.org/blog-2024/ -2024-25

Led by Siew Lyn, our media workshop was hosted by Traffic Southeast Asia and the court reporting session was conducted by veteran Shaila Koshy. Thank you to all the journos who made time to attend the workshop and work hard to develop story ideas.

The ‘Macaranga Mentorship on Wildlife Trade and Crime in Malaysia’ project is supported by Internews Earth Journalism Network.

A win for Orang Asli against a ‘renewable energy’ project – a micro-hydro dam – on customary lands in Perak. Macaranga interviewed one of the villagers earlier this year. Perak is planning 31 mini hydro projects throughout the state.

BREAKING NEWS: COURT DECLARES THE SEMAI OF ULU GERUNTUM OWNERS OF THEIR CUSTOMARY LAND

Justice Dato' Bhupindar Singh of the Ipoh High Court today declared the Semai people of Ulu Geruntum as the rightful owners of almost 3,000 hectares of tanah adat or customary lands.

In 2018, the Semai people of Ulu Geruntum filed a lawsuit against two private companies, the Perak government, the federal government, and others for encroaching on their traditional lands without consent. The defendants had approved a micro-hydro dam project on the river that six Ulu Geruntum villages directly depended on.

Today, the court ruled that the government in doing so failed in its duty to protect the customary lands of the Orang Asli.

And ordered the state to recognise and gazette these lands as Orang Asli lands.

The Orang Asli were represented by Vinu Kamalananthan, Conrad Lopez and Sarah Tiong Wei Sin. Assisting were Aaron Mathews and Bah Tony.

More details later.

This sighting is close to our heart for obvious reasons: 2 new birds have been sighted feeding on Macaranga gigantea fruit. This brings the total number of birds feeding on this terrific tree, to 44, according to bird watcher Amar-Singh HSS: https://besgroup.org/2024/08/21/new-bird-species-feeding-on-macaranga-gigantea/

I saw two new bird species feeding on the fruit of a Macaranga gigantea (Giant Mahang) that was located at the fringe of primary forest.

For our Aug with , we discussed an integrity study on the Tawai Forest Reserve conducted by the Sabah Forestry Department. It confirmed the uniqueness and importance of this forest reserve. Interestingly, the study was published 7 months after the Sabah state government announced that the Pan-Borneo Highway would dissect this forest.

We also covered 'orangutan diplomacy' and Orang Asli laws.
