Fly your drone clooooooooose to things!
Get more dramatic shots by flying CLOSER to things. Not yet confident? Try flying DIRECTLY UP while STANDING UNDER your drone.
Gimbal is pointed forward (not at you) and you are able to LOOK at the drone (to make sure you’re not going to hit something) and LOOK at the controller (to make sure the shot looks right).
Obstacle avoidance is off (otherwise in this shot, the drone would potentially jump into the tree)
I am flying SLOW!

GIVE DRONE EXTRA TIME TO FIND GPS + CALIBRATE IT!
I just landed in Mexico. Chillllllllll. Give your drone time to “acclimate” (i.e. a few more seconds).
What happens if you DO NOT?
Your drone can “drift” - i.e. have a difficult time picking up on GPS and if you’re flying in ANY kind of tight space, or launch your drone near something, it’s not uncommon for it to well.. drift into that thing.
It takes just a minute, calibrate it!
💥 How to:
-Three dots
-Safety
-Calibrate drone
PEOPLE ALWAYS MESSSGE ME “PSHHHHHT I DONT HAVE TO CALIBRATE. I NEVER DO THAT”
My response?
Great! Do you, boo. But when you DO have a flight in which you realized “ohhhhhh sh** I needed to calibrate my drone” then sorry not sorry
Someone just messaged me about how their drone drifted into a waterfall. Ouch.

CENTER your subject, then simply fly the drone 🆙
With the gimbal looking down, use the left stick and fly your drone directly up.
No rocket science here.
*Helpful tip: I like to TURN ON all grid lines so I can help to make sure the subjects are lined up.
How? Go to settings > camera > gridlines (I turn ALL of them on)

This capture is one of my favorite destinations in the world: Bonaire. This trip with the team of One Blue Ocean

“What drone do you fly?” Me: I *AM* A DRONE!
LOL. Just kidding. Maybe.
Not kidding: I don’t fly a drone… I fly drones (plural).
I currently fly:
▪️Mavic Air2S (I love this drone)
▪️DJI Mini 3 Pro (Everyone thinks “smaller is better”, but 60% of the time I hate this drone because it sucks in wind and range)
▪️DJI FPV (This drone is the reason Dramamine’s stock has gone up)
I used to fly:
▪️Mavic Mini 1 (it was pretty angry with me after how hard I pushed it in Africa and it died a few years later)
▪️Mavic Air2 (I did a contest, flew out the winner on an all expenses paid trip, taught them EVERYTHING I know about drones, then gave them the drone - now @miaonthemap owns this drone)
When I fly for projects, I have access to other drones:
▪️Mavic 3
▪️Mavic 3 Pro
▪️Mavic 3 Pro Cine
▪️Mavic 2 Pro
Blah blah blah
😂 But tbh, I’m a drone. The truth is out.

Treat them like nipples and pinch them softly. Seriously.
“You should put your thumbs on top of the drone controls” NOOOOOOOO!
It’s the equivalent of writing with a pen held in your clenched fist… LIKE A CAVEMAN or A KINDERGARTENER
Which caveman kindergarteners are very cute. FYI.
Pinching the sticks….
This will give you MAX CONTROL when taking cinematic videos or flying CLOSE or through things.
If you’re just setting up for a photograph, meh, not that big of a deal.
It SHOULD feel awkward, but if you force yourself to do it… it becomes second nature in a week or so. And it pays off in the footage!

They didn't ask me to create content, but I wanted to.
When I learned about the powerful work that IMIND Mental Health is doing for the community, OF COURSE I wanted to create a content piece for them. I was chatting with one of the employees and was really touched by his story.
I asked if I could mic him and - he hesitated. It was one of the first time he's ever been on camera and nothing about it feels natural (I get it)...
What do I do in these moments?
I love to hold the camera lens right next to my face - so the interviewee doesn't have to look at it. They can look at me. And I ask them to tell their story - just as they told it to me a minute ago.. but say it for the person that might be having that SAME struggle that you went through.
Tell them honestly, what you went through, let them hear it - not just that great ending, but the hard parts that you had to go through to get there. The part where you had to get sober. The part where you couldn't find help. The part where you had to make the change.
Talk to them from the heart...
And this entire time, I've already had the camera going so at the end of my instruction, I nod, and as though the camera isn't there - he just started talking to me...
Thank you Kevin, for sharing your story 💜
“DJI DRONES ARE NOT WATERPROOF” buuuuut…
Well, sorta. You can dunk that thing in milk along with your cookies…
People say drones can’t get wet, but tbh, they (kinda) can
Yes “waterproof drones” exist (but these are not your typical DJI drones)
But a normal DJI drone can handle a decent amount of water and rain. How much? It’s up to you on how much you want to push it, but I regularly fly my drone in the rain (I mean come onnnn, if there is a rainbow I ain’t saying no to that).
🌧TIPS for flying your drone in the rain
1. Shoot top down
To avoid getting rain on your drone lens (and therefore a completely ruined shot), consider doing a top down drone photo or video. By pointing the camera AWAY from the rain, you won’t have water spots on your lens.
Point your gimbal down to 90 degrees before you even take off and FLY it this way as you’re going OUT to your shot.
2. Fly backwards
Same as above.. this helps to prevent water from getting on your camera
3. Use apps
