TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— A Vigo County man has been arrested in relation to s*xually abusing a minor after the June 25 storm.

According to court documents, 37-year-old Andrew Keller has been arrested and charged with a level 1 felony of child mo**sting, a level 4 felony of child mo**sting, and providing obscene matter to a minor which is a level 6 felony.

Court documents state that a 13-year-old female at Susie’s Place Advocacy Center was interviewed about an incident that happened in the aftermath of the severe storm on June 25. The documents say prior to this that the victim had clarified her age to Keller and that he had made inappropriate comments to her as well as touched her inappropriately while children were in the other room. The probable cause affidavit states that during the attack Keller also showed s*xually suggestive images to the victim.

The documents go on to state that later on Keller had been babysitting her and other children due to him maintaining power that was out from damages incurred during the storm. Keller had lured the victim to a room by using the phone of her younger sibling to impersonate him. Once there Keller s*xually attacked the victim while her sibling was asleep in the room and threatened to hurt him if she told anyone, stating “he can’t lose his kids”.

The documents state Keller was interviewed by authorities on August 21 and denied knowing the victim. Once he admitted to knowing the victim and was informed of the nature of the case Keller called for a lawyer. Keller is currently incarcerated in the Vigo County Jail.

A recent recall of Boar’s Head deli meats linked to a nasty listeria outbreak prompted federal inspectors to visit the company’s plant in Jarratt, Virginia. The inspection yielded some pretty disgusting results.

Overall, inspectors identified 69 violations over the past year. Mildew! Cockroaches! Black mold! That’s the grossness trifecta. All they need to find is a finger in a vat of mortadella to take it over the top.

The listeria outbreak was the biggest since 2011. The CDC currently reports 57 hospitalizations and 9 deaths across 18 states linked to deli meat, most notably Boar’s Head’s since-recalled Strassburger Brand Liverwurst. The CDC says to avoid products identifiable by establishment number “EST. 12612” or “P-12612” on the product labels.

Despite the nasty conditions at the Boar’s Head facility, the US Department of Agriculture did not immediately enforce any actions against Boar’s Head. However, the company has suspended operations at the plant to clean the joint and re-train employees. Presumably, train them to care about any inky black fuzz growing near salami.

It should be noted that in 2019, the Trump administration relaxed safety standards and reduced oversight across the entire pork processing industry. Pork processing companies were suddenly allowed to start policing themselves with federal inspections being fewer and far between. Of course, they said it was all to cut costs and boost production.

Then, just a few years later, there was a massive listeria outbreak at a pork processing plant, lots of hospitalizations with some deaths, and black mold and bugs were found in the plant of one of the biggest producers of deli meat in the United States. Maybe a coincidence, maybe a direct result. Who knows. But it sure is an interesting connection.

A Spring Valley man has been charged with possession of child s*x abuse material after allegedly downloading the material to his cellphone, the Illinois Attorney General’s office said in a Saturday news release.

Brandon Swiskoski, 30, was charged with five counts of possession of the material, all Class 1 felonies, and one count of failure to register as a s*x offender, a Class 2 felony, Attorney General Kwame Raoul said.

Swiskoski was arrested on Aug. 28, after investigators received a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Raoul’s investigators, along with officers from the Illinois State Police and the Spring Valley Police Department, conducted an investigation and found downloaded child s*x abuse material on Swiskoski’s cell phone, according to the news release.

Assistant Attorney General Katherine Hegarty is prosecuting the case for Raoul’s High Tech Crimes Bureau with the Bureau County State’s Attorney’s Office.

According to the news release, the case is part of Raoul’s ongoing work, in collaboration with federal law enforcement agencies and local law enforcement officials throughout Illinois, to apprehend offenders who download and trade child s*x abuse material online.

“Survivors of child exploitation and abuse are revictimized each time these heinous images or videos are downloaded or shared,” Raoul said. “My office will continue to collaborate with state’s attorneys and law enforcement agencies to hold individuals who prey on and exploit young children accountable.”

Swiskoski is detained at the Bureau County jail. His next court date is scheduled for Oct. 23.

A social media post (archived here) on X (formerly Twitter) with more than one million views claims that California is relaxing the punishment for adults “buying” children for s*x.

The post says, “SB 1414, new law in California. The punishment for buying a child for s*x in California is now punishable by 2 DAYS in county jail. 2 DAYS in county jail. It’s no longer punishable by prison.”

However, California’s new law actually proposes increasing the punishment for soliciting a minor, not decreasing it.

Under existing California law, any person who solicits, agrees to engage in, or engages in any act of commercial s*x with a minor is charged with a misdemeanor. If the person solicited is a minor, and the offender knew or should have known they were a minor, the offense carries a mandatory jail sentence of two days to one year, a fine of up to $10,000, or both.

