*CONFRONT YOUR DEEP FEARS*

*_For the thing I greatly feared has come upon me, and what I dreaded has happened to me. [Job 3:25]_*

One of the tools the devil and even man himself uses to paralyze progress and high level initiative, is fear. Fear stops correct reasoning, clouds prudent judgement and lowers self-esteem. No great person lives with fear, both of the known and the unknown.

Whatever you fear is likely to happen or take root. Job uttered, *_For the thing I greatly feared has come upon me._* He had no time after one calamity to become composed before another came. When he heard of one misfortune, he naturally dreaded another, and they came on with overwhelming rapidity.

God's word, in countless times, tells us to let go of our fears for a good reason. For fear of failure, many great men have died without becoming great indeed. Some feared they might lose; some feared their ideas may not be welcome; and others feared they might be ridiculed.

The good news is that, *_For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind [2 Tim 1:7]._* Beloved, you have no basis to fear if you're in Christ Jesus. Whatever you want or want to do in this life, just rise up, move forward and possess it.
===========================
*PRAYER*// Dear Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for taking away the basis of my fears through your word. By reason of the spirit of power vested in me, I rise to the occasion and possess whatever is mine. Amen.

*POWER FOR DIVINE SONSHIP*

*_He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name [John 1:11,12]._*

As it were, the Jews found it hard to accept who Jesus said He was, and therefore persuaded the disciples not to preach in the name of Jesus even after His departure. They witnessed the power of God going out of Jesus healing the sick, raising the dead and restoring hope for the hopeless, yet, believed not.

Jesus came to all of the people of the world, as a Savior. However, during His human life, He came specifically to the people of Israel. If any culture on earth should have been able to recognize the Messiah, it ought to have been God's chosen people. But scripture says, they *_did not receive Him [Jn 1:11] ._*

But glory to God! Now the power to become the son of God is vested in that same name, Jesus: *_But as many received Him, to them He gave the right [the power, the opportunity] to become children of God [Jn 1:12]._* Apart from Jesus, *_there is no other name under heaven given among men, by which we must be saved [Acts 4:12]._*

If you don't know this Jesus Christ as your Lord and personal Saviour, this is the hour. The scripture says *_that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved [Rom 10:9]._* If 2021 is gonna be a better year, you've got to be in the boat with the Lord Jesus.
============================
*CONFESSION*// In this day, O God, I open my heart to receive your Gift of Salvation, Christ Jesus as my Lord and personal Saviour. Thank you for writing my name in the Lamb's Book of Life in Jesus'name. Amen.

*TAKE YOUR CYMBAL AND PRAISE*

*_Let my mouth be filled with Your praise And with Your glory all the day [Psalm 71:8]_*

Congratulations to you, our cherished reader for having successfully crossed over into another year of God's glory and God's blessings. David said, *_"If it had not been the LORD who was on our side," Let Israel now say [Psa 124:1]._* It's a joy to see a new year. You ought to take your cymbal, your heart, your voice, and praise.

You must necessarily earmark this day to showcase the praises of the LORD by whose mighty hand and power you were granted life and access into this year. After the Israelites have successfully crossed the Red Sea, *_Moses and the children of Israel sang [Exo 15:1]_* praises to His name.

Hear this truth: *_"If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, When men rose up against us, Then they would have swallowed us alive, When their wrath was kindled against us; Then the waters would have overwhelmed us, The stream would have gone over our soul; [Psa 124:2-4]._*

However and howbeit, *_Blessed be the LORD, Who has not given us as prey to their teeth. Our soul has escaped as a bird from the snare of the fowlers; The snare is broken, and we have escaped [Psa 124:6,7]._* You may not have dollars in your account now but you've got to praise God for the gift of life first. Glorious!
============================
*PRAYER://* Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me should bless His holy name. For the LORD is good and His mercy, His love, His affection endures forever. Amen.

*ENTERING INTO 2021: HIS PROMISES OR YOUR PROMISES?*

*_When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you. [Isaiah 43:2]_*

Whenever you get the opportunity to interact with God, don't rush into making many promises, rather, hold Him to His promises. Instead of promising God you'll do this or that, ask for the fulfilment of His promises concerning what you intend to do: *_For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen [2Co 1:20]._*

No year has been without ups and downs and 2021 will not be different. However, God has a sure promise concerning His children: *_When you pass through the waters, I will be with you,...When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned._* Indeed, in the midst of the fires and waters of Corona, He's fulfilled His promise.

There are many times you told God, "Forgive me Lord for this sin. I promise you not to commit this sin again, please Lord." And just after that prayer the feebleness of man shows up again. The truth is, you can of your own self work no deeds of righteousness. Rather, allow yourself to the leading of Spirit into all righteousness.

