Asthma ranks as the leading health condition affecting Australian school-aged kids, more than any other condition. It is these same kids that lead the nation’s asthma hospitalisation rates.

Studies have shown that exposure to air pollutants, such as fine particulate matter (PM2.5), can impair cognitive abilities, attention span and memory retention. It can cause behavioural issues, including irritability, fatigue and difficulty concentrating.

"At the moment, university funding is primarily based on a student’s field of study. There are some extra funds for equity students, about A$360 million a year, but this is not a key feature of the system’s design.

In our paper we explored what would happen if a model similar the Schooling Resource Standard was introduced in Australian universities."

Being outdoors is beneficial, whether learning as part of an outdoor education program, participating in an outdoor adventure, seeking improvement through nature therapy, or simply being immersed in nature. Getting active outdoors enhances student and staff wellbeing, while deepening connections to community, environment and cultural values.

Outdoor activities develop social connections and allow people to work on group relationships. By focusing on a joint goal, such as bushwalking to a destination, individuals can realise how dependent they are on others and the environment.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students must be able to see themselves and their cultures, values and worldviews in educational institutions and practices to be able to thrive on their education journey.

Despite this, the voices of First Nations students and families are largely excluded from education policies. At Aurora, we are working to place First Nations people at the centre of education reform through the Redefining Indigenous Success in Education (RISE) project.

RISE is a five-year Aurora education initiative, designed in partnership with the ANU Centre for Social Research Methods and funded by the Paul Ramsay Foundation, which aims to build on the knowledge of what works in education from a distinctly
First Nations perspective.

To do this, RISE will support approximately 800 First Nations students and their families from the beginning to the end of high school and learn from their diverse experiences along the way.

“Hats off” to Aussie teachers on World Teachers’ Day
🎩🧢👒🎓

On World Teachers’ Day today, the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) invites everyone to take a “hats off” selfie and share their message of appreciation for teachers on social media using the hashtag and tagging .

AITSL CEO Mark Grant said that "teaching is a challenging profession, and our teachers and school leaders continue to work tirelessly both inside and outside the classroom".

"Today is about us sharing our messages about the positive impact teachers have made in our lives," Mr Grant said.

Campaign ambassador and CEO of Real Schools, Adam Voight, agrees.

“It’s a day where teachers and school leaders should also reflect and look at everything they have achieved as an educator and the hurdles they have overcome and the positive impact they have had in their school community,” Mr Voight said.

Teacher campaign ambassador Kate Ingliss said, " as teachers, we have many responsibilities, we are not just teaching our students the curriculum, but life skills too. We are their mentor, confidant and advocate."

Join the campaign now by going to www.worldteachersday.edu.au.

Our modern office offers an array of benefits for the whole team. It is a thoughtfully designed, comfortable space that is a welcoming environment for all employees.

Traditional offices often sport a dated industrial theme with no character to demonstrate a neutral work environment.

Modern spaces offer a new approach and ensure people feel comfortable and welcomed.

Therefore, doing our best work!

The next generation of creatives

Do you teach students who love the performing arts, but don’t know where to start to build a career?

Perhaps they are interested in onstage performance roles as an actor, musician, vocalist, dancer or circus performer – in front of the curtain careers. Perhaps they are interested in management-type roles and are not sure of their best fit, but know they want to work in performing arts.

So, what could they do?

There is an ever-expanding market for employment in the creative sector that requires a variety of skills, expertise and education.

The opportunities to engage in the performing arts and transform young people’s curiosity into a career are broader than you may realise.

In the performing arts sector, it’s smart to have diversity in skill base by learning and developing other skill sets. For example, a musician who also builds expertise in business management carries the understanding of a musician in an orchestral company, with the qualifications to also be the company’s Chief Executive Officer or Artistic Director.

Positive education through representative school sport.

Interstate school representative sport has been ongoing for over 100 years.

In 2023, the Australian Football Championships is celebrating its 100 years of interstate competition in Ballarat, Victoria, and Albury, New South Wales (NSW).

