“One of the most anticipated cultural venues in Copenhagen, the 35.000 m2 Royal Arena, opened in February 2017 with four sold out concerts by Metallica. Specially designed for concerts and international level sporting events, this new venue combines two key ambitions: to create an attractive and highly flexible multi-purpose arena that can attract spectators locally as well as internationally, while ensuring that the building’s presence will be a catalyzer for growth for the entire district as well as Copenhagen.

With a podium that offers different public areas for social meetings and daily activities with a warm timber façade allowing spectators to look out and the curious to look in, the arena is designed to catalyse urban life, thereby adding value and fitting into the surrounding neighbourhood.”

“Our proposal aims to support a vision of the future thanks to its striking architectural expression to be part of the collective imagination in the long term, enriching the unique panorama of the district. In line with the buildings that make Casablanca famous for its daring and architectural diversity, this project aims, through its inventive location, to offer spaces that are both unique and qualitative. The "Plein Sud" project takes advantage of this green breath and proposes, through a clear and clear layout, to stimulate its relationship with the neighboring park and the public route crossing it.

The project is part of a “Riad” typology while reinterpreting its architectural expression. The alignment of the facades to the street and the linear facade give the impression of a closed block on the north side and offer privacy in the heart of the block on the south side. The organic morphology of the building takes into account a bioclimatic approach.

Natural continuity from the park to the building which reinforces this idea of living on a hill. Two high points marking the emergence of “the upper town” are judiciously positioned in order to offer a maximum of views to the south and the fewest shadows cast on the building. Thus, the high points of the project are positioned to the north and benefit from a wide opening onto the park.”

“The National Maritime Museum of China is situated in Northern China, outside the city of Tianjin. The museum houses both new and historic maritime items with a focus on celebrating the achievements of Chinese naval exploration throughout the ages.

The museum is fronted by a ‘maritime plaza’ where maritime re-enactments and other open-air events actively engage the museum with the city. The maritime plaza houses a fishing and craft village and a marine botanic garden. It is marked by an observation tower that acts as the museum’s energy plant.

This segmenting of halls and the maritime plaza ensures the museum doesn’t look like one monolithic building.

The architecture is informed by aquatic references, such as anemone, corals and vessels in port. These references are not obvious or ‘tacky’ but instead act as subtle enticements for exploration of experiences within.”

“FXCollaborative was commissioned to design a 31-story, mixed-use office tower for Renaissance Construction Azerbaijan. The tower comprises five cube forms of varying size resting on a podium base that houses a 400-seat auditorium, a boardroom, a cafeteria, and a 60-foot tall winter-garden space. Each volume is separated by green space–promoting access to the outdoors all the way up the tower. Optimizing solar orientation and views, the geometric forms gradually taper and rotate a total of 40 degrees from the base to the top.

The 475,000-square-foot tower includes offices, a formal restaurant, and private one- and two bedroom suites for visiting dignitaries. The tower is topped with a spectacular rooftop garden, affording dramatic views of the old city of Baku. Tefken Construction served as the main contractor for the project.”

“Located midway between the Forbidden City and the Beijing Capital Airport, Poly International Plaza is envisioned as a landmark with an innovative design focused on the user experience and environmental impact.

From its user experience to its environmental impact and construction, the structure sets a new standard for development in the Chinese capital. SOM’s team of interdisciplinary architects and engineers rose to the challenge with a holistic, integrated building design. With a faceted form inspired by traditional Chinese paper lanterns, the tower’s structural system is based on a diagrid. Beyond meeting seismic requirements, this design framework is the cornerstone of the building’s sustainability performance, as well as its distinguishing trait in the Beijing skyline.

Refined since its invention over a century ago, the diagrid is a highly efficient engineering solution: it can be built with fewer materials than other structural systems, and it creates open, column-free interior spaces. The structural engineering team adapted the building technology for Beijing’s climate and seismic conditions, achieving the tower’s curved form with straight structural members.”

“The Jiangsu Grand Theater will feature four auditoriums in total; the concert hall, theater hall, variety hall and opera hall. It will include a large 2,300-seat opera house, a 1,500-seat concert hall and a 1,000-seat drama theatre. It will meet the performing needs of opera, ballet, drama, opera, symphony and large variety performances once construction is completed.

The Jiangsu Grand Theatre undertaking is all the more exciting for the long time it has taken to come to fruition; having been in the minds of the Jiangsu provincial government for more than a decade. The aim of this project is to approach the standard of world-class art and fulfill the growing demand of locals for culturally enriched lifestyles.

This new piece of work comes from a rather famed architectural powerhouse, the East China Architectural Design & Research Institute, which was involved in the construction of the Shanghai World Financial Center and Shanghai Expo Culture Center. The acoustic consultants Marshall Day will work in collaboration with architect ECADI and theatre planner Kunkel to provide an acoustic experience of the highest quality to future theatre goers.”

“All three buildings are constructed as lightweight canopy structures optimized for interior daylight, views, collaboration, experiences and activities.

Our design of the new Bay View campus is the result of an incredibly collaborative design process. Working with a
client as data driven as Google has led to an architecture where every single decision is informed by hard information
and empirical analysis. The result is a campus where the striking dragonscale solar canopies harvest every photon
that hits the buildings; the energy piles store and extract heating and cooling from the ground, and even the naturally
beautiful floras are in fact hardworking rootzone gardens that filter and clean the water from the buildings. All in all, a
campus where front of house and back of house, technology and architecture, and form and function have been fused
into a new and striking hybrid - says Bjarke Ingels, Founder and Creative Director, BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group.”

“MahaNakhon acts as a prototype that generates shared spaces of urban and social interaction and reinstates an explicit responsibility of architectural space towards society as a greater whole.