Beloved, as you go before the LORD tonight in prayer, don't rush into making many promises to Him. Go before God, *_being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform [Rom 4:21]._* You need to get born again by believing in Jesus' finished work on the cross to qualify for God's promises.
============================
*PRAYER*// It's of certainty that God is not a man that He should lie concerning His promises. I activate every promises of God concerning my destiny in 2021 in the Mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

*ENTERING INTO 2021: SET REALISTIC GOALS AND PURSUE*

*_The plans of the diligent lead surely to plenty, but those of everyone who is hasty, surely to poverty. [Proverbs 21:5]_*

One thing that's going to characterize "crossover night" services tomorrow is "new year resolutions." People are going to set new goals, set new rules and promise hell. You see, it's not just about saying, "I will do this, I will do that, or I will not cross this or that line." You must set achievable goals.

Pay attention to the memory verse. It says, *_the PLANS OF THE DILIGENT lead surely to plenty [Pro 21:5]._* Diligence refers to _the conscientiousness in paying proper attention to task; giving the degree of care needed in a given situation._ If you lack diligence, your plans may come to naught.

A realistic goal is one which is achievable in the face of available or hoped-for resources; one which is time-bound and one which is enticing to begin. After setting the goals, pursue, don't sleep. Seek for counsel regarding the plans: *_Without counsel, plans go awry, but in the multitude of counselors they are established [Pro 15:22]._*

Whatever your goal may be, first examine it’s purpose and then look at it through God's word. If we will consult the Lord before and in the midst of our goal planning, seeking His guidance, submitting to His will, I believe that we'll be amazed at the destination of our goals. Glory!
===========================
*PRAYER*// Dear Lord Jesus, I ask for your wisdom in drafting my plans for the coming year, and I seek that you endue me with the spirit of diligence and prudence to execute those plans in your name. Amen.

*ENTERING INTO 2021: DEAL WITH ROOTED BITTERNESS*

*_...looking diligently lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; LEST ANY ROOT OF BITTERNESS SPRINGING UP CAUSE TROUBLE, and by this many become defiled; [Hebrews 12:15]._*

Yesterday, the word of God taught us that there's no need worrying about what didn't work for us in the past. Instead, *_let your eyes look straight ahead [Pro 4:25]._* It is important to also deal with the feeling of deep and bitter anger and ill-will you have against those who might have treated you badly in 2020.

According to our anchor scripture, when bitterness springs up, it causes trouble and defile (pollutes, stains the mind) of those who harbour it: *_...lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled._* There are a couple of reasons why you must uproot bitterness from your heart, now.

Bitterness not only causes symptoms of trauma like sleeplessness, fatigue, and lack of libido, it can in the long term lead to low self-confidence, negative personality shifts, and an inability to have a healthy relationship with both God and men.

What then must you do? Destroy the foundation of bitterness in you which is unforgiveness. On the number of times we must forgive, *_Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven. [Matt 18:22]._* Forgive those who have hurt you and be healed of every bitterness.
==========================
*CONFESSION*// Dear Lord Jesus I thank you for your word of healing received into my spirit this morning. As we move steadily into the new year, I let go of every bitterness in my heart by forgiving those who have hurt me. Amen.

*_LEVELS OF FAITH: WEAK FAITH_*

*_And not being WEAK IN FAITH, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old), and the deadness of Sarah's womb (Romans 4:19)._*

Yesterday, we studied about the first level of faith called "No Faith". It was indicated that it's impossible to please God with no faith. Today, we move to another level of faith called weak faith. A weak faith is a deficient faith, lacking the supernatural strength to yield results. Having a weak faith equals having no faith because both can't make any condition better.

Despite the seemingly unfruitful realisation of the thirty-year old promise, Abram became not weak in faith: *_And not being weak in faith, he did not consider his own body, already dead (since he was about a hundred years old)._* So what are the characteristics of a weak faith? Weak faith gives more attention to the problem; it looks at the present; and it simply sees defeat in everything.

When you're weak in faith, you're likely to have little or no results no matter how long you pray. It's not about praying long, it's about believing long. People who are weak in faith always believe "if it didn't work out for them, it's not likely to work out for me". They say to themselves, "if even those with high qualifications have failed the interview, how much more me? "

Child of God, don't grow weak in faith. When you focus too much on what didn't work for others , what didn't work for your parents, and what didn't work for your friends, your faith will grow weak. However, don’t be discouraged if you think you lack faith or your faith is weak. Cultivate the habit of a daily meditation on God's word, and your faith will subconsciously grow.
========================
*PRAYER*// Thank you Father for your infallible word this morning. As I begin to intentionally feed on your word day and night, my faith is strengthened to overcome every hurdle.

