PHS Takes Part in 2nd Catch-Up Fridays
By Serenity S. Pablo

Today, January 19, Pitogo High School once again joined DepEd's nationwide implementation of Catch-Up Fridays, which aimed to foster a culture of reading and essential skills among students.

In line with the Department of Education Memorandum 001, Pitogo High School participated again on the second day of Catch-Up Fridays through Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) Day.

During the activity, each student was required to bring a book with a genre of their choice, giving them the freedom of cultivating their own interests.

The students then wrote a reflection paper with the guidance of the given prompt.

Furthermore, teachers also took part in the reading program, opting to spend their time reading books alongside with the students.

This activity aimed to strengthen the social, foundational, and other essential skills of students, helping them become more proficient writers, critical thinkers, readers, and analysts.

DepEd Launches Catch-Up Fridays
By Serenity S. Pablo

In the goal to address the learning gaps among grade school and high school students caused by the pandemic, the Department of Education began its implementation of "Catch-Up Fridays" on January 12, wherein every Friday of the whole school year is dedicated to reading, values, peace, and health education.

According to DepEd, Catch-up Fridays is a โ€œlearning mechanism intended to strengthen the foundational, social, and other relevant skills necessary to actualize the intent of the basic education curriculum.โ€

As part of the National Reading Program, the Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) initiative gave students opportunity to engage in independent silent reading of their preferred selected material.

In lieu of the regular class program, the usual subjects in classes will be paused and instead be used for enhancing and developing learners' knowledge and skills for reading.

Schools across the country embraced this nationwide program, as students of all levels actively and happily engaged in reading.

Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) shall continue on January 19 and 26.
