Valorant is a popular 5-vs-5 tactical first-person shooting game developed by Riot Games. Launched last June 2, 2020, the game has built up an extensive player base and a thriving esports community. Valorant integrates features from other first-person shooter games with distinctive character skills in order to create a unique gaming experience. In line with the celebration of the feast of Cagayan de Oro’s patron saint, Virtual Grounds Esports organized the first-ever LAN tournament for the said video game in the city titled “Valorant Higalaay Tournament 2023”. There were a total of 8 registered teams battling against each other in a double-elimination format best of 1 series. The winner will take home the first-ever title trophy and 5,000 pesos worth of Virtual Grounds Vouchers.

The 2-day tournament was kicked off with six games played on the first day, with four games streamed on the Virtual Grounds Esports official page. The two lower bracket games on the other hand, were not streamed. Team Bunal and WAKAA leave the tournament after losing their lower bracket games, while the other six teams advance to the second round. The first day’s games all nearly had a 9-3 scoreline in the first half, with the Mandem vs WAKAA game being the only exception with an 11-1 scoreline. Mandem also finished their game 13-1, crushing their opponents without retort.

The second day started with the upper bracket round 2 games, with Cookies and Cream and Mandem advancing to the upper bracket finals. Mandem clutches their ticket to the Grand Finals from Cookies n Cream, winning the game 13-8. CnC tried crawling their way back to the Grand Finals, but JIYUNATICS, straight from the lower bracket quarterfinals and defeated CnC with a score of 13-8, proceeded to the Grand Finals and rematch against Mandem for the trophy, prizes, and glory.

Mandem and JIYUNATICS face off on Split as the first map on a best-of-3 Grand Finals format. Mandem quickly ended the match 13-3 to proceed to the second map, Bind. JIYUNATICS comes back and takes a point after a grueling 13-11 win to force a third map in Pearl. Both teams fight tooth and nail to try and achieve supremacy above the other, winning rounds back and forth. This ends when Mandem takes a step up and beats JIYUNTIC 13-10 to claim victory over all, taking home the trophy, Virtual Grounds Esports gift cards and the title Valorant Higalaay Tournament Champion 2023. The highlight of this best-of-three series would be the undisputed tournament MVP “LAMBORGHINI PEEK”, a.k.a. Former XCD Player “Sang” who garnered 45 kills on the third and final map of the game. Aside from this achievement, the player has been consistently performing at the top in each of the team’s games.

“I had no expectations that we’d be winning the tournament - especially me, since I had no passion for the game anymore,” Former XCD Player Sang said. Sang also added that he felt like he got lucky after garnering 45 frags despite his lack of passion for the game. He used to be competitive in the Valorant scene - peaking Radiant - and gradually lost his passion in the game after doing so. But with Mandem winning the LAN tournament, he was proud of his team - even amazed that they were able to win against teams that took months to form chemistry. He also didn’t expect he would be labeled as the Most Valuable Player at almost every game they encountered mid-tournament.