Senate Bill (SB) 1414 bill, now scheduled for a third reading, proposes significant changes to the penalties for soliciting a minor for prostitution.

Under the legislation, if the minor is under 16 or under 18 and a victim of human trafficking, the offense would be classified as a “wobbler.” A “wobbler” is an offense that can be prosecuted as either a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on the circumstances and the prosecutor’s discretion. This means it could be charged as either a misdemeanor, with penalties of up to one year in county jail and a fine, or as a felony punishable by imprisonment in the county jail, with sentences of 16 months, two years, or three years.

For repeat offenders, the crime would automatically be treated as a felony with the same prison terms. Starting on January 1, 2025, anyone convicted under these conditions and who is more than 10 years older than the minor must register as a s*x offender for 10 years.

A father accused of fatally shooting his ex-wife and her new partner while their 15 y/o daughter waited in the car ranted about his hatred of gender pronouns in a MAGA-fueled screed only hours earlier.

Daniel Coppola, 50, was arrested on Thursday on two murder charges, after Kelly Coppola, also 50, and her partner of almost two years, Kenneth Pohlman, 53, were found gunned down in their St. James home shortly before midnight on Wednesday.

On Friday morning, DailyMail.com obtained the first photos of Coppola after his arrest, as he was marched out of jail to appear in court wearing socks and no shoes, with a small wound visible on his forehead.

At his arraignment, Coppola was charged with two counts of second-degree murder and is being held without bail. He is under su***de watch and faces up to 50 years to life in prison. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Coppola, a father of one, lost his temper on Facebook hours before the alleged killings, complaining about the use of gender pronouns in email signatures.

‘Maybe I should say in my signature line trump/him,’ he wrote, followed by the hashtag ‘ .’

A die-hard Trumper in Florida says he was discriminated against by a right-wing political advocacy group, claiming he was called a “slave” during his 12 days with the organization before it fired him for complaining.

Carl Baxter, who is Black, is suing Americans for Prosperity, the nonprofit “grassroots” conservative operation established by Charles and David Koch, the billionaire siblings and hard-line climate change deniers.

Baxter serves as president of the Republican Club of North & East Fort Myers, and is not at all shy about his outsized affection for Donald Trump. He can be seen on social media at Trump appearances, waving a MAGA flag at a “Trump Truck Parade,” at charity galas giving the camera a Trumpian “thumbs-up,” and donning a red MAGA hat and posing with, among others, a county tax collector who has come out as a vociferous opponent of critical race theory.

AFP, which has been around since 2004, gained prominence after Barack Obama was sworn in as president. It has traditionally focused on hollowing out workers’ rights, blocking Medicaid expansion, kneecapping green energy initiatives, and pushing down the minimum wage. Since 2010, some 42 percent of AFP’s ads have been rated “false” by PolitiFact, the nonpartisan fact-checking website; none have been rated “true.” The group backed Trump’s UN ambassador Nikki Haley in the 2024 presidential race before the former South Carolina governor bowed out in March.

Trump chafed at AFP’s support of Haley, posting last January to his flailing Twitter clone, Truth Social: “American’s [sic] for No Prosperity, who made more money during the Trump years than at any other time, are stupid people who are backing Birdbrain as she goes down tubes. Bad timing Charles!”

Baxter’s lawsuit, which was filed Monday and obtained by The Independent, describes him as “an African-American businessman who is active in local politics.” It says he was brought on by AFP in June 2023 to work as a part-time “grassroots associate.” Baxter’s duties “consisted of canvassing neighborhoods to talk with voters about AFP-selected policy issues and driving to and from those neighborhoods,” according to the suit.

SAN ANTONIO — Raids on the homes of several Democrats in South Texas, in what the state attorney general said is an ongoing election integrity investigation, has set off a showdown with the nation’s oldest Latino civil rights group.

The Aug. 20 raids targeted Manuel Medina, chair of the Tejano Democrats, several members of the League of United Latin American Citizens, a state House candidate and a local area mayor.

The raids have triggered outrage and accusations of voter suppression in a state with a long history of discrimination against its citizens of Mexican descent, which gave rise to LULAC in 1929.

On Monday morning, LULAC leaders, state legislators, activists of other Latino groups and supporters and some of the people whose homes were raided protested outside the San Antonio office of Attorney General Ken Paxton, a Republican.

“This is point blank voter intimidation, and LULAC will fight for the right of every Latino to exercise the right to vote,” said Roman Palomares, LULAC’s national president.

A copy of a wide-ranging search warrant left with one of the people targeted, LULAC volunteer Lidia Martinez, 87, of San Antonio, offered a window into the investigation’s interests. The warrant ordered the seizure of all electronic devices at her home, allowed for the opening of documents that were business-, organization- or election-related, and authorized swabbing for DNA. According to the warrant, the purpose of the search was to look for evidence of violations of the Texas election laws regarding vote harvesting and identity fraud.

