Meet the Mansaka Tribe. The Mansaka tribe derives its name from the word "saka," which means farming fields, and "Mansaka" means "people of the clearings." However, Visayan migrants who settled in Mindanao from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s misinterpreted the name as "people who go up" because "saka" means "to go up" in their language. While some have identified the Mansaka as a branch of the Mandaya tribe, the only distinguishing factor between them is their dialect.

Get to know more of Davao Oriental's rich and colorful culture.

"Dagmay" is a handcrafted textile that employs the use of abaca fibers. The production process involves a unique mud-dyeing technique in which tannin-dyed yarns are soaked in iron-rich mud for several days by tribe members. Skilled Mandaya women then weave the fibers into intricate patterns and figures that depict their beliefs and folklore. Human and crocodile motifs are frequently featured in "dagmay", with the latter being a revered creature that regularly appears in their designs. This artistry and skill are passed down from one generation to the next, with each design showcasing the weaver's unique expressions.