*_THE MECHANICS OF FAITH: LAYING FOUNDATIONS_*

*_Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony [Hebrews 11:1,2]._*

Faith could be described as the most vital prerequisite that initiates the relationship between humanity and divinity. Though humans have not successfully conducted any clinical test for the proof of God in the lab, we simply believe He is: that's just faith. Hear this: it's faith that both initiates and sustains our relationship with our Father who is in Heaven.

It's therefore important to understand the technicalities of conceiving, sustaining and growing your faith and this is what I have termed as _the mechanics of faith._ The book of Hebrews offers a prominent definition of faith: *_SUBSTANCE of things hoped for, the EVIDENCE of things not seen._* Substance and evidence are what the average person needs to believe something would work.

So, faith is enough evidence that you'll surely succeed. Hallelujah! What's the primary source of faith? God's word! *_So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God [Rom 10:17]._* Only the word of God produces faith; any other thing produces confidence. Someone can't have faith for you. You need your own faith: *_without faith it is impossible to please God [Heb 11:6]._*

Jesus praised those who had faith and rebuked those who had no faith. Having understood the essence of faith, *_the apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith." [Luk 17:5]._* As I take you through the mechanics of faith, you may want to pray same; "increase my faith, Lord." In this series, you'll learn about the levels of faith, the hills and valleys of faith, and when faith is unapproved.

*PRAYER*// Thank you Lord Jesus for your word which has already sparked faith inside my spirit. By this faith, I move all my impossibilities into the realm of possibilities. Amen.

*_ELIJAH, THE PERFECT PRAYER WARRIOR_*

*_Elijah was just as human as we are, and for three and a half years his prayers kept the rain from falling [James 5:17 CEV]._*

When Elijah is named, one thing that comes to mind is prayer. He was mighty in prayer. In this concluding devotion on prayer, I want us to see how the principles we have learned in the other messages apply to Elijah.

Elijah was a righteous man:When Ahab and Jezebel had turned Israel away from the worship of the one true God to the worship of Baal; when people had compromised their faith in God; when sin and demon worship were everywhere, Elijah appeared in Israel, completely separate from their compromise and wholly devoted to God and his service.

Elijah had tremendous Faith in God:He dared the prophets of Baal to challenge the ability of his God: *_"And you call upon the name of your god, and I will call upon the name of the LORD, and the God who answers by fire, he is God." And all the people answered, “It is well spoken" [1 Kings 18:24]._*

Elijah loved God:One time he lamented, *_“I have been very zealous for the LORD God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life" [1 Kings 19:10]._*

The God of Elijah answers prayers:
Elijah prayed, *_"Answer me, O LORD, answer me, that this people may know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back" [1 Kings 18:37]._* Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. *_THE GOD WHO ANSWERS PRAYER_*

*_Then you call on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord ; and the God who answers..., He is God.” So all the people answered and said, “It is well spoken [1Kings 18:24 NKJV]._*

We concluded in our previous devotion that the author's right standing (righteousness) with God influences the power his prayer can generate. Like we said previously, as far as the effectiveness of prayer is concerned, the AUTHOR and the OBJECT of prayer form the two sides of the same coin. Let's explore the other side of the coin, which is the OBJECT of prayer. The OBJECT of your prayer is the god to whom you make your prayers.

Some pray to angels, others pray to ghosts (ancestors), heavenly bodies such as sun, moon, and stars; others still pray to trees, stones, water bodies, creeping things, carved images, and demons (gods) like the prophets of Baal. From the text above, we see Elijah challenging the prophets of Baal to pray to their god while he also does same to his God to see one who's god shall answers his prayer by burning their sacrifice with fire from above. And the god who could do so shall indeed be God in Israel.

So it happened that, after cutting themselves, shouting, dancing, crying for several hours, the God of the prophets of Baal didn't answer. When Elijah's turn came, his God answered him in no time with a mighty fire from heaven which consumed the sacrifice with the stones and a pool of water which surrounded the sacrifice. We conclude therefore that, for prayer to be effective, it must be prayed to the right God.

The God who answers prayers is the God Paul described as *_the God who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think,..[Eph. 3:20]._* I recommend this God to you. He is the God of Elijah, the creator of the heavens and the earth. Who later became a human, Jesus Ch

*_THE PRAYER OF A RIGHTEOUS PERSON_*

*_The earnest prayer of a RIGHTEOUS PERSON has great power and produces wonderful results (James 5:16 NLT)_*

The prayer that produces great power and wonderful results is the prayer of a righteous person. It means that, that which determines the power of a particular prayer is the AUTHOR of the prayer himself. The one doing the praying has a lot to do with what the prayer can do. The book of Acts records some spectacular miracles that were wrought by the prayer of the apostles.