Medina’s home was also “forcibly entered” in the early morning of Aug. 20. According to a filing from his attorney, officers woke up Medina, his wife and two young daughters, and “rummaged through the residence” for seven hours, the attorney said, searching through the living spaces, closets, kitchen, bathrooms, garage and the family’s bedrooms. Officers seized 65 cellphones and 41 computers and storage devices, the filing said.

30/08/2024

Imane Khelif, a long-time competitor in women’s boxing, had come to Paris to represent Algeria at the Olympics for the second time. Algerians traveled hundreds of miles to support her. Algerian newspapers heralded her as a “heroine.” She beat one opponent after the next, winning gold in the women’s welterweight tournament.

But since the first time she entered the ring in Paris, Khelif’s body, mannerisms, identity and athleticism became the focus of scrutiny by politicians, billionaires and news outlets on a global scale. A narrative soon took hold: Khelif was labeled a transgender woman.

This wasn’t true — but that didn’t matter. Her actions and reactions were weaponized against her. Khelif had won her matches too easily. When her first opponent quit after 46 seconds and cried after Khelif punched her, Khelif didn’t look remorseful enough. To detractors, this boxer from Algeria, who had pursued a sport she loved since she was 6 years old, didn’t fit the stereotypical idea of what a woman is supposed to be.

The anti-transgender hatred directed at Khelif — and the narrow beliefs about femininity being projected onto her — are part of how anti-trans rhetoric fuels violence towards women of color, including cisgender women, experts and transgender athletes told The 19th.

“Really what we’re talking about is the spectacle of surveillance on women of color’s bodies, especially when they’re winning and performing in ways that exceed the expectations of White women,” said Treva B. Lindsey, a professor of women’s, gender and s*xuality studies at Ohio State University.

Gender policing, or enforcing traditional gender norms and roles through the punishment of those who don’t conform, ignores cultural variations, spectrums of self-expression, gender fluidity and nonbinary identities, said Toni Newman, director of the coalition for justice and equality across movements at the National Minority AIDS Council. And these variations are not exclusive to transgender people. Now, attacks levied against transgender women are being used to attack cisgender women, she said.

SAO PAULO (AP) — It’s a showdown between the world’s richest man and a Brazilian Supreme Court justice.

The justice, Alexandre de Moraes, has threatened to suspend social media giant X nationwide in the coming hours if its billionaire owner Elon Musk doesn’t swiftly comply with one of his orders. Musk has responded with insults, including calling de Moraes a “tyrant” and “a dictator.”

It is the latest chapter in the monthslong feud between the two men over free speech, far-right accounts and misinformation. The deadline for compliance is fast approaching, and many in Brazil are waiting and watching to see if either man will blink.

Earlier this month, X removed its legal representative from Brazil on the grounds that de Moraes had threatened her with arrest. On Wednesday night at 8:07 p.m. local time (7:07 p.m. Eastern Standard Time), de Moraes gave the platform 24 hours to appoint a new representative, or face a shutdown until his order is met.

De Moraes’ order is based on Brazilian law requiring foreign companies to have legal representation to operate in the country, according to the Supreme Court’s press office. This ensures someone can be notified of legal decisions and is qualified to take any requisite action.

X’s refusal to appoint a legal representative would be particularly problematic ahead of Brazil’s October municipal elections, with a churn of fake news expected, said Luca Belli, coordinator of the Technology and Society Center at the Getulio Vargas Foundation, a university in Rio de Janeiro. Takedown orders are common during campaigns, and not having someone to receive legal notices would make timely compliance impossible.

“Until last week, 10 days ago, there was an office here, so this problem didn’t exist. Now there’s nothing. Look at the example of Telegram: Telegram doesn’t have an office here, it has about 50 employees in the whole world. But it has a legal representative,” Belli, who is also a professor at the university’s law school, told The Associated Press.

A Bergen County councilwoman has resigned from her elected position after she was arrested in Connecticut Thursday under suspicion of embezzling tens of thousands of dollars from a nonprofit she helped lead that aimed to helping families who’ve lost children.

Abby Lundy, 60, of Hillsdale, surrendered to police in New Cannan, Connecticut after being charged with first-degree larceny and second and third-degree forgery.

Hillsdale mayor Michael Sheinfield said Tuesday that Lundy resigned Friday. The investigation into accusations of financial misconduct began in July.

Authorities accused Lundy of a long-running embezzlement scheme that fraudulently steered $85,873.32 away from the New Cannan-based nonprofit First Candle to herself, according to a report from the Stamford Advocate citing the arrest warrant for Lundy.

First Candle is a nonprofit that aims to eliminate Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, also known as SIDS, and unexpected deaths of infants due to suffocation.

