The County Government of Machakos on Monday moved to enhance food security following the distribution of 130 tonnes of assorted certified seeds to over 144,000 beneficiaries across Machakos County in addition to donating 254 modern bee hives with honey extracting equipment.

The seeds were flagged off in trucks by Machakos County governor Wavinya Ndeti to 86 drop off points for collection by target beneficiaries who have already been identified by Ward committees.

Speaking at the event held outside the governor's office in Machakos, governor Ndeti warned all involved in the distribution against diverting the seeds to non-targetted beneficiaries.

She said the seeds were expected to yield millions of bags after the harvest season.

"It is unfortunate that our country has been importing food yet we say Agriculture is the backbone of the economy.
I urge our farmers to take advantage and plant the seeds in readiness for a bumper harvest to ensure the realization of 'Chakula Mezani, Pesa Mfukoni' vision,"said governor Ndeti.

The governor also commended 569 enumerators who have been involved in collecting data on farmers in Machakos County in a programme supported by the World Bank which is being implemented in conjunction with the national government.

"In partnership with the national government we are also in the process of concluding a farmer registratioan exercise in order to have reliable data which will in future inform our decision-making and interventions,"she said.

Governor Ndeti announced that some 400 enumerators will be absorbed in the County department of Agriculture after the conclusion of the farmer registration exercise to continue offering services to farmers.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is also supporting the County in drought mitigation at a tune of Sh15 million.

Deputy Governor Francis Mwangangi who was also present at the event said the support towards beef farming had the potential to transform the economic status of many

We're upset by Ruto Government, say Ukambani bishops

Bishops from various denominations in Ukambani region have expressed their disappointment with President William Ruto and the manner in which his administration has handled the Mavoko land crisis.

Addressing the press yesterday in Machakos, the clerics, led by the Archbishop of Africa Brotherhood Church, Timothy Ndambuki declared the demolitions had eroded the confidence the church had with Ruto's Government.

"We promised to work with Ruto but wish to register our disappointment with his administration in the manner that without notice and consultation, has undertaken demolitions of private property, churches and schools," said Ndambuki who's also the chairperson of the National Council of Churches Kenya (NCCK).

The bishops pointed out that the demolitions were a violation of human rights. "This has caused untold suffering to the people and we feel that our mutual understanding, respect, confidence and consultative spirit have been breached," he said.

Governor Wavinya unveils strategy to counter El-Niño

Governor Wavinya Ndeti on Friday declared Machakos County was ready to contain any disasters and emergencies linked to the El-Niño rains whose onset in the region is expected in a few days.

Speaking at her White House office in Machakos where she unveiled the county El-Niño multi-agency preparedness plan, Wavinya said the entire county emergency teams have been adequately trained and equipped to offer rescue and evacuation services to residents who may be affected by effects of heavy rains.

The Governor also revealed some 105 officers have received specialized first responder training in live-saving medical care, emergency operations and pre-hospital care providers. The training also targeted ambulances drivers, emergency dispatchers and fire engine operators.

“As a Government, we have taken it upon ourselves to deploy a proactive approach in dealing with the high possibility of extreme weather conditions, which most likely will trigger the need for emergency response,” she said.

She went on, “El-Niño is bound to hit our region hard and even cause flooding and landslides in some regions within Machakos. As your Governor, I am committing to do whatever it takes to ensure the safety of all residents and that of their property.”

In order to effectively deal with the El-Niño effects, Wavinya said her government had engaged scientists and meteorologists provide accurate forecasts and early warnings. “Their knowledge and expertise will guide us in understanding the potential risks and impacts of El-Niño in our county,” she said.

She also urged residents to observe and maintain high standards of hygiene in order to keep waterborne diseases at bay. “Parents should also ensure the safety of their children and particularly warn them against swimming in swollen rivers and flooded areas. Motorists should also avoid approaching overflowing bridges and swollen river crossings,” Wavinya said.

One CEC-M down as Governor Wavinya cracks the whip:

Machakos Governor, Wavinya Ndeti has sacked the County Executive Committee Member for Education, Philip Mutua Kilonzo from her cabinet.

In a statement released to the press Monday afternoon, the governor said she found Kilonzo incapable of effectively discharging his duties in the capacity of County Executive Committee Member.

“I have reviewed his performance and come to the conclusion that it is untenable for him to continue holding office as CEC-M. This decision has been informed by the need to uphold high standards of service delivery to the people of Machakos County,” the statement which we obtained a copy of, reads in part.

Kilonzo’s docket was immediately re-assigned to Dr Consolata Mutisya, the CEC-M for Roads, Transport and Public Works.

This leaves the Department of Roads, Transport and Public Works without a substantive CEC-M. It is not clear when the governor is likely to fill up the position.

