Did you know that Diva is Italian for goddess? And Divo & Diva are used to describe admirable people. Back in the day female opera singers were called diva as a compliment.

People of ill intent with loud voices/large platforms can take a positive term and turn it into the complete opposite and vice versa (e.g. Google “picnic”)

That’s why etymology is so important. It benefits us all when we stay critical of what we see, hear, believe and consume.

🌸STORYTIME🌸

As a young girl I was often called a diva - the derogatory term - for doing things “out of the ordinary”. e.g. I brought wet wipes to a scout camp, where we were staying outdoors for 12 days, with no running water, toilets or electricity.

And even in my 9-5 I would get the same remark. e.g. I step into the office with a fancy coat and high heels.

I honestly think that being Congolese adds a lot to my Divaness - in spaces that don’t encourage people to stand out as individuals - and I love it. Big, bold and beautiful is often the way of life in my culture and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Alllll this to say: Diva’s should be celebrated like they were always supposed to. 💕

It’s a blessing when those two align and you see it in your everyday actions and interactions with others. I have a big heart and probably even a bigger mouth. So, it’s always been hard for me to NOT react or be agitated when I see things I dislike, whether that is behavior in my friends, family or others.

I understand now how peaceful life can be when you just decide to see everything, hear everything but not speak on everything.

Being honest is one thing, but exhausting yourself in the process just because you feel like otherwise you’re not being truthful - and therefore not loving - in regards to others, is another thing.

So yes, I love y’all but if your behavior bothers me I will now, most likely just say : “Ok! 😊” and keep it moving.

Life is short and I have a jet to buy. 🌍

PS Unless it’s about inequality of course, I will never be silent or silenced about what truly matters.