The crippled leaped to their feet, demons fled, the dead were raised, prison chains were literally broken. Prison doors were literally opened with earthquakes in response to the prayer of the apostles. The same book also records the massacre of the sons of Sceva by the demon possessed man when they tried to exorcise him in the same name Paul uses. Showing clearly that the author of the prayer has a lot to do with the potency of his or her prayer.

The person whose prayer produces much results is not the one who necessarily fasts a lot, or has the longest, loudest, and emotional prayer but one who has a right standing with God, the righteous person. The one who has first of all been Justified by the blood of Jesus. Not only that. The one who also ABIDES in that grace. The one who SANCTIFIES himself. Read the texts below and think about them carefully:

The Lord detests the sacrifice of the *_WICKED_* , but he delights in the prayers of the *_UPRIGHT [Proverbs 15:8 NLT]._* When you lift up your hands in prayer, I will not look. Though you offer many prayers, I will not listen, *_for your hands are covered with the blood of innocent victims [Isa 1:15 NLT]._* *_Stay joined to me and let my teachings become part of you_.* _Then you can pray for whatever you want, and your prayer will be answered [John 15:7 CEV]._

*_WHY PRAYER GO UNSWERED: THE PROBLEM OF WRONG ATTITUDES_*

*_And He (God) gives grace generously. As the Scriptures say, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble [James 4:6 NLT]_*

We identified prayerlessness and wrong motives as two of the reasons for the lack of power as far as prayer is concerned. Today, we will identify the third reason for lack of results in prayer. It is the attitude we put up in prayer.

Luke records a story Jesus told to his disciples in Luke 18:10-14. He said, “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood *and prayed thus with himself,* God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’

And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, *_be merciful to me a sinner!_* Before we look at the outcome of their prayers, I want you to take special notice of their attitudes before God in prayer. The Pharisee was proud and self centered while the tax collector was humble and God centered.

Now the verdict of their prayer. Jesus continued, "I tell you, this man (the tax collector) went down to his house justified (answered) rather than the other (Pharisee). He added, for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” God gives grace generously. Yet, as far as prayer is concerned, attitude of the heart, is sine qua non to prevailing with God.

*_WHY PRAYER GO UNANSWERED: THE PROBLEM OF WRONG MOTIVATION_*

*_And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong—you want only what will give you pleasure [James 4:3 NLT]_*

We identified the first reason for lack of results in prayer as prayerlessness. We have pointed out that prayerlessness is as a result of ignorance of the methods of God and pride. Today, we will identify the second reason for lack of results in prayer. It is the motivation for praying.

One of the leading causes of lack of power in our prayer lives is praying with the wrong motivation. Praying aims. Remember that, God weighs the heart. He looks at the heart: *_For man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart [1Sam. 16:7]._*

Wrong motivations in prayer include:
Praying out of duty. They pray only to check prayer off their daily schedule. Such prayer won't have any power. Even though the Lord commands us to pray, He does not desire us to pray out of obligation but love. For we are not slaves but sons and daughters of God.

Praying out of show (hypocrisy). They want to show their parents, spouses, friends and colleagues that they are prayerful. This is typical of the Pharisees. Jesus warned, *_And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray .... that they may be seen (approved) by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward [Matt 6:5]._*

Others still pray motivated by worldliness and self centeredness. They pray so that they can spend the results on their lusts. They pray for marriages, miracles, education, money, cars, etc just to satisfy their greed for achieving. James calls such people adulterers; friends of the world and enemies of God. Their motivation is wrong. Their prayer has no power to accomplish anything with God.
============================
*PRAYER*// Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit, help me to train my motives in prayer.

*_WHY PRAYER GOES UNANSWERED: THE PROBLEM OF PRAYERLESSNESS_*

*_You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it [James 4:2 NLT]_*

In our previous devotional, we pointed out that a careful study of scripture also shows that, every command to pray promises answer (result). Therefore if we are not seeing the accomplishments of our prayers in our lives and ministries, then there may be the need to sit back and reflect on what we may be doing wrong.

Apostle James identifies the first reason for lack of results in prayer as prayerlessness. *_You do not have because you do not ask (Jms. 4:2b)._* Most Christians have the tendency of equating desire for the power of God in their situation to praying. That is ignorance. They excuse themselves with the fact that God already knows what they need. Hence they sit on the fence waiting for a miracle to happen.

In His omniscience and omnipotence, God still requires His people who want His help to pray to him. He said, *_call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know (Jer. 33:3)._* Others do not pray because they think they can accomplish their desires by their human efforts. That is pride. James says they fight, war and murder yet they are not able to obtain what they want.

To these people, the words of the Lord to Zerubabbel applies perfectly: *_Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ (Zech. 4:6)._* God wants us to willingly yield our lives to him by calling to him in prayer. It is a system He has put in place. Once it is set in motion, desires shall begin to be fulfilled. Prayer shall begin to have power and accomplishments.
