Welcome back to another teaser time from My Favorite Trees β€” and our last! 😭 The final episode is right around the corner, so I've taken the time to tie up some loose ends and line up a whole slew of deserving trees that *almost* missed their time under our spotlight. In fact, many of the trees I talk about tomorrow are ones suggested by you, dear listeners, including several species across the southern hemisphere. 🌏 That's right β€” I'm finally making amends for my northern hemisphere bias. 🌎

Take the Araucaria group, for example. You might recognize some names like the Norfolk Island Pine and the Monkey Puzzle Tree, but what's in a name, truly? Enjoy the teaser for what's to come, and be sure to tune in tomorrow for the big finale. πŸŽ‰ Thank you all so much for supporting My Favorite Trees! πŸ’šπŸŒ³

Happy Arbor Day, everyone! Since the 1870s, we've been setting aside a day where the focus is all about treesβ€”planting them and learning more about them. Today, make sure to give thanks to quiet forest giants for all the roles they play in our lives. From shade to carbon sequestration to homes for critters and resources for us, it's hard to imagine a world without trees. 🌳🏑🌲

If you'd like to learn more about the history of Arbor Day, be sure to check out Episodes 23 and 48 of My Favorite Trees, available at mftpodcast.com/episode-23-the-cottonwood-and-arbor-day and mftpodcast.com/episode-48-the-150th-arbor-day, or any podcast platform of your choice. Now, enjoy this picture of the first trees I ever planted, right around 10 years ago. What trees are you thankful for? πŸ’š

Happy Tree Tuesday! Though this isn't our last tree Tuesday together, today is our last adventure into a species-specific topic. πŸ’š Join me for the 99th episode of My Favorite Trees as we look at the Elderberry, representing the final month of the Celtic Ogham Tree Calendar. It's a time of endings, but it's also a time of beginnings, and as always, it's a time to be finding and hugging your favorite tree. The Elderberry has historically been loved for its medicinal uses, but there's so much more to discover. πŸƒ

Listen now on your podcast app of choice or find it at mftpodcast.com/episode-99-the-elderberry. And remember to send me any questions, comments, or curiosities to highlight in my upcoming Q&A episode! You can comment on Facebook, message on Instagram, or even send me an email at [email protected]. Can't wait to hear from you β€” happy listening! 🌳

Tomorrow brings us the last topic episode of My Favorite Trees. πŸŒ… Appropriately, we'll be covering the final tree in the Celtic Ogham Tree Calendar: the Elderberry. Although it may seem strange to highlight a New Year's tree in April, we're embracing the transitional space, entering a new month, watching the seasonal weather change, and giving us time to reflect on our past in anticipation of what is to come. The Elderberry carries that very idea with it. 🌳

Have a listen to the teaser for a taste of tomorrow's episode! For those extra curious, you can find an early release already out on my Patreon. ✨ And to all of my listeners, don't forget to send me your Qs so I can give my As in our upcoming Q&A! Feel free to reach out here on Facebook, Instagram, my website, or via email at [email protected]. See you tomorrow! πŸ’š

Happy Tree Tuesday! Spring has already sprung for many, but the first signs of the season have only just emerged in southern New England. 🌀️ Change is in the air, a theme undeniably related to our tree of choice next week when we explore the Elderberry. There's a lot to look forward to in what will be my final topic episode for My Favorite Trees β€” but don't think I'm completely done yet. πŸ’š

I'm planning two important community-driven episodes to release later next month: a Q&A and a medley of trees that you may feel have been missing from the show. 🎢 🌳 Please comment or message me with questions about the podcast, trees, me, my cats, my beautiful fiance editing this social post, or anything else as well as your tree suggestions.

In the meantime, a new Tree Walk video is out now on my Patreon, where I revisit the Middlesex Fells Reservation, looking at what tree flowers have started to bloom and how their timing compares to last year. Join me at our Treehuggers tier to watch all of these videos at the link below, or start a 7-day free trial to get a taste of the adventure. 🌼 Thanks for stopping by!