According to the Stamford Advocate, Lundy was the CFO of the organization and an investigation by police began after the nonprofit’s CEO discovered the organization had lost its nonprofit status with the IRS in 2023 for allegedly failing to withhold payroll taxes since 2020.

The Stamford Advocate reported that police wrote in the warrant for Lundy’s arrest that the IRS assumed the nonprofit had closed. Police said in the arrest warrant that Allison Jacobson, the nonprofit’s CEO asked Lundy to meet with the IRS to correct the nonprofit’s status prior to going to police, according to reports.

29/08/2024

Some of Donald Trump’s biggest and newest supporters from finance and Silicon Valley, including Elon Musk and Bill Ackman, have spent the past several weeks trying to whitewash comments the former president and current Republican presidential nominee made in relation to the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville in 2017.

In the past week, the Kamala Harris presidential campaign and President Joe Biden both highlighted Trump’s August 15, 2017 comment, when the former president said there were “very fine people on both sides” of the clashes that followed the neo-Nazi rally in Charlottesville.

For years, Trump supporters have defended his comments, claiming he was speaking about a nonexistent group of nonracist rallygoers who were there just to protest the removal of a statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee.

While Trump did condemn the white supremacists and neo-Nazis who took part in the rally, those who covered the event have repeatedly pointed out that only extremists were involved in the march, including members of the so-called alt-right, white nationalists, neo-Nazis, Klansmen, and far-right militias. Trump’s “fine people” comments were at best misleading and at worst tacit support for extremists, despite his subsequent disavowal. Trump has consistently been slammed by critics for his comments, but false claims from Trump supporters have persisted.

But over the past few weeks, Trump’s supporters in Silicon Valley and Wall Street—some of whom began officially supporting the former president following his assassination attempt last month—have also tried to rewrite history.

David Marcus, the crypto entrepreneur and CEO of Lightspark who has been a Democratic Party supporter for years, posted last month that he was now backing Trump.

In an X post last week that has been viewed 33 million times, Marcus claimed that Trump’s “very fine people” comment had been purposely taken out of context by the media. “Realizing that this was and continues to be a lie was a turning point for me,” Marcus wrote on X.

BENTON COUNTY, Tenn. — A couple in Benton County is being charged with alleged child s*x crimes involving a relative.

Vince Roy Dykstra from Camden, who is 65, and his girlfriend Patty Ann Utley, a 57-year-old from McKenzie are facing alleged charges of s*xual battery and trafficking for a commercial s*x act involving a minor.

According to Benton County Sheriff’s Office, on August 20, a juvenile reported the couple to police for alleged inappropriate s*xual behavior that had been happening between the juvenile and Dykstra that was set up by Utley.

The child had been staying with Utley, who is a relative. Dykstra is Utley’s boyfriend.

Utley is facing felony charges of alleged trafficking for a commercial s*x act involving a minor. Dykstra is facing felony charges of alleged s*xual battery of a minor.

Benton County Sheriff Ken Christopher said after the couple was reported by the juvenile, officers obtained warrants for their arrests.

Both were arrested and booked into the Benton County Jail on a $100,000 dollars bond.

Utley and Dykstra appeared in court before Judge Endland the next day, on August 21. Bonds were reduced to $75,000. Both Utley and Dykstra were bonded out on August 21.

The juvenile is no longer staying with Utley and an order was issued for no contact between either parties and the victim.

28/08/2024

WASHINGTON (AP) — A group of lawyers with deep ties to the Republican Party scrambled over the weekend to rescue an effort to get independent presidential candidate Cornel West on the Arizona ballot, offering one of the clearest examples yet of the GOP’s extensive involvement in furthering the left-wing academic’s long-shot bid.

As a deadline loomed to submit the needed paperwork, two well-known Republican lawyers in the state and a GOP attorney working to get West on the ballot elsewhere learned that two of their would-be electors — Jerry Judie and Denisha Mitchell — were not interested in fulfilling the role. The electors’ decisions led to a barrage of text messages and phone calls looking to keep the operation alive. When those efforts failed, a Republican lawyer and the former GOP state lawmaker both visited Judie’s and Mitchell’s homes, seemingly seeking to persuade them to reconsider.

The Arizona Secretary of State’s office said Monday that West did not file the paperwork needed to get on the ballot before Saturday’s deadline.

In a brief interview, West expressed ambivalence about Republican efforts to help him, which Democrats fear could benefit Donald Trump by siphoning away left-leaning voters who would probably support the Democratic nominee otherwise.

“So much of American politics is highly gangster-like activity,” West told The Associated Press on Monday. “I have no knowledge of who they are or anything — none whatsoever. We just want to get on that ballot. And that’s the difficult thing.”

The work by the GOP attorneys appears to be part of a broader effort by conservative activists and Republican-aligned operatives across the country to push West’s candidacy and subvert the integrity of the ballot in the months leading up to November’s presidential election.