Wavinya’s move to crack the whip on the high-ranking official comes barely a month after executing a cabinet reshuffle that saw several ministers and chief officers moved. Kilonzo had hardly settled in the Department of Education from that of Lands, Housing, Urban Development and Energy where he was initially appointed.

During her recent engagement with residents during public participation forums across the forty Wards, Wavinya pledged to the electorate that she will not hesitate to send home non-performing staff.

“Machakos voters are our bosses and all county government workers including myself are answerable to them. I will not sit and watch as things go wrong. Even if it means somebody going home, so shall it be,” Wavinya is quoted saying.

Governor Wavinya moves to restore order in Machakos CBD

Machakos governor, Wavinya Ndeti made an impromptu tour of Machakos town Tuesday midmorning as she sought to address the ongoing circus pitting hawkers, retailers and county enforcement officers over trading space.

The governor silently drove into the town at around 11 am accompanied by a handful of aides and begun inspecting numerous hawking zones that have been a subject of ugly confrontations.

She toured the Machakos Central Business District (CBD) including Ttot area and business premises adjacent to OLA fuel station before proceeding on foot to the retail market complex.

During her walkabout tour, the governor came face to face with blatant disorder in the town, where traders have been operating in total disregard of county administration's trade policy.

She also interacted freely with various traders and market goers with many of them passionately urging her to solve the current impasse.

In the past few days, county inspectorate officers with the backing of armed police officers have been battling dozens of hawkers who had pitched camp in prohibited zones within the town.

The hawkers argue that it will be unfair to evict them from the CBD without providing an alternative solution for the location of their small businesses.

Majority of them have been accused of instructing entry of customers to licensed business premises while selling similar merchandise as the established outlets.

Wavinya decries rising indiscipline cases in schools

Machakos governor Wavinya Ndeti has challenged parents to get involved in addressing indiscipline cases among school going children.

Speaking at Kivaa Secondary School after donating assorted items following a fire incident that razed down two dormitories, the Governor lamented that cases of indiscipline were to blame for rising incidences of unrests in learning institutions.

"I dare say that indiscipline is the major contributing factor of unrests in schools. Parents and teachers should however do much more to compliment the efforts by the Ministry of Education," she said.

She said exposure to drugs and substance abuse among students had led to erosion of values and disregard to established rules and regulations in schools.

"It is unfortunate that due to bad company, some students have been misled to drugs, substance abuse and sexual immortality," Wavinya said, urging the students to take control of their purpose in life.

Among the items donated by the governor were 70 mattresses, 30 blankets, 70 bed covers and 30 bed sheets.

Wavinya also delivered 30 pairs of uniform to the affected students, 70 boxes and other personal items all valued at approximately sh 500,000.

Governor Wavinya moves to contain clash between hawkers, retailers

Governor Wavinya Ndeti has directed all traders operating around the Machakos retail market area and its environs to stick in their designated sheds.

Addressing a crowd on telephone outside the retail market centre, the governor also pledged to ensure traders without designated selling points will soon be allocated spaces to carry out their preferred businesses.

Wavinya also directed the department of Trade and Industrialization to install floodlights in and outside the retail market complex in order to create more working hours in line with her 24-hour economy clarion call.

"I am directing the concerned departments to ensure flood lighting is installed in market areas in order to allow traders to work longer periods and make more money. My aim is to transform our major urban centres into a 24-hour economy," she said.

She warned those flouting trading regulations which have been agreed upon following consultations with all stakeholders will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

"You (traders) hold the key to the solutions that you are facing and I urge all of you to fully comply with the terms agreed upon between your representatives and my enforcement officers drawn from Trade and Decentralized units departments," she said.

Earlier today, local traders took to the streets to protest the presence of unlicensed traders who have been operating with impunity along major streets.

The traders claimed a section of political leaders were part of the problem and urged the governor to intervene.

Governor Wavinya woos investors to Machakos

Machakos governor, Wavinya Ndeti has urged more investors to consider Machakos, saying the county has all what it takes to support growth of commercial enterprises.

Speaking during the reopening of Coloho Mall in Athiriver Sub-County, Wavinya pointed out that Machakos sits in a strategic position for mega investments, owing to its proximity to the capital city, Nairobi.

"I am excited that Machakos County is at a strategic place for the establishment of a wide range of investment outlets, ranging from housing which makes it "Nairobi’s Bedroom", manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as well as Education among others," she said.

The governor said her administration was keen on exploiting the available opportunities to attract investors and boost their confidence.

This is according to the incoming deputy governor to the guberntorial aspirant in machakos county under wiper ticket Francis Mwangangi Kilonzo who is much concerned about the well-being of kambaland residents due to the overwhelming drought that is being experienced in the lower eastern today due lack of sufficient rainfall for the last two or so years.