Happy Tree Tuesday! In our latest episode, we revisit the Spruce tree β€” a tree that is not necessarily my favorite. 😲 I admit: I'm not a fan of pokey trees, and Spruces love to poke. But, since my Sitka Spruce episode came out in 2021, I've gotten the chance to learn more about these impressive species and how they contribute to our daily lives, from Alaskan breweries to Bonsai art in East Asia. 🍺🌲

Join me as we take another, deeper look at the Spruce, where I even reflect on what Spruce I *do* like. πŸ’š Listen now on your podcast app of choice or at mftpodcast.com/episode-98-the-spruce-revisited. And don't forget β€” leave a comment with any questions you might have for the upcoming Q&A or send me an email at [email protected]. 😎 Enjoy!

Get ready to revist the Spruce tree! These conifers are easily recognized by their green needles and towering heights, as seen with the festive Norway Spruce and the fast-growing Sitka Spruce. Contrary to what the podcast name might suggest, though, I actually have mixed feelings about Spruces. They're... not exactly my favorite. 🀷 Curious to find out why? 🧐

Check out the teaser for a hint of what I *really* think about these evergreens before all the juicy details come out tomorrow. But, if you're eager to stir the tree pot with me, you can find the episode already out on my Patreon, where you can also enjoy some Tree Walks with Thomas adventures and look at pictures of my cats. πŸ’š See you soon! 🌳

Happy Tree Tuesday! Get ready for another trip back in time β€” to My Favorite Trees in 2021, that is. Next week, we'll be revisiting the Spruce tree, expanding on when we first looked at the Sitka Spruce back in episode 12. I've been wanting to take another look at Spruce trees ever since I worked in Alaska, but I'll admit right now: Spruce trees are not, in fact, my favorite trees. 🀯 Stay tuned to find out more soon!

Over on Patreon, join me for a Tree Walk with Thomas around the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University. This beautiful day, even in windy New England, is full of spring potential to admire. 🌸 Check it out with a 7-day free trial period, and feel free to reach out with any questions for my upcoming Q&A. Happy Tree Tuesday! Come with us to Japan as we journey through its evolution in history, from the country's time of isolation to its vibrant global presence today. At the center of all this change sits the Sacred Trees of Kiso: the Nezuko, the Asunaro, the Sawara Cypress, the Hinoki Cypress, and the Koyamaki. There are plenty of stories to juggle between the five, but the threads that bind the Sacred Trees of Kiso together are worth following deep into the lush Kiso Valley β€” so let's go! πŸƒβ›°οΈ

Find the latest episode from My Favorite Trees on your podcast app of choice or at mftpodcast.com/episode-97-the-sacred-trees-of-kiso. And if you have any burning questions, about trees or me or the podcast, please reach out with a message, comment, email, or carrier pigeon, so I can spotlight you in my upcoming Q&A. Welcome back to another teaser from My Favorite Trees! Tomorrow, we'll be learning all about the Five Sacred Trees of Kiso: the Nezuko, the Asunaro, the Sawara Cypress, the Hinoki Cypress, and the Koyamaki. These trees have earned religious importance over Japan's history, but even without that impressive background, their biological nuances are of great interest. Take the Koyamaki, also known as the Japanese Umbrella Pine, I mention in the teaser β€” it promises to be a fun one. πŸ¦–πŸŒ³

Remember that gnarly Mulberry tree I shared with you last week? The Chinese Mulberry that sits outside Truro Vineyards in Cape Cod? As it turns out, this beautiful specimen has quite the story to tell. Friend of the show Doug Still spotlights this heritage tree in his most recent episode of This Old Tree Radio Show and Podcast / , diving into the history behind Captain Atkins Hughes, a seafaring adventurer from the 1800s and the original planter of the tree. β›΅πŸŒ³

Follow the mystery of "The Mariner and the Mulberry," unraveling who this sea captain was and how he ended up planting this Mulberry that continues standing strong today. Listen on your podcast app of choice or at thisoldtree.show/episode-details/the-mariner-and-the-mulberry-s2-ep-5. Happy Tree Tuesday! Back in the Arborvitae episode, I briefly mentioned the Japanese Arborvitae, also known as the Nezuko. Next week, we're going to take more time to explore that species and more as we learn about the Five Sacred Trees of Kiso: the Nezuko, the Asunaro, the Sawara Cypress, the Hinoki Cypress, and the Koyamaki. The history of importance behind these trees is truly remarkable, representative of Japan's evolution as a country. Stay tuned!