MahaNakhon, as an embodiment of architectural intentions as well as an example of how architecture can engage the city and surrounding social space to stand as a representation of the city’s aspirations and position as a global city of unique and powerful qualities.

We see architecture as process and the building as a dialogue - between large and small scale, symbolism and activity, the city and its inhabitants, inside and outside. Bangkok is a city of many contradictions - and of an untamable energy.

MahaNakhon dismantles the traditional formula of a seamless, inert, glossy totem, and instead actively engages the city: Its pixilated and carved presence opens and connects to the surrounding urban fabric rather than overpowering it. “

“The form of the tower is based on one of his sculpture, the Turning Torso, where he abstract the form of human movement into a stack of cubes positioned elegantly around a core. In the original sculpture, seven cubes are set around a steel support to produce a spiraling structural effect. In the HSB Turning Torso, the building's form is composed of nine box units, shaped like cubes with triangular tips.

At 190 meters (623 square feet) high, the Turning Torso is the tallest residential building in Sweden and the second tallest residential building in Europe.

The main load-bearing structure is a circular reinforced concrete core, whose center corresponds exactly to the rotation center of the floors.

The entire building is handicapped accessible and features a highly advanced environmental design. Moreover, the engineering technique applied allows for an extraordinarily efficient method of construction.”

“The geometry and composition of the towers is inspired the dramatic surrounding land and seascapes mediating between the steeply rising verdant mountain and the flowing currents of the Malacca Straits. The two towers are generated by the extrusion of a simple and efficient elliptical floorplate whilst the facade is brought to life with the addition of a waveform fin at each level. The varying profile of the ledges is inspired by the ocean currents of the Malacca straits which separate the island from peninsula Malaysia.

The organic rhythm of the tower incorporates a sky garden at level 35 housing two pebble inspired recreational pods. The pods will create a dramatic landmark with spectacular views across the city of Georgetown, the straits of Malacca and Malaysia beyond glowing spectacularly at night creating a beacon visible across the island.

The lushly planted tower garden and podium level facades take advantage of the tropical climate merging the boundaries between naturalistic tropical planting and distinctive flowing manmade geometry generating a distinctive street level presence with a human scale and texture.

“In perfect symmetry, two parallel four-storey high wings define the rectilinear plan and the functional layout of the museum quarters. The museum is organized around a raised courtyard on a one storey high pedestal in which all the functions of the museum are accommodated. From the land and the waterfront side large sweeping staircases lead up to the pedestal. The rectilinear geometry of the façade design, the arcades and the "air-beams" – all clad in a light-grey granite – literally harbours the museum on the lake shore.

The analogy of a ship in a port is developed further in the abstract symbolism of the two "sails" located almost in the middle of the museum square. This masterpiece of engineering allows the two-way curved "sails" to rest on only two base points, approximately 70 m apart. Like a huge fishing net, a pre-tensioned cable net structure clad in glass forms the façade between these two "sails". The enormous cathedral like interior space allows the display of a fully rigged junk.

In the flat coastal topography the Maritime Museum can be spotted for miles due to its expressive silhouette – a feature that will undoubtedly make it one of the most successful landmarks of Lingang New City.”architects

“In 2006, WilkinsonEyre was part of a British-led team that won the design competition for one of the most ambitious cultural projects of recent years – the masterplan for Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay.

Their response was the Cooled Conservatory Complex. The two main conservatory structures are among the largest climate-controlled glasshouses in the world, covering an area in excess of 20,000m², and showcase the flora of those environments most likely to be affected by climate change: in the Flower Dome, the cool-dry Mediterranean zone; and in the Cloud Forest, the cool-wet tropical montane.

The challenge of creating these conservatory environments under glass was a fundamental driver of the design, which was brought about through a uniquely collaborative relationship between WilkinsonEyre and the other members of the multidisciplinary team: masterplanner Grant Associates, structural engineer, Atelier One and environmental specialists Atelier Ten. Each conservatory has a composite structure composed of a gridshell, which works in tandem with an external superstructure of radially arranged, arched steel ribs.”

“The building itself is about 100 m high and will become an iconic symbol for the local environment. The design is inspired by the unique traditional water culture of the riverside district of Doumen. The origin of the initial idea stemmed from the movement of the river currents and a ‘fish leaping from the water’. The fish jumping gesture symbolizes the prosperity and rapid transformation of the city.

For the integration of the tower in the urban promenade concept, the proposal avoids using too much of the plaza area, and leaves the most space for landscape design elements and recreational activities for the public. Moreover there will be cafes and restaurants on the ground floor of the tower-podium to activate the plaza square.

Parametric design modelling tools were used to generate the shape of the tower. The main structure of the tower consists of twelve two-dimensional curves, divided in a second step for the subframe. The sub-frame serves as the holding for the 1400 panels, which will create the iconic ‘fish-scale’ appearance of the tower. Moreover, the panels will provide sun protection for the mid-levels and create an interesting light situation inside the building.”

“The Odunpazari Modern Art Museum is the first modern art museum in Turkey, and is located in the ancient city of Eskisehir. The site which is called Odunpazari (meaning wood bazaar) still has quite a few human-scale two- and three-story wooden buildings from the age of the Ottoman Turks in the surrounding area. We divided the museum into segments that consist of a collection of small boxes with the objective of achieving harmony with this townscape. A feeling unique to wood and warm texture have been achieved by stacking these respective wooden boxes that are made from pieces of lumber.
In addition, fluid space has been configured by stacking lumber pieces with the same dimensions while shifting them slightly, creating a warm and dynamic ambiance not found in conventional art museums.”
