Indeed the Editorial and Publishing CDS group of the NYSC makurdi, are Pace Setters, as exactly one week after their major workshop on Post-Harvest Losses :Challenges, work done so far and Way Forward, they are still making headlines, as the renowned Daily Trust News Paper has also published its news on it.
The CDS group has indeed received loud applaud for having the initiative of looking into a major issue in the state.

This has won them a major partnership deal with the institution known as, CEFTER, which deals with managing post harvest losses.

The amazing part of the partnership is that, Corps members and CDS groups that wish to carry out projects on Post harvest Losses or agricultural related projects, can confidently work up to them (CEFTER) as a platform has already been made to accommodate Youth Corpers.
This is indeed good news to the NYSC scheme, Makurdi.

Below is the link to the published news of the Daily Trust News Paper

Mr. Agida Wisdom, the secret brain behind the mind blowing workshops that have been enacted by the Editorial and Publishing CDS group in the past few months.
He believes strongly in excellence and frowns badly against mediocrity.
He believes also that the reward of hardwork is more work.
He was the anchor, alongside beautiful miss Jennifer, of the Post Harvest Losses one day Workshop.

The second speaker, Mr. Dav Raphael Vaerumun, the State Desk Officer, Farmers and Agriculture Organization, Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Makurdi, also had a beautiful delivery

*He started by defining the key terms stating that post harvest losses is the degradation in both quality and quantity of crop within the period of harvest and
consumption
* If you don’t tackle post harvest losses, no matter the increase in production post harvest losses increase also
*Post harvest handling which is the sum total of the activities done after harvest to ensure the edibility and security of agricultural produces
*Shelf life: period the crops stays in an acceptable quality
*If we don’t handle PHL, we will never have what’s called food security. Increase production+Post Harvest Handling leads to food security

Factors that leads to PHL
*Low level of agricultural extension service
*Lack of easy access to modern effective post harvest technology
*low level of agro-processing industries
*Insufficient media promotions of locally processed products
* Poor handling after harvest
*Lack of easy access to market
*Low level of organized value chain development

Recommendation
*Government and non government organization should facilitate farmers access to modern post harvest technology in Benue State
*Government should recruit and sustain agricultural extension services in the state
*More resources should be put into value chain development
*Attention should be given to the provision of organizational storage system

THE EDITORIAL AND PUBLISHING CDS OF BENUE STATE AT IT AGAIN

Are you aware of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act passed into law on the 28 of may, 2011 and what this law is all about?

This law is an act that gives the public right to freely secure or request for any information from government institutions, agencies, and organizations. This act was enacted basically to foster transparency and accountability in government agencies and it is very much an active law.

It is in this light of creating a public awareness on the effectiveness of the law however, that the Editorial and Publishing CDS arm of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Benue State, Makurdi, on Thursday, the 21st of November 2019, stormed the streets of Makurdi in groups, sensitizing the community on the Freedom Of Information (FOI) Act that was passed into law in 2011.

The different groups enlightened the people on their rights to securing information from government parastatals, showing them the procedures to follow in order to secure these information as they have a right to be informed.
The corps members further made the public realise that some information could be however be quite confidential and thus, can’t be released, and if The information is sensitive, the organization are to write, explaining why they cannot release such information to The public.
The corps members further told them that in a situation whereby a petition is been denied and not on the basis of it being sensitive, the organisation denying such information must profer reasons also as to why the information is being withheld. In a situation whereby reasons are not given, the person laying the complaint could actually sue such organisation for failing to give out the information requested of them and why. The public were again made to understand that these information can be acquired within a short period of one to seven (1-7) working days at most. And if the organisation cannot meet up with the stipulated response period, they have to write back requesting more time frame to meet up the request.

The act also clearly states that if any organization has an incorrect record of you, you have the right to go and request that such information be readjusted.
Let’s not be charged wrongly.

This CDS group did not only limit their exercise to the people that owned public offices they also took it upon themselves to engage those on the streets as they believe everyone has a right to be informed.

Our sincere appreciation goes to the ministry of Agriculture, Makurdi, for granting us access and great audience and also to the inhabitants for welcoming and giving us good listening ears.
Also, to everyone that came out for the workshop, we appreciate your effort too.