25/02/2024

Take a look at this old, old Mulberry. When Doug Still from This Old Tree Radio Show and Podcast / was showing me around Cape Cod, I met this old-timer just outside the Truro Vineyards. I don't know about you, but when I think of a gnarly tree, this is exactly what I picture. 🏞️

There was a placard on the tree identifying it only as a Chinese Mulberry, though what exactly that means isn't clear. There are a couple species native to China that could have been introduced here, like Morus alba or even Broussonetia papyrifera β€” though the latter is not usually considered a "true" Mulberry. I've done some digging, but for right now, it remains a mysterious Mulberry. πŸ”πŸŒ³

Want to learn more about these east Asian trees? Check out my most recent episode to hear how both of these Chinese Mulberry candidates contribute to textile production β€” in entirely different ways! Happy Tree Tuesday! Who's a fan of nursery rhymes? Whether it's a bridge falling down or visually impaired mice running around, there's always a bit of creepy to the innocuous verses, and the one centered 'round the Mulberry Bush is no exception. As it turns out, though, the Mulberry is far more bizarre than its rhyme gives it credit for, in large part due to its leaves being a favorite snack of silkworms. πŸͺ± Oh, boy, another fun relationship between trees and insects to describe! Did I mention that these plants were in the same family as Figs?

Start getting excited for an up close look at the Mulberry and the significant developments to trade these fashion-forward trees helped create. πŸ‘—πŸŒ³ In the meantime, check out my Patreon for some behind the scenes bonus footage of my recent excursion to the Tupelo groves Cape Cod with Doug Still of This Old Tree Radio Show and Podcast / for an excursion into Cape Cod. Happy Tree Tuesday! Today, we are all about the Myrtle tree β€” specifically Myrtus communis, or the Common Myrtle, and not any fakers (looking at you, Crape Myrtle πŸ‘€). This beautiful, fragrant tree is popular as an ornamental decoration, star-shaped flowers brightening up things to help signify the coming spring. Yet, there is a lot more to the Myrtle than its scent and petals, like its importance in Jewish holidays and customs β€” which is good timing, seeing as how the Jewish Tree New Year, Tu B'Shvat, starts tomorrow night. πŸŽ‰πŸŒ³

And the Myrtle continues to represent to different things to many faiths and cultures, from protection to romance. Happy Tree Tuesday! Out now from My Favorite Trees is our second Forester Spotlight, showcasing Richard St. Barbe Baker, a groundbreaking environmentalist who helped bring reforestation efforts to a global scale. When establishing Men of the Trees to improve land conservation, Baker started with just 50 members in Kenya. Today, the organization, now known as the International Tree Foundation, has over 100 chapters around the world β€” all dedicated to the planting and protection of trees. 🌲

Today, this environmental vision has grown to be so much more. 🌲

Happy Tree Tuesday, and welcome to 2024! πŸŽ‰ We're starting the new year off with another Forester Spotlight, this time looking at Richard St. Barbe Baker. As a biologist and botanist, Baker was a trailblazer when it came to reforestation efforts, forming in 1922 the Men of the Trees, an African grassroots effort that would grow to become the first international environmental group independent from government oversight. Today, the organization is known as the International Tree Foundation and still going strong with Baker's reforestation mission. 🌲 Stay tuned for more next week!

In the meantime, on my Patreon for my latest Tree Walk video, I finally venture up to Maine to visit the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge. Happy *actually* Tree Tuesday! Out now is the newest episode from My Favorite Trees, keeping holiday celebrations going as we learn about one of the most loved evergreen conifers: the Fir tree! πŸŽ„ Right now, any number of Fir species are likely taking up space in living rooms around the world right now, covered in twinkling lights and shiny baubles, but as it turns out, there's a lot more than meets the eye when it comes to these wintry icons. β˜ƒοΈ Like how it often symbolizes a different holiday than you may expect over in Russia? Or how certain parts of the trees can be, uh, "popped"? 🎈

Okay, so maybe the story regarding that latter fact is kind of awful and you may hate me for it, but hey, Christmas was yesterday and that means Santa isn't looking as closely now, right? Right?? πŸŽ…

Check out the episode now while you're gearing up for New Years, available on your podcast app of choice or at mftpodcast.com/episode-92-the-fir! And please direct all hate mail regarding popping the Fir to [email protected]. 😬 Enjoy! πŸ’š