Since 1981, an organisation now known as School Sport Australia (SSA) has been responsible for the development and promotion of national representative school sport nationwide.

This has been achieved through the work of its state and territory education bodies, which have accepted the responsibility of implementing SSA representative programs, assisting in policy development, and providing, through their individual state networks, the maximum number of opportunities for students to participate in the broadest range of sporting events.

Water is life, water is food. Leave no one behind.

It’s time to start managing water wisely!
Governments, the private sector, farmers, academia, civil society and individuals need to work together to address global water challenges. We need to produce more food and other essential agricultural commodities with less water while ensuring water is distributed equally, our aquatic food systems are preserved, and nobody is left behind.

Together, we can be the change.

Negotiations around the next school reform agreement alongside the NDIS Review provide a real opportunity to better educate and support students with disabilities.

The current reform agreement ends in December 2024, and the new one is starting to be developed. One of the early priorities is to improve outcomes for all students, “particularly those most at risk of falling behind”. An expert panel will deliver a report to all education ministers by the end of October to inform negotiations.

Meanwhile, a wide-ranging NDIS Review, looking at the sustainability of the scheme, is also due to be report around the same time.

Australia needs a ‘knowledge economy’ fuelled by scientists and arts graduates, here’s why:

The federal government has been asking for “bold ideas” to “reimagine” the future of Australian higher education for decades to come.

An interim report for the Universities Accord was released in July. Feedback on this draft is due today.
While there have been many ideas floated by commentators and the review panel (such as a new national university for regional students and a levy on international student fees), there has been less discussion about what our university education system is for.

We think there is an urgent need to talk about how higher education can fuel a “knowledge economy” – an economy based on technical and scientific advances. This is crucial if we are going to move past our economic reliance on carbon.

Online safety is a concern for many parents across the globe.
eSafety in Australian schools.

It has been a topic that is regularly raised due to the continued merging of the digital and real worlds. This is a trend that will continue, with children in kindergarten starting to learn about tablets, games and online activities.

It is the responsibility of the technology industry to ensure that these children and their families are well-prepared. The Australian Information Security Association (AISA) as the peak body for cyber security in Australia needs to play a part in helping shape how this problem is approached in the education sector.

Digital exclusion amongst school students

Although the online world was created by adults for adults, the reality is one in three internet users is a child or young person. Digital products, services and experiences have become part of everyday life, with continuous high-quality access to data, devices and storage simply assumed.

Over the past few years, most schools have moved to app-based communication strategies to engage students (and parents/carers) in class timetabling, curriculum, homework and school events, such as sports days, fundraising, plays and tuckshop.

When this access is inconsistent, interrupted or non-existent, children are said to be digitally excluded. The lack of digital inclusion, which is the reality for some Australian children and young people, constitutes a significant barrier to their education, career options, safety and citizenship.

Empowering young people with Positive Education and wellbeing science!

With an ongoing mental health crisis among young people across the globe, there has never been a more pressing need for our communities – and schools as significant and influential components of those communities – to take action to improve the mental health of all community members.

This is essential not only to alleviate mental ill-being, but also to teach individuals the skills they need to live flourishing lives.

Educators and researchers globally prioritise the importance of nurturing students’ wellbeing in the education system. This necessary shift has given rise to Positive Education, a transformative approach that combines academic learning with the cultivation of character strengths and social and emotional wellbeing.

Setting new standards in education!

‘Role clarity is one of the biggest concerns when it comes to TAs, which is why the Standards are going to be really helpful. The TA can be a wasted asset if the teacher isn’t clear on what their role is, and if the teacher doesn’t know how to effectively partner with the TA in the classroom.’ – Dr Claire Jackson, Inclusive Education Specialist, Faculty of Education, Monash University.

The Australian Standards for Paraprofessional Educators align with the Professional Standards for Teachers and will provide schools with a framework to effectively deploy paraprofessionals, and ensure they are fully prepared for their role, better enabling educators to help students succeed.

“Every child has the right not only to survive, but to live to their fullest potential, developing healthily in conditions that do not adversely affect their physical and mental wellbeing”.
